Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 24, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult  0.38
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.76
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.93
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

Beauty & The Beast ratings ticked up a tenth last week. Better than the alternative, but not enough to have the Cancellation Bear change his prediction.

As noted last week, the biggest thing the show has going for a second season is simply the fact that were Beauty & The Beast canceled, along with Cult and The Carrie Diaries as currently predicted, the CW would only have 5 hours of "veteran" scripted shows for next Fall, and they've never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast's friend.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Gus: “Four smiling faces for a show (Nikita) that is getting lower ratings that The Carrie Diaries and Beauty and The beast? Oh yeah the head of the network likes Nikita thus it stays.”

That has utterly nothing to do with it. Nikita is slated for syndication and that’s the only reason it was renewed for season three (and will be renewed for season four.)

“Sad thing is whatever thing the CW does try that is new once it gets a bad rating in its’ first outing (See Cult for details) it is ready for cancellation.”

Any show doing as badly in its first outing as Cult deserves cancellation. The real pity for the CW is that they didn’t identify it as a crap show as soon as they saw the pilot.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Bizarro: “ABC is doing it with Body of Proof”

Wrong. Body of Proof had an upward trend at the end of its last season and allegedly there was a California tax credit which assisted in making it profitable. Plus the show always airs low episodes because it’s a spring show.

    “Fox did it with Dollhouse”

This one is questionable, too. Although the ratings at end of season one indicated cancellation, Fox has history with Joss Whedon and Whedon promised to repair the show (which he did to some degree) and cut the budget.

    “and Fringe in the end.”

Fringe’s last season was due to WB wanting more episodes for a full 100-episode syndication. Which means the studio gave Fox the show for next to nothing, making it profitable for Fox to do that.

None of those were “pity renewals”.

On BATB: I’ve watched every episode. It has not improved a whit. And the premise, as I’ve said, makes no sense because it violates the original myth as well as the original TV show.

I notice none of the “beasties” want to contest my claim on that – they just argue over whether having the scar is irrelevant. It goes way beyond that as I’ve pointed out before. The basic concept of the myth is that the two leads CANNOT be together – it’s a doomed romance. That is not the case in the present version. The ONLY thing keeping them apart is the Muirfield bunch and all they have to do to cancel that out is COME IN OUT OF THE COLD (as spies say.) They have no reason not to. Which makes the show stupid.

Not to mention the show has many other problems in acting (not necessarily Kristin although she’s not that impressive either – she’s adequate, although her character really isn’t), writing, directing, pace, etc.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Shaz: “then why aren’t you equally outraged that nobody on The Vampire Diaries seems to be writing in their diaries much anymore?”

Seriously? You’re going with that argument? :-)

Not to mention the notion that beast makeup is “expensive” – compared to the hundreds of thousands it costs to shoot on location a lot. You want to see expensive makeup, try the SyFy’s new show Defiance with a ton of different alien races. Half the cast is in makeup one hundred percent of the time.

This is why no one here takes BATB fans seriously. You scrabble for reasons to watch or renew the show that make no sense whatsoever.

  • Immaculate

“The basic concept of the myth is that the two leads CANNOT be together – it’s a doomed romance. That is not the case in the present version.”

LOL. You’re dumb. You need to read up on the original myth.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Immaculate: “LOL. You’re dumb. You need to read up on the original myth.”

No, you’re dumb. The original myth was that while he was under a curse, he COULD NOT connect. That’s the exact same premise of the original TV show. Also, that was magic – the original show and THIS show aren’t based on magic. They’re based on the concept of a doomed romance. THAT’S a “re-imagining.” For the original show, that was true. For this show, it isn’t. Which makes this show stupid.

    And you.

  • Rachel

    @Immaculate

If two facial expressions and over-enunciation of every word is good acting then fine.

  • Rachel

    @Richard Steven Hack
Any show doing as badly in its first outing as Cult deserves cancellation. The real pity for the CW is that they didn’t identify it as a crap show as soon as they saw the pilot.

Because the president at the CW is so far up his own ass. He revived Cult(a pilot the WB turned down 6 years ago) because HE wanted to see it. He will continue to pick up pilots he likes instead of the shows the network needs. I called him out for being a total idiot last season and got blasted on this site for it. Given the state of the CW right now, clearly I was right.

  • Immaculate

    @rachel

Keep telling yourself that and maybe one day you’ll be believe it.

    @RSH

And no you’re dumb because he did in fact connect and that’s why the curse was broke.

    Go away you losers.

  • Bizarro

    @Richard Steven Hack
If you would of actually read my comment I said “MOST of you guys commenting don’t watch the show EXCEPT a handful” and the pres of Fox said one of the reasons they renewed Dollhouse because not only did they love Whedon but they did not want to receive a bunch of angry emails from bitter fans. Yea that’s not the final reason but still. Also I remember that Body of Proof was “certain cancellation” and “likely to be cancelled” last season and got renewed but two episodes out of 20 changed ABC’s mind? Oh yea money is a factor. So like the CW did with Nikita and what you said about Dollhouse, if somehow Beauty remains on the bubble instead of “likely cancellation” why can’t they give Beauty a paycut? Why can’t CBS offer them a cheap deal to keep the show? Why can’t they retool the show? I think The CW needs to go above and beyond and pick up all 8 pilots next season and if a freshman show fails then they have a midseason replacement ready to take its place. Just like the big 4. Instead of having two midseason replacements they should have four replacements and 10 hours of programming. So if a show bombs like TCD or Cult the CW would still have two more shows to premiere. But the CW can’t afford that so that won’t happen and that is why the CW is a low level network because the big 4 does not cancel a bubble show or only has two midseason replacements and say “We can’t afford it thats why”. The big 4 would laugh right in their face. “The basic concept of the myth is that the two leads CANNOT be together – it’s a doomed romance.” In B&TB their relationship is tested in every episode. Ever since they got together, Vincent and Kat are always second guessing their relationship and one of them in every episode wants to call it quits because of the obstacles they face. I’m not saying this show is perfect but its not bad. I can tell that by going to TV.com and reading reviews from when the show first premiered to now. The show has improved a ton with its audience. But I understand why you think the show is a piece of crap. The problem is us “beasties” or whatever don’t go calling out TCD, Cult, HOD, or Nikita about its quality or at least I don’t. So why do you feel the need to talk about B&TB’s quality? Why do you even take the time to type hate about a show. I don’t take the time to hate on TCD or Nikita’s quality. A matter of fact, I don’t think Nikita’s a bad show it may have bad ratings sometimes but still. This is like if I went on youtube and posted a bunch of negative comments about a certain actor or artist that I didn’t like. Why even waste my time. Most of the hate is from its ratings, I bet if this show was getting .8’s and higher their would be barely any talk of why the show wasn’t named “Beauty and the Male Model” in the first place.

What does everyone think of my schedule?

    MONDAY
    8:00 Beauty and the Beast
    9:00 (NEW) The Hundred

    TUESDAY
    8:00 Heart of Dixie
    9:00 (NEW) The Tomorow People

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 Arrow
    9:00 Supernatural

    THURSDAY
    8:00 The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 (NEW) The Originals

    FRIDAY
    8:00 America’s Next Top Model
    9:00 Nitka

  • Norma

Your schedule is screwed up. Beast and Dixie are not lead in material at all so that will never happen and Nikita is gonna be on 8pm. They already tried ANTM as lead in for Nikita turned out to be the worst mistake the CW could ever do.

  • Jon

I predict Cult, beauty and the beast, and the carrie diaries will be bear food. Nikita should be, but there obviously is someone at the network that has a soft spot for it.

  • Jon

@Norma….I would disagree with you about HOD…..it has had very consistent ratings on what is the toughest night on tv. I say keep it right where it is. I don’t see a new show coming in at that time slot and doing any better.

  • Jon

@ Bizarro….some people just like to hate becaue it’s in their nature. Others hate to see their favorite shows not doing well, so they lash out at another program to try and ease the pain. Each year I find myself attached to at least one show that I know as hard as I hope it comes back it’s not going to. This year it is Vegas for me, last year it was prime suspect, and the year before that it was Detroti 187.

  • Ginger

    MONDAY
    8:00 The Selection (NEW)
    9:00 The Tomorrow People (NEW)
It seems like it would be hard to launch an entire night of new programming, but the bar is pretty low.

    TUESDAY
    8:00 Heart of Dixie
9:00 America’s Next Top Model (Aug-Oct) / The Carrie Diaries (NEW TIME) (Oct)
Dixie is one of the CW’s better option, so try building around it and make Tuesdays pretty girls night. Carrie Diaries can used the late start date to retool and live up to the SATC cult following roots. If Carrie fails, Top Model or another reality show can come back before summer.

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 Arrow
    9:00 Supernatural
One night should be left untouched for stability and the CW’s bullet proof pretty boys fighting crime and monsters should be the one.

    THURSDAY
    8:00 The Vampire Diaries
    9:00 The Originals (NEW)
Surely, this is the show that the Vampire Diaries audience will embrace.

    FRIDAY
    8:00 Nikita
9:00 Beauty & the Beast (NEW TIME)
It’s Friday night and shows filmed in Canada on the cheap with pretty female leads sound like a good pairing on paper.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Immaculate: “And no you’re dumb because he did in fact connect and that’s why the curse was broke.”

Once again, this show is not about MAGIC.

I’m watching the stupid thing right now, and the best line in the current episode was from J.T.: “We finally convinced them he was dead and you two had to screw it up” – which is precisely the reason the show sucks: EVERYONE on the show (except the bad guys) acts like an idiot. As do the fans.

And yes, given a choice between this guy and Stephen Amell on Arrow, I’ll take Amell for acting. He can at least change expression without having expensive makeup put on him.

  • Dee

Here’s my quandry with the CW: The imperative for any business is to grow or die. Yet, this netlet continuously develops programs that are roundly ignored by the vast majority of viewers (even in their target demo). This year’s crop of new titles, I would argue, is no different. Exactly who is going to watch these shows who isn’t already a CW viewer? How do any of them move the needle and improve the network’s future prospects?

CBS and Warner’s both own an array of properties that have higher profiles than anything they are currently considering. Properties that have long since demonstrated the ability to attract attention and generate profits for them from a variety of sources. So, why aren’t they taking advantage?

If I were calling the shots, and I needed to make a splash, these would be my new fall shows:

STAR FLEET ACADEMY – From producer J.J. Abrams. Set in the era of the first “Star Trek” movie series, Tom Welling stars as a training officer to a collection green midshipmen with a lot of growing to do.

DUKES OF HAZZARD: THE YOUNG ‘UNS – The next generation of the Duke clan.

CHECKMATE! – In this “Arrow” spinoff, an escape artist (Jonathan Taylor Thomas), a cyborg (WWE’s David Otunga), and a water-breathing girl (Estella Warren) team up to battle the evil forces of S.P.I.D.E.R.

GHOST – Alexis Bledel (“Gilmore Girls”) stars in a series version of the classic date movie.

GETTING ANIMATED WITH TAYLOR SWIFT – From Warner Animation, a charming cartoon built around the popular, young singer and her music.

PEBBLES LOVES BAMM-BAMM – Molly Quinn (“Castle”) stars as newlywed Pebbles Flintstone-Rubble in this live-action sitcom.

    The schedule:

    M: STARFLEET ACADEMY / Supernatura
T: DUKES OF HAZZARD: THE YOUNG ‘UNS / Hart of Dixie
    W: Arrow / CHECKMATE!
Th: The Vampire Diaries / GHOST
F: GETTING ANIMATED WITH TAYLOR SWIFT/PEBBLES LOVES BAMM-BAMM/Beauty and the Beast

  • Alan

@Dee Your schedule is horrible. there’s no way The CW would air so many new shows.

  • Alan

@anon The only pity renewal has been Life Unexpected, they gave it a fair second chance but it failed. GG and OTH were renewed for final seasons just to give closure, because they were veterans and because of syndication things (like, who wants to buy a long-time running show that doesn’t have an ending?)

  • Rachel

    @Immaculate

    Take your own advice.
