Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- March 24, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult  0.38
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.76
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :| :| :| 0.93
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.94

Beauty & The Beast ratings ticked up a tenth last week. Better than the alternative, but not enough to have the Cancellation Bear change his prediction.

As noted last week, the biggest thing the show has going for a second season is simply the fact that were Beauty & The Beast canceled, along with Cult and The Carrie Diaries as currently predicted, the CW would only have 5 hours of "veteran" scripted shows for next Fall, and they've never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule with fewer than 6. In this case, the trend is Beauty & The Beast's friend.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

-
From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Norma

If you google ‘CW TV Now revised promo spoilers 2013′ it should come up near the top, you want the one dated today, not back in Feb. (I noticed it now comes up as posted to several sites, not just the one found it on before.)

I imagine it’s also probably somewhere on the CW site, but as I’m in Canada their video service doesn’t work for me, so I haven’t checked that.

  • Sadie Saxton

    @juliedawn
Embarrassed? Called out? Research? I’m surprised you can even use these words in a sentence. Seems to me you’re just whining because I’ve pointed out your delusions are just that. You’re welcome. The only promo that matters is the one the CW releases next season. And Julie, it’s not just this site, your name pops in several I can’t name because of the filter. Research, it’s my friend. Could be yours too if you were slightly less fixated on a certain show. But alas, this is the Internet, the only place you beasties dare roar. So roar away. See if it matters, but this site is not the place. Now go finish working on your batb poetry or something.
    You’re welcome

  • JulieDawn

    @Sadie Saxton

Never said I wasn’t active on other sites. But neither here nor anywhere else am I delusional.

And by the way, unlike you, I won’t be googling your user name or doing anything else vaguely creepy or stalkerish. You epitomize all the things you accuse me of being.

I have no idea why you’ve chosen me to fixate on, but it’s not acceptable online or anywhere else, and you’re close to crossing some lines here. Please stop.

  • Sadie Saxton

Who said anything about googling? I’m sorry, you’re not THAT important. Hey guys I think I just hooked the troll though.
    You’re welcome

  • Gus

@Richard Steven Hack: “That utterly has nothing to do with it. Nikita is slated for syndication and that’s the only reason it was renewed for season three.” I have read and heard reports of the current CW President liking Nikita but be that as it may, Nikita was getting low ratings before being renewed for season three and it is getting low ratings now. The current renew /cancel scorecard for the CW shows Nikita just ahead of two shows that have been cancelled (Emily Owens MD, 90210) another show that has ended its’ run (Gossip Girl) and another show that is ready to bite the dust (Cult). Every other CW show is ahead of Nikita in the ratings. If Nikita was cancelled this May it would be out of common sense and fairness.

  • Tom

    @ Sadie Saxton

You rock!!! You’ve truly captured the essence of the entire Beastling coven that infests this site. The Beastlings will never understand that this is a ratings oriented site and not a fan site. It’s to be expected that posters on this site will inevitably express differing opinions about the merits of various television programs. However, very few of those opinions are as vacuous as the ones expressed by those waifs who are so conspicuously besotted with the Beast. As I’ve said many times before, it’s long past time for them to move to some fangirl site where they can share their romantic fixation with their peers. So, thanks again for your insights.

  • SecretShame

    @Gus

“Fairness” has nothing to do with cancellation decisions. And “common sense” is measured only in money.

It simply does not matter that Nikita gets cancellation ratings. Or at least, it doesn’t matter as long as it avoids Cult-like ratings catastrophe. If it is renewed, and it is very likely that it will be, it will be renewed because there is money to be made by getting it to the magic 88 episodes for syndication purposes. There’s

    @Norma
We have to at least give BATB a chance at anchoring. But, as I said, that’s why I put The Hundred at 9:00. I believe it will be the strongest new series other than The Originals.

  • BatbFan

I do not understand why they have the need to always offend people who express their opinions in favor of BATB
The fans can be delusional everything they want, who cares? they hurt anyone with their predictions or expressions of desire, are just that, do not see why you have to take to heart what they say.
I always read post of people apparently feel superior by giving examples of what can and can not say on this page, which is about numbers and statistics and two lines below contradict throwing the worst insults to people who simply are supporting a show
The times I come here is to see how it’s going to my favorite show in the numbers and always try to say something positive in favor of it, and do not worry about those who do not like and I’m not offending those who think differently to me, thank God there is diversity and everyone can choose what you like and what not, that is the need to attack each other?
and as I always say no matter what you write here that will not change the view of network executives, they are the ones who decide not us.

  • Tom

    @ Batbfan

I don’t feel superior by citing numbers and statistics; I feel relevant. For the umpteenth time, this is a site that’s premised on following the ratings for shows on broadcast television. It would, therefore, seem fitting to at least make some effort to refer to ratings when commenting on programs. Instead, this site has lately been riddled by pointless testimonials from giddy Beastlings gushing about how infatuated they are with the Beast.
That sort of adolescent fan worship belongs on one of the many tribute sites on which fan girls worship this drivel. The really interesting thing is that a lot of the trash these honeys are talking actually comes from those sites. For example, the pointless mantra that “the Beast is getting better all the time.” Even some of the hard core fans posting here admit that the Beast has significant problems. So, buzzwords like diversity aren’t going to impress me. For the most part, posters who comment on other shows are pretty good about staying on topic. Now it’s time the Beastlings to either get with the program or get lost.

  • Restless

Just watched the promo. Guess that’s it for Cult and Carrie Dairies. Not that we didn’t already know that from the ratings.
I think Bill and Robert are right, and CW is keeping Beauty and the Beast to premiere five hours of older programming.

Also back off Tom and Sadie Saxton and everyone else being hateful. Quit attacking and trolling people. You really don’t have to piss on everyone’s parade all the time. There ain’t no one who sticks to talking just about the ratings on this site; the BATB fans are no different from any other. If you don’t like the new people posting, and you can’t stand to give them basic human respect, maybe it’s really time for you guys to find a new site instead of trying to chase them off.

  • david

The other day the la times on March 26 had a good article about the CW president talking about being happy about deversifying the networks audience. His plann is to bring the network from having shows geared to teens to make it a network geared to people in there twenties. He is ok with the median age of the viewer being 42 now. I think it is a good idea because the network was doing shows about highschool drama for to long now. I think the pilots by the casting and the brief description of them sound promising for next year.

  • kara

Beasties you shouldnt let Tom get to you. He has his OPINION. But thats all it is, his opinion not facts. Our ratings are steady, our social media activity has risen, and judging by the new cw promo we look to be on a good path for S2. More Cat/Vincent to come and I can’t wait!

  • Richard

This is what I think will work well:
    M
    8 Nikita or TCD
    9 Hart of Dixie
WHY: Hart of Dixie does not need a proper lead-in b/c it’s VERY stable on its own. Meanwhile, NIKITA can get more recognition on a new night. The Carrie Diaries I must say is suprisingly an AMAZING show and would love to see it stay despite a struggling fanbase.
     Tues
    8 new
    9 New or Supernatural
WHY: People are always asking/bashing CW to start anew. Well why not re-invent Tuesday nights?! Maybe CW might have at least one major hit. SPN has a loyal fanbase but, the 9 pm death slot might shed viewers.
    W
    8 New
    9 Arrow
WHY: 8 pm seems like a great Freshman start & Arrow pulls about the same as SPN di this year so why not put it in a less competitive slot while giving a new show a clean start.
    Thurs
    8 TVD
    9 Supernatural
WHY: TVD is a given & STRONG at 8 so leave it! At 9 which seems like a death slot in the past 2 years can change. And of course who wouldnt LOVE this pair – up???
    F
8 New OR *BatB OR ** Nikita
    9 ANTM OR New
WHY: CW can have a clean, fresh new look. Start all over OR at lat with Beauty and the Beast at 8 and at 9 something new. BatB may not do well as Fridays are arguably the hardest.
    * = if CW does not want to cancel it.
** = if The Carrie Diaries stays ( does not get cancelled.)

  • davie

    Cancel: (GG) (90210) Cult, TCD,
Renew: (TVD) (Arrow) (SPN) Nikita (Final Season), HOD (CW’s new Nikita(Season 3=Season 4))

If it comes down to it, maybe CW should renew B&TB for 13 Eps, and air it when one of their Pilots (inevidently) fail, they have a backup?

    MON:
    8-Heart of Dixie
    9-The Tomorrow People
    TUES:
    8-The Hundred
    9-Oxygen (13 Eps) The Selection (13 Eps)
    WEDS:
    8-Arrow
    9-SPN
    THURS:
    8-TVD
    9-The Originals
    FRI:
    8:Nikita
    9:Top Model/ Reruns/ (‘Cult’ like banishment?)

  • Norma

    @Restless

I just saw the promo to and it does not look good for TCD and Cult
But its 6 hour of returning shows – Arrow,Supernatural,Nikita,Dixie,Beast and TVD if you judge from that promo. I think Dixie and Nikita is a sure thing to come back.

  • Rachel

    So many horrible fake schedules.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Gus: “Nikita was getting low ratings before being renewed for season three”

That is true. Nikita’s season two average was pretty bad. Which is precisely WHY it had to have been renewed for syndication reasons only. Your notion that execs renew shows because they like them is essentially ridiculous because any exec that cost a network that many millions – deliberately – would be canned immediately. It’s not like those people have job security.

“and it is getting low ratings now.”

Which, now that it’s been renewed for syndication, are irrelevant because the studio is subsidizing the show by selling it for a low license fee.

“If Nikita was cancelled this May it would be out of common sense and fairness.”

No, it would be stupid since syndication revenue is second only to up front ad revenue for studio profitability.

  • Richard Steven Hack

JulieDawn: “And just as an FYI, some of the BATB writers and producers, along with star Kristin Kreuk, are holding a panel at the Anaheim WonderCon later today. A panel that was added to the schedule relatively late as these things go (only a couple of weeks ago). This is something the network isn’t going to do for a show they’ve already given up on.”

You may be right. OTOH, you may be wrong. They had a panel for TSCC in early 2009 at WonderCon here in San Francisco, and the show was very much doomed at that point. There was also a Human Target panel at WonderCon in its last season, and I was there pointing out to the panel how the show was competing with two other shows for renewal based on what I knew from this site – and Janet Montgomery said I probably knew more about it than they did! :-) – and it got canceled.

WonderCon doesn’t reveal its panels until very late before it occurs every year. The panel itself might have been scheduled last fall, who knows?

So I wouldn’t read too much into that – or the promo. The decision may not have been made yet to cancel BATB. If the show holds a .6 average, they might actually renew it. It would be a mistake, but they might do it. There’s no shortage of mistakes at the CW.

  • Bizarro

If B&TB holds up to a .6, I believe it will get renewed because the CW did give the show a back 9 when it fell to a .7 (TVD got a 1.5 the day before the CW announced B&TB would get a full season). They didn’t have too, they could of just put Cult after TVD instead in January. Back then they wouldn’t of known Cult would of flopped. Also the CW was going to do a random shuffle of rerun shows in the death slot but they choose to keep airing B&TB reruns instead of other CW shows. The CW wants B&TB to succeed badly. So I understand how its not dead yet. Shows on average cost $2 million to make per episode. If this is the case for B&TB, then they are getting $1.5 million back as I was hearing in the comments and would be paying $500,000 an ep probably cheaper since this is The CW. Which is really cheap and the CW loves cheap. Though if the show does fall again, I do see it being cancelled that promo was made probably when B&TB went back up. Five episodes can change a lot of things. It changed things for TSC though Beauty doesn’t won’t have to worry about expensive cost of special effects and locations as the reason for its cancellation. I remember AnnaLynne McCord said that her and the cast found out that 90210 was cancelled via Twitter. Really Twitter?! The CW couldn’t call and tell them that their show was cancelled. LOL!
