After 12 “episodes” the Scripted Cable Renew/Cancel Status has been canceled.  It debuted on November 7, 2012 and the list that “aired” on February 23 was its finale.

I know what you’re thinking.  This: “I read it. All my friends read it. Your stats system must be antiquated!”  And this: “TV by the Numbers never loved that list and didn’t want it to succeed. They launched it on a Saturday. A SATURDAY! C’mon!”

Kidding aside, our tracking isn’t antiquated and is pretty much exactly the “full census” measurement that many fans clamor to see utilized for TV shows. Sadly, even with a full census data the poor performers still get canceled.  I launched it on Saturdays so I could give it extra “promotion” by featuring it more prominently on our home page. That helped, but not enough.

A movie or a save by Netflix don't seem likely, but maybe another site will pick it up!

its sad that you couldn’t vanish this to Saturday’s and let it finish out its run but NO you had to cancel it.

I agree with the comments that maybe a monthly update would’ve been more workable. Drop the predictions, and just list the status: renewed, return date, etc.

  • Sab G

    I like Steve’s suggestion.

  • Fake Me Out

Will it be out on DVD and will you do an episode by episode commentary for the extras?

BTW, did you count tweets? Tweets are like real ratings ya know …

  • Dan

@Steve – Bi-Monthly or Monthly would work really well, it doesnt have to be every week because some weeks not too many shows get cancelled. At least with every two weeks enough renewals and cancellations can build up to gain interest.

There were no predictions to drop. it was all status, no predictions to begin with. Had we done predictions I have no doubt readership would’ve been much better. But unfortunately the cable shows can’t be reliably predicted with only a little bit of data as is the case w/the broadcast network shows.

The Futon Critic is the best resource for this purpose. It may not be UP TO THE SECOND but, per capita it has the most information.

it’s definitely not an April Fool’s joke. If it was, I’d have at least included the updated table!

Ascribe the predictions to a cartoon dog.

@TVKel: for the purpose of looking up things on a show by show basis, perhaps. If they have an aggregated list of all shows let me know and I’ll add a link to the post.

I’m boycotting the site in protest! Then I’m going to send several thousand scripted cable scripts to TVBTN headquarters to let them know what passionate, dedicated fans this list has.

  • Ken

So does this mean the cancellation bear caught his own tail?

  • Dan

I’m sure it could return next season in some form, it just didn’t work out this season the way Bill and Robert did it. That might be the best way to summarize this whole thing.

And predictions are too difficult for cable shows especially like HBO and Showtime because there are other factors that they consider.

You are the Weakest Link. Goodbye.

  • Evan

The list was kinda cool but it didn’t really add much because everything is basic knowledge you could find out on your own. But it was cool how it was organized and how it added the most recent shows to the list. I really feel like predicting cable shows ratings could be a big hit for this site. Sure it would be unpredictable BUT I’m sure you could still be able to guess correctly. Cables growing so much now it would be crazy to leave it in the dust when coming to renewal/cancellation indexes!

Comments like this are why I love this site.

    Put it this way.

If you want to find out the status of a certain series go to the futoncritic and that site will tell you if the show has been cancelled, when it will return, or which season its in and how many episodes it has.

If you want to find out about a shows ratings and how it ranks in the renew cancel index for primetime series by network, stay on this site.

Both sites have news daily regarding shows getting cancelled, renewed, or picked up.
