As the cancellation bear hides from predicting the renewal of any NBC sitcom save Parks & Recreation until the last possible moment, he's happy to headline the fact that Deception is certain to be canceled. That hadn't made the headline earlier. Now it has.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Bill Gorman – Thanks for responding!

I got into watching Deception with my daughter before she moved out. It’s not the kind of show I normally watch, but wanted to see the outcome. The last show left us hanging. What happened to Mia when Wyatt grabbed her? and did Robert actually kill his own daughter? There should be a wrap up show so that people who were promised a conclusion aren’t left wondering what actually did happen. If that doesn’t happen, I’m not likely to watch another of your series. I doubt I’m the only one who feels this way!

  • ABC hater

That’s a damn good schedule! I’d just take Community and Go On out of the mix (maybe saving one for midseason). :)

  • HAPPY!

    @ABC hater
Thank you so much for the feedback :). I guess you could take either Go On, Whitney or Community out of the mix, but i figured short 13-15 episode seasons of Go One and Community could fill the slot until the Olympics. Considering Community is at 84 episodes, Sony will probably offer a cheap 13 episode deal to NBC to help it get above 88 episodes. It would probably make more sense just to either hold Go On or Whitney and add another half hour of Betty White (a cheap, relatively well rated show) instead. Then after the Olympics, either Go On or Whitney (which ever is saved for midseason) show could be put on Fridays at 8:30 with the possibility to move it to Thursday if it is needed to replace one of the new comedies that fails.

Is there any talks of NBC moving Smash & Deception to Bravo? Seems like a good fit for the network!

  • Sean

The bear is made of rice — brown rice I think.

  • Claire

I am hopeful that The New Normal will be renewed. Otherwise they wouldn’t be airing the finale after The Voice…

  • Rebecca

I agree….the bear looks like brown rice, with cheese bits added. I can’t tell what the black stuff is, but the blanket is an omelet.

  • Debbie

Please consider giving Deception a 2nd season! Don’t give up so early on this show…

  • That one Guy

Who watches Whitney I’m completely confused on why New Normal and Guys with kids are certain to be canceled but Whitney has a shot of renewel.

  • omabin

    @That One Guy,

Whitney is a second season show, so all else being equal (and that is not even true if you compare it for instance with the new normal), it will have a higher chance of coming back.

  • HAPPY!

What do you think of my schedule abov?

  • Nerlie

This show has a growing fan base and NBC would be foolish to cancel it. NBC should take a look at what happened with ABC’s Scandal last year. Scandal grew with word of mouth and is now a ratings gold mine. Deception is a good show with lots of potential and a great cast. If NBC gives it the promotion it deserves, I think it would be a hit for them!

“Is there any talks of NBC moving Smash & Deception to Bravo? Seems like a good fit for the network!”

    In a word: No

I don’t think Bravo even has any scripted programs, unless we admit that the Housewives drivel is in fact scripted to a degree.

Also I seriously doubt Bravo could afford either show, let alone both. If what some around here say is true, Smash costs something like 4 million an episode making it absolutely impossible for Bravo to program it.

Nice schedule up there. A few thoughts though:
    – I don’t think there is need for any show to fill in for the voice during the hiatus this year due to the olympics. They can just bring back the voice in february and they will be fine. That means that TBL is freed up to be used elsewhere, but you were actually already accounting for that.
    – However, I don’t think TBL should have two cycles a year. Also, I don’t watch the show, but does it really work only with an hour? What I would do would be have it on Wednesdays from 8 to 10 during fall. I would hold Parenthood for midseason and then after the Olympics, launch After Hours at 9. That way, they would guarantee a stable lead in for Chicago Fire during fall, not over expose the biggest looser, and focus their promotional resources during the fall elsewhere.
    – As for the comedies situation, I agree with you that they should stick to Thursdays. Yet: I am of the opinion that they should launch a power hour of comedies Thursdays at 9, all new starting in the fall (their two biggest comedies in development, that must be self-starters), and just put Community or Go On at 8 with Parks at 9. I don’t see the point of trying to launch anything against the big bang theory
    – As for friays, I don’t think there is room for comedies on two networks and ABC will kill NBC there. I would simply can Withney and hold Betty for midseason filler. Dateline can go there.

All told, I would do like this:

    The Voice
    The Voice
    New Drama

    The Voice
New Drama (Genre, like The Sixth Gun or Crossbones, to pair well with Revolution)

    The Biggest Looser/ Parenthood
    The Biggest Looser/ After Hours
    Chicago Fire

    Parks and Recreation
    New Comedy
    New Comedy
    Law and Order: SVU

What do you think? I would only start Dracula and Grimm during Halloween. Until then, use those slots for repeats of the new monday and tuesday dramas. That way, the only thing NBC has to promote in the early fall are the two new dramas on Monday and Tuesdays, and the Thursday hour of comedies.

  • Saddee2

NBC are you reallying to cancel Deception?? It deserves another chance on another night. It still has lots to tell. Such an awesome cast. Want to see Julien/Joanna relationship blossom. Please give it another chance. I don’t thing Robert Bowers killed his daughter. I think someone else did in the family not Julien.

  • HAPPY!

Thanks for all the great advice

  • BigBrotherFan

    Booooooooooo @TVBYTHENUMBERS I enjoyed DECEPTION

  • Jon

    Here are my cancellation predictions:

    Deception….no doubt
    1600 Penn…..no doubt
Guys with kids….but it saddens me, in my opinion its the best sitcom on NBC
Community…..is there any reason to go forward with this anymore
Up All Night….it might be done already
Whitney….I think her goose is cooked
The New Normal…..show has dropped like a lead balloon

For some reason I think they will give Go On another go, mainly because they probably want at least one new sitcom to make it. In my opinion I think they need to go back to the well with the sitcom’s they are piloting out, and maybe cut back and add another hour to drama tv.
