As the Cancellation Bear hides from predicting the renewal of any NBC sitcom save Parks & Recreation until the last possible moment, he's happy to headline the fact that Deception is certain to be canceled. That hadn't made the headline earlier. Now it has.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Whoa Kitty. Not sure where that is coming from.

Deception aired at a time when most NBC shows did not fare well. It did not get a huge initial turnout but many of those viewers left and did not return. This is a highly serialized show. Hard to jump in later unless you play catch up. I felt it was okay for a while but only improved much later in its short season. Until the last month or so it would have bard for me to tell people to watch this, it’s a great show. Based on the last month I could comfortably recruit people who like this type of show. But, it’s a numbers game and the numbers just don’t support renewal. My wishful thinking supports renewal but the numbers don’t. I am sure many who speak different languages as well as people in other countries watch Deception. This is not a language or race issue. This is a numbers issue. I am thankful they actually aired all episodes as planned. Other networks pulled shows with higher ratings leaving their small audiences hanging. This network also pulled poorly performing shows. They gave this one a fair shot. I just don’t think the network had the numbers of viewer to pull from. I also don’t believe the early shows supported success and growth. I hope it gets renewed but if it is not we should not be surprised. No upticks. Well, nothing of note.

I like this bear and the cappuccino bear on the other page.

  • Brenda

Deception is a great show, I loved it and wont be surprised either way.

  • Dan S

With the exception of P&R NBC needs to cancel the rest of their comedies. On Thur I’d move P&R to 8pm followed at 8:30pm by Assistance. At 9pm MJF comedy, at 9:30 Welcome to The Family & at 10pm SVU.

  • _JC

That might the most content-free R/C article ever, and we still have, what? 5-6 weeks to go?

This is gonna be fun :D

  • Dan

Deception is done, its a one and done series and just a bridge between Revolution.

Since NBC hasnt renewed anything, All I can say is what will certainly return

Dramas: SVU, Parenthood, Grimm, Revolution, Chicago Fire
Comedies: Parks & Rec, Go On, Community (more likely), Whitney (More likely)
Non Scripted: The Voice, Biggest Loser, Sing Off, Dateline

Everything else is likely to be cancelled but its actually a good thing because with these returning shows combined with new shows, NBC might have a chance to redeem itself, should they make a working schedule. Last year’s problem is that NBC was so reliant on The Voice that when it left, the remaining shows crumbled. Also if both Chicago Fire and Revolution are renewed, it will be the first time since 2008 that 2 NBC fall dramas were given second seasons (Chuck and Life)

  • Dan

@Spencer – No news on Up All Night, but its basically cancelled. The shows gone through more changes then Joan Rivers’ face and if the show were to return, they may as well not call it Up All Night. It started with a promising premise but unfortunately viewers didnt catch on. NBC likely wont announce it’s cancellation until May but why NBC wont cancel the show now is beyond me.

  • mat

I think go On will not be back as well as Whitney as the are really of no star quality with mentioning.

  • TV Addict

UGH!!! I just want Community to be renewed!!!
    Community is my life!!
My only friends are Jeff, Britta, Annie, Troy, Abed, Shirley, The Dean, Kevin?, and Pierce (but he and I had a falling out)

  • StevenD

As long as Parks is renewed I’m fine, which is almost certain to happen. Same with SVU

I really hope Go On is renewed, favorite new show this year. It has the potential to gain its audience back I think

I like Chicago Fire and Revolutions okay, so glad to see them almost certAin to come back. I’ d do a fantasy schedule but I’ll wait a little longer so see where the comedies go

  • Dahne

I’ve seen a lot of bear pictures but that one actually disturbs me.

@Kitty – On a website known for contentious baiting and trolling, you take the prize for most obnoxious. What does someone’s ethnicity, first language, or family background have to do with anything? I watched every single episode of Deception and live tweeted them. What I found to be the biggest turnoffs for a lot of people of various backgrounds were the fact that every person in law enforcement looked moronic at some point and there were few redeemable characters. Seriously, having your undercover police woman discuss being under cover and details about the case IN A HALLWAY where anyone could hear her multiple times does diminish the credibility of the show.

  • Cadinapa

Deception was just there as a fill in for Revaloution. I enjoyed it but knew it wouldn’t be renewed.

  • tanya

come on now…not deception…love that movie…revolution and deception are my top fav…so please come out with season 2..cant wait:)

  • Michael

    @Kitsune

    What are you on>>>>>>>{{

  • omabin

For NBC, these are the key points I would make:
    – drastically cut up on the comedy hours!! Keep the thursday 8-9 hour for syndication purposes and launch two new hit potential comedies at 9. They have to be self starters and they will need an insane amount of promotion. That has to be a major focus. Other than that, no more comedy! The schedule needs to be stabilized first.
    – revolution will be strong enough for a renewal and maybe a move, but not too far away from the voice. I say it should go to tuesdays at 10pm, still enjoying the indirect support of the voice, especially if a new genre drama goes to 9pm. That would leave two new post voice spots for nbc to launch new dramas
    – since there is no need for a filler in between the voice cycles next year, i would use the biggest looser to stabilize wednesdays in the fall, while providing chicago fire a stable lead in and saving promotional resources, which will be much needed for the Thursday comedies and for the new post the voice dramas. Then, after hours can be launched after the olympics promotion at 9, which should be compatible with chicago fire, while parenthood can air wednesdays at 8
    – for the love of god, give grimm some sort of companionship on fridays!

    Schedule:

    Monday
    The Voice
    The Voice
    New Drama

    Tuesday
    The Voice
    The Sixth Gun or Crossbones
    Revolution

    Wednesday
    The Biggest Looser/ Parenthood
    The Biggest Looser/ After Hours
    Chicago Fire

    Thursday
    Community
    Parks and Recreation
    New Comedy
    New Comedy
    Law and Order: SVU

    Friday
    Dracula
    Grimm
    Dateline

Thoughts? Only SVU, Revolution and SVU would move and they would have only 3 hours to promote for the fall. 4 if you count dracula, but the friday programming could have a hallowen november start which should help

  • Ted Craig

I don’t know if this means anything to their renewal prospects, but our local NBC affilate pre-empted the Courtney Cox Go On episode for a special from its sports department.

  • Brad

I wish I could block all the people who post their silly fantasy schedules. Please tell me there is a way.

  • Rebecca

Aw, I think it’s a cute and creative picture. I think GWK has a chance of coming back (along with the other comedies above it in the index). It’s above a .80 in the index, although usually shows at .88 and above come back so it’s lacking a bit. Some time soon I have to catch up on my missed shows – haven’t seen this week’s Revolution, GO or TNN yet.

  • Brandy

Smash is all I watch in nbc primetime and im sad its cancelled.
