Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 24, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult  0.38
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.76
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.93
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

Beauty & The Beast ratings ticked up a tenth last week. Better than the alternative, but not enough to have the cancellation bear change his prediction.

As noted last week, the biggest thing the show has going for a second season is simply the fact that were Beauty & The Beast canceled, along with Cult and The Carrie Diaries as currently predicted, the CW would only have 5 hours of "veteran" scripted shows for next Fall, and they've never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast's friend.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Bizarro: “the pres of Fox said one of the reasons they renewed Dollhouse because not only did they love Whedon but they did not want to receive a bunch of angry emails from bitter fans. Yea that’s not the final reason but still.”

Which is exactly what I said – the network has a history with Whedon – it’s called Firefly – which did end up selling a lot of DVDs. It’s still not a “pity renewal”.

“Also I remember that Body of Proof was “certain cancellation” and “likely to be cancelled” last season and got renewed but two episodes out of 20 changed ABC’s mind?”

So it would seem. It was more like three episodes and it jumped from 1.4 to 2.0. Supposedly a tax credit also helped. Personally I think it was a mistake.

“So like the CW did with Nikita and what you said about Dollhouse, if somehow Beauty remains on the bubble instead of “likely cancellation” why can’t they give Beauty a paycut?”

And as I’ve said repeatedly, a show MUST PAY ITS WAY in season one and two to get a low license fee in season three and four. BATB is in SEASON ONE. They CANNOT give it a “pay cut”. They could do that for Nikita because it was being renewed for season three, not one.

Sure, they could cut the production budget somewhat if they can. Maybe they will try. It still needs to be profitable for the studio AND the network in order to get season two. There’s no proof it can be given its low ratings.

A .6 is really low – if they were doing 1.0 like Arrow, we wouldn’t be having this discussion. And without actual figures, it’s totally speculative as to what could be done to make the show pay off.

In fact, given the alleged international sales figure of $1.5 million per episode, perhaps it would be easy to cut the budget. But again, if the international RATINGS are as bad those in the US, the international buyers may not pay that level of fee for season two.

“Why can’t they retool the show?”

How would they do that? They could cut some of the actors, but it’s not that huge a cast to start with. They could in my opinion due away with Evan, and they NEED to get rid of the sister who’s an atrocious character and actor. That’s about it. As long as Cat is a working cop, they can’t get rid of the partner, her boss, Vincent, and probably not J.T. That’s most of the cast right there. If they abandoned the whole Cat is a cop bit (have her resign and go on the run with Vincent), that would be an improvement and maybe a cost cutter. But now we’re talking about revamping the entire show – and it still doesn’t solve the problem of the premise which makes no sense.

“I think The CW needs to go above and beyond and pick up all 8 pilots next season and if a freshman show fails then they have a midseason replacement ready to take its place. Just like the big 4.”

I would agree with that except apparently they can’t afford to. I DO think they can cancel EO, Cult, TCD and BATB and replace them with four pilots as well as The Originals. And they should. If they had one more pilot – a total of six – they could replace one of the failing shows mid-season. Given their history of failed mid-season shows, they wouldn’t be any worse off than they are now – and if one of the four new pilots (other than The Originals which will almost certainly do adequately if it isn’t total garbage) succeeds, they’re one more show ahead.

“big 4 does not cancel a bubble show or only has two midseason replacements and say “We can’t afford it thats why”.”

There’s no comparing the CW to the Big 4. That’s pointless.

“In B&TB their relationship is tested in every episode.”

You still don’t get it. In the myth as long as the beast is the beast he CANNOT be together with anyone (except his true love.) Again, the point is the story is about a curse – magic. The original show was about a DOOMED romance because there was no way he could be accepted in the world. This version DOES NOT HAVE EITHER component. There is NO REASON Vincent couldn’t come out and be given medical help. He’s real – not magic, not cursed. The ONLY obstacle that’s real is Muirfield – and coming out would destroy them. The show violates COMMON SENSE.

Tonight’s episode is entirely about the fallout once Tess finds out about Vincent. It illustrates my point perfectly. They handle it so badly it’s like they’re complete idiots. If Cat and Vincent had a brain, they would have come out together as soon as Cat got the picture. There IS NO REASON why they can’t be together based on his condition. That’s the whole point of my criticism of the premise.

The rest of my criticism has to do with the bad acting, writing, directing, pace of the show, and generally random behavior the writers throw in. The show reminds of the first half season of Ringer – the quality is that bad.

“The problem is us “beasties” or whatever don’t go calling out TCD, Cult, HOD, or Nikita about its quality or at least I don’t.”

Plenty of people do, so that’s irrelevant. The problem is fans of other shows think their show deserves special treatment because of its quality. Ninety percent of the beastie posts here talk about how good it is so it should be renewed.

I talk about how good Nikita is but I knew last season it was not likely to be renewed based on RATINGS. When it was, I understood how important syndication is. BATB does NOT have that option based on its RATINGS.

“So why do you feel the need to talk about B&TB’s quality?”

When I talk about quality, it’s to talk about quality. I say I don’t like a show. If I don’t like a show, I think it should be canceled – at least if it’s total garbage like Revolution or Ringer. But when I talk ratings, I’m not talking about quality – although quality DOES impact ratings, obviously. If a show is crap, people don’t watch. It’s that simple. I separate the two issues.

“Why do you even take the time to type hate about a”show.”

Because I do hate the show. Actually, “hate” is a too strong word. The show is not compelling, the show is irritating. But my opinion in that regard does nothing to change the ratings. I hate Revolution and it’s likely to be renewed regardless.

“I don’t take the time to hate on TCD or Nikita’s quality.”

I’m not talking about you. See, this is one of the problems with you fans. You take RATINGS CRITICISM PERSONALLY. Then if someone trashes the show’s quality, you take THAT personally as well. I don’t like it when people trash Nikita – and plenty do, here. But that’s irrelevant to the ratings – both last season when I thought it would be canceled and this season when it’s clear it won’t be.

You have to separate the two issues out.

“I bet if this show was getting .8?s and higher their would be barely any talk of why the show wasn’t named “Beauty and the Male Model” in the first place.”

You’d probably lose that bet. There’s always someone who’ll hate the show no matter how good it was or what ratings it got. Of course, it’s easy to pick on a low-rated show, as well. It’s safe. By definition, most people don’t watch it and thus won’t care.

But anything on the CW network gets insulted because it’s all low-rated. The whole network is considered a joke by just about everyone and pretty much rightfully so. I happen to be one who can distinguish between that and the shows that are good, namely TVD, Supernatural, Nikita and Arrow (to some degree.) I don’t watch the “old CW” type shows, 90210, HoD and TCD, or the medical show. I watch Cult, but it’s pretty bad if not horrible.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Rachel: “He revived Cult(a pilot the WB turned down 6 years ago) because HE wanted to see it.”

You may be right about that. But I suspect that’s done a lot at networks. In fact, I suspect it may be better than relying on “focus groups” and “test screenings” which tend to produce bland crap. Every network seems to produce a lot of dogs.

“He will continue to pick up pilots he likes instead of the shows the network needs.”

The prerogatives of management. If a company has a problem, it’s inevitably the result of bad management.

Personally I think the CW should go “all genre, all the time.” Replace SyFy which produces nothing but crap (aside from Alphas – and that didn’t get watched.) Forget about being a “real network” – they’ve already collapsed so far they’ll never get to that point. More likely the other four networks will eventually join them at the bottom. Might as well pick a niche now and settle in. Use the network to produce syndication properties and streaming properties like they allege they want to. At least try to produce “crap that sells” rather than “crap that doesn’t.” Forget women 18-34 – that was a total bust – leave that to the Oxygen network.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Just finished watching BATB. The last scene is an example of sheer stupidity on the part of the characters and the writers. The guy jumps down four, five stories on to a truck then jumps off the truck, heedless of who may be watching (yes, it’s night – so what? New York is “the city that never sleeps’.) And then Evan just happens to be going to Cat’s and stands there watching him.

I mean, seriously? In any other show, that scene alone would result in the critics going mad. It’s so stupid on every possible level.

  • Immaculate

    I didn’t give any advice.

@RSH is the epitome of critical pretentiousness.

  • gerry

we’ll see. i bet the folks at cw still haven’t made up their minds.

  • HV

I’m keeping Heart of Dixie Tues @ 8:00 because I like to make few changes. Beauty and the Beast was moved to Monday @ 8:00 so that The Originals could air after The Vampire Diaries, and Monday was the one night that would have two vacant spots. I chose to put The Hundred after it as opposed to any other new show because I felt it would do the best of any show so it can get the worst lead-in. Do you think that this upcoming year the CW may put Nitka before ANTM on Fridays? I don’t think that ANTM will move from Fridays unless the CW gets another reality show to put after it in the year, then I think it will end up on Monday @ 8:00 with Beauty and the Beast Friday @ 9:00.

  • starship

ANTM is pulling terrible ratings, I doubt it will be moved from Summer to regular season ever again. I’m sure the CW will find some filler for the Fall season that can do better than it.

  • blergh

Can we get you your own network? those trashtastic ideas sound pretty good…

  • Norma

Dixie and Beast is not strong enough to be lead ins so they are not gonna be lead ins for any show if they are renewed they will air 9pm. Nikita is gonna stay on 8pm slot after all the drama this year where it showed that ANTM was a terrible lead in for it.

  • Jason50

@Dee- The CW should have enough to release five new shows. I think they should clean house and release six new pilots. As for your suggestions on shows:
1)I’m waiting on another Star Trek series, they can make a starfleet series or even move to the next next generation. I’m not picky
2)Not a big fan of Dukes of Hazzard but I miss car chases on TV, so it’s ok. I made a suggestion last year to do a Driver series(based on the game). About a guy who makes a living being a getaway driver. Not as stylish as the upcoming Transporter series, more dark and gritty
3)As for an Arrow spinoff, the only spinoff I want to see is Deathstroke. The greatest DC character ever!
4)The Ghost idea sounds good(at first I thought it was based on the Dark Horse comic, which would be awesome), from the movie it has a good mix of love story and supernatural so if done right could appeal to more people.

  • Ade

BatB, TCD and Cult should all three be cancelled and The CW should pick up five new pilots for next season.

This is how I think the schedule should be.

    8pm: Hart of Dixie
    9pm: Company Town

    8pm: Oxygen
    9pm: Supernatural

    8pm: Arrow
    9pm: The Tomorrow People

    8pm: The Vampire Diaries
    9pm: The Originals

    8pm: Nikita
    9pm: Repeats

    The Hundred

  • Norma

Great schedule just think you should switch the monday line up around

  • JulieDawn

According to another site, TCD and Cult have been ‘removed’ from the new CW TV Now promo. Just watched it and sure enough, they are nowhere to be seen.

BATB is still prominently featured though, along with SPN, TVD, Arrow, HOD and Nikita.

    Hint of things to come?

And just as an FYI, some of the BATB writers and producers, along with star Kristin Kreuk, are holding a panel at the Anaheim WonderCon later today. A panel that was added to the schedule relatively late as these things go (only a couple of weeks ago). This is something the network isn’t going to do for a show they’ve already given up on.

  • Sadie Saxton

    Wht=y am I being censored?

  • Sadie Saxton

this sucks. Can’t say what I want. Comments being trapped.

  • JulieDawn

@Sadie Saxton – I couldn’t get my post above yours to ‘take’ until I removed the name of a rival website (just the name, didn’t attempt any link), and replaced it with simply “another site”.

So it’s probably just something completely innocent in your post that the filter has an issue with, try re-wording things.

  • Sadie Saxton

You helped me and I appreciate that. This is all done in humor. but at the same time is not. Nothing against you guys. but

    Desperate much?
THAT WEBSITE is by no means the pinnacle of Tv Journalism.
Your obsession with BatB is making me worried you’re going to be found in a hotel room overdosed on Cheetos and Vodka pining for a non-existent centaur lover to save you. That’s why I’m giving you this reality check. #You’rewelcome

Chill, while it has a chance to be renewed, doesn’t mean it will, but seriously stop trolling the internet with your beastly deprived friends on every post about this show, calling this show the best thing since sliced bread. I’ve had sliced bread, and Batb ain’t better.

I hope when all this is over you’ll pull your lady parts back down from your brain and find a way to live again. #You’reWelcome

  • JulieDawn

    Okay @Sadie Saxton

I helped you out in good faith, yes you thanked me for that, but then still continued to respond with a comment that’s just plain rude, cruel, and in no way amusing. I would say the same whether it was directed at me or anyone else, although I am speaking for myself here, I have no idea what ‘Chili” may or may not feel about your comments. You say this was done in humour, and that it was “nothing against you guys”, but your idea of humour is actually a bit frightening.

If you actually read the content of my post, at no time did I say that (the other website) was making any prediction, or is any pinnacle of journalism blah blah.
I simply commented that it was that site that first posted the new promo…a promo made by the CW…a promo that I did watch…and then I and only I made the comment wondering if it was a hint (by the CW, not by this other site).
Now, I could be wrong but I would guess that a promo made by the actual network that actually airs the shows IS something to be taken seriously. So before you bash out any more inane comments in future, please actually read/research what you’re replying to. You’ll save yourself the embarrassment of being called out for it.

Also, the comment about WonderCon was just straight fact, with my own opinion tacked on the end – an opinion rooted in fact, because we know the CW does not spend money for no reason. Hardly a ‘desperate’ comment, just a comment.
In addition, just because I choose to comment somewhat frequently and occasionally voraciously about BATB, does not mean I am ‘obsessed’ to the level you ascribe to me. Nor am I desperate. I am perfectly in touch with reality, thank you, and I will continue to defend and/or give my opinions on what I like or don’t like on this site, on this topic and the many other threads here I also often post in – completely unrelated to BATB.

Your assumption that I live my life obsessed with this show, when I post about it here a few times a week, is laughable. Yes I do love the show. Yes I feel it should be renewed. Yes I know that the odds are against it, so of course I’m going to support it and talk about it. If you want to target an obsessed person (regardless of which side of the BATB bandwagon they’re on), there are several others on these threads who seem to have made a career out of posting multiple posts umpteen times a day, saying the same thing again and again to the point we’ve all become numb to it.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, as we all are. However, you are not entitled to belittle others for theirs in the manner that you have, and think you’re being clever or amusing. Getting your facts right before you gleefully bash someone is kind of important. And talking about overdoses is never funny, no matter what the context.

  • Norma

This CW TV NOW promo where is it ?
It certainly sound like you are on to something with that promo if its true

  • SecretShame

Norma, I suspect that putting up a link will simply get this comment stuck in a spam filter. But you’ll find it pretty quick if you put “CW” “tv now” “revised” “promo” into your search engine.

It’s certainly a bit odd that the CW have put out a promo featuring all of their currently airing shows except two. And one of those two (Cult) is certainly doomed. The implication seems to be that Nikita, HoD and BatB are still in the renewal running, while Cult and TCD are not. That would also fit the numbers: BatB and HoD have been getting 150% of TCD’s ratings recently.

I wouldn’t assume that making the promo means renewal, but it does imply that a decision to cancel hasn’t been taken as of yet. At least if we aren’t all reading too much into this.
