As the Cancellation Bear hides from predicting the renewal of any NBC sitcom save Parks & Recreation until the last possible moment, he's happy to headline the fact that Deception is certain to be canceled. That hadn't made the headline earlier. Now it has.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think the renewed will be Go On, The New Normal and Parenthood

  • Teen TV Addict

So has Smash been officially cancelled then? Because despite the move to the death slot, and the low ratings, I can’t find any official confirmation apart from on this site…

  • k neal

how am I going to “wrap up” the plot of Deception without a renewal of the show? rethink–nbc–it was a good series with excellent characters/actors.

  • bob

Is there ANY hope for Guys with Kids AT ALL? Jimmy Fallon involved? Anything….Anything….Yep desperate!

  • Funeral Dinner

The New Normal and Guys with Kids will be cancelled, I wasn’t sure about Whitney, but the ratings are way down from last season and Whitney Cummings has started doing her stand up comedy again, so that can’t be a good sign for her show. and Go On will probably get a pity renewal, but I can’t see it picking up any steam in it’s second season.

Why is “SMASH” listed as “canceled” when I can find no official announcement that NBC has done this?! Yes, the move to Saturdays in April certainly seems like the show’s burn-off death knell, but the ratings DID go up this past week and are close to the other Tuesday 10pm 18-49 network ratings now. If it continues to go up, isn’t there a chance NBC will leave it where it is or maybe even renew it?

  • Jazz

I did like GWK the one time I saw it but for some reason never went back. I guess I had that feeling it might be canceled and did not give it another chance. Maybe I should have. It had some funny moments and some actors I like. I tried Go On a few times and did like what I saw but it just feels not quite there yet. I grin but don’t laugh. Something doesn’t work. I never DVR’d it.

I want NBC to succeed largely because they are struggling and because CBS shows are formulaic and ABC gets on my nerves sometimes. But it’s hard to get invested in NBC shows. It feels like most just go away. I watch Community but it can go. It had a great run. I really like Grimm and added Revolution and Deception this year. The shows are different. NBC seems to do dark and odd shows but I don’t know if I am correct since I don’t watch any other shows. Over the years I sampled Awake, Undercovers and The Event but they went away. Do No Harm was fine. But it felt like a summer show. Lite. Maybe NBC needs to define itself. Are they dark and odd? CBS is procedural. ABC is soapy.

  • KC

I really like Whitney. It is “morphing” into a really great show. Look at Friends even. The first 2 seasons had some episodes that were hits and others that fell way flat. And then…it was great. It just took time for the characters to gel. If they get a third season, it will be great as the characters are great now. However, last night it seemed like it was more the series finale than the season finale. I hope not!

  • Andy G

you can pretty much count Up All Night as canceled. It was supposed to resume filming in February in a multi-cam reboot with a weird show-within-a-show concept, but Christina Applegate quit before they filmed anything. I’m glad, the new concept sounded horrible.

  • Rollie Dethloff

NBC should try comedies on Fridays next year.

8:00 Go On (family sitcom to compete with LMS on ABC 13 episodes initially)
    8:30 NEW COMEDY/New Normal (13)/Guys With Kids (13)
9:00 Reality Show to compete with Shark Tank on ABC/New Normal/Hannibal
9:30 Whitney (13)/Community (13)/NEW COMEDY (Unless they do reality or Hannibal
    10:00 Grimm (22)/Rock Center/Dateline

    @Patrick G
Why is “SMASH” listed as “canceled” when I can find no official announcement that NBC has done this?!

Networks rarely officially confirm cancellations prior to a lack of renewal come May. However, NBC would not have moved Smash to Saturdays if they hadn’t already decided on cancelling it.

but the ratings DID go up this past week and are close to the other Tuesday 10pm 18-49 network ratings now.

Yes, the ratings are up, but they’re still very bad. Much lower than other 10pm shows on broadcast and much lower than NBC’s other dramas.

If it continues to go up, isn’t there a chance NBC will leave it where it is or maybe even renew it?

No, there’s no chance that NBC will leave Smash on Tuesdays. They already have a show ready to replace it, which actually has a chance to be successful, while there’s no reason to think Smash will start getting good ratings after two months of horrid numbers.

  • cadburyeasteregg

Let’s NOT bring Deception back, I want to see John Larroquette in something of better quality. Let’s let Deception die the death it needs.

  • Vicki

Smash was so great in its first season…not so much second season. Too bad they have to tamper with something that works just fine. However, the cast is very talented. Hope to see them on other projects

  • RStrzal

How is it that Smash is canceled, but Up All Night is pending when it doesn’t even have the star on board anymore?

  • DanOregon

I realize 1600 is a likely goner, but the two eps on Thursday might have been the two best. Skip goes to a Rave with a Princess and the First Couple realize people only laugh at their jokes because of the their title and the finale featured a missing “certificate.”
I think they’ve finally calibrated the humor on the show.

It’s a shame that Up All Night is probably ending. But I see no reason why they would keep it.

  • Rebecca

I have really enjoyed 1600 Penn and hope it comes back. Same for Guys With Kids. Whitney’s first season finale seemed like a series finale to me, as did its second season finale – I don’t expect it to come back but if it does I’ll watch. Other shows are more enjoyable, though, IMO, including The New Normal and Go On (of those two, I only really expect Go On to get a second season). We’ll see what happens in May. I like Smash, too, but I’m accepting its fate and hoping it ends well.

  • BossBoo

    10 for deception

  • Rebecca

    @DanOregon
The actress who played the princess in that 1600 Penn episode you mentioned is the one who plays CiCi on New Girl. Nice to see her getting guest roles. I like both shows…. rooting for 1600 Penn.
