Bubble Watch: A Sad Fate for "Happy Endings?" + CBS + More 'Beauty and the Beast' vs. 'Carrie Diaries' + "Nashville'

When it comes to bubble status, like the Renew/Cancel Index we're focusing on the likelihood that a show will be renewed **for next season** (2013-14).  Certain shows are toss-ups where based on the ratings, the renewal decisions could go either way and not be surprising.

Here, “canceled” is used interchangeably with “won’t be renewed for next season” and is not meant to imply a show will be yanked off the schedule in the current season though obviously the two outcomes are not mutually exclusive. The semantics police and lawyers should feel free to break out the handcuffs and plead their cases in the comments.

This Isn't The Renew/Cancel Index

Though the basic methodology is the same (intra-network relative ranking of shows by adults 18-49 ),unlike the Renew/Cancel Index which predicts what would happen if the season ended now, Bubble Watch prognosticates about what will happen by May. The two are still usually closely aligned, and almost certainly very closely aligned towards the end of the season.

Another Network Will Have to Save Happy Endings

Happy Ending's fate on ABC has been sealed for a while. I'm not basing that on one Friday's worth of preliminary ratings (and it was Good Friday to boot) but rather that ABC had already shipped it off to Friday.  At that point I wasn't sure ABC would take the show even if Sony offered it to them for $0.00, and that doesn't seem likely. Consider that ABC owned the similarly ratings-challenged Cougar Town and still shipped it off to TBS. ABC doesn't own Happy Endings, so its pretty clear they're done with it.

Will another network pick it up? I don't know. I never like those odds, but nor can they be ruled out. While Sony isn't likely to give the show away for nothing, there is a history to suggest it is sometimes willing to do deep discounts. With regard to syndication proximity, Happy Endings is in a worse position than Cougar Town was last year, but not dramatically worse (Happy Endings will end the current season with 57 episodes, Cougar Town had 61 after its last season on ABC.)

CBS Renews Pretty Much Everything Except Criminal Minds and Two and a Half Men

CBS announced the renewal of several shows including The Good Wife and The Mentalist. Notably absent from the announcement were Criminal Minds and Two and Half Men which we predict (and are still predicting) will be renewed. Though I have removed the "likely" and "certain" distinctions in the table below, both shows are still certain renewals. Chalk it up to contract negotiations in the case of Criminal Minds and both contract negotiations and licensing negotiations in the case of Two and a Half Men.

The Carrie Diaries Downgraded to Likely Cancellation; "Beauty and the Beast" Still a Likely Cancellation

I've downgraded The Carrie Diaries to likely cancellation so now have both it and Beauty and the Beast as likely cancellations. I still favor "Carrie" ever so slightly but that's only because if CW renews Beauty and the Beast it will land somewhere else on the schedule than Thursday at 9pm and its ratings can be expected to fall.

I don't expect any announcement for either show until the upfronts in May. The above predictions could still change several times between now and then!

Nashville & Body of Proof

Yes,  I noticed that Body of Proof is recently out-rating Nashville.  For now, that alone doesn't sway me to change the predictions for either. But that could change very soon. Besides, the "bubble" section in the table below is looking pretty sparse now.

Note: only scripted shows that have aired at least one episode this season are in the table below.

Happy Endings is such a great show, I really hope it makes it somewhere.

  • Dan S

I think the remaining on the bubble shows you have should move to cancellation predicted. I just don’t see any of these shows returning especially Whitney. On the renewal predicted side I would move both The Neighbors & I hate to say it Nashville to on the bubble also. Otherwise I agree with the designations of the other shows.

  • Ally

I dont think Beauty and the Beast’s ratings would decrease too much if it were moved to another night. The CW has repeats on Tuesday’s after ‘Hart of Dixie’ and though i know repeats dont count 4 much, its ratings are decent enough. i’m sure if it were moved there or monday nights it would maintain its current range of ratings (.5-.7)
Also, in comparison to TCD, Beauty and the Beast has done Much better with way less promotion. Fan Excuse bingo, i know.
I’ve got my fingers crossed for BatB, and hoping the ratings when it returns April 18th will be better.

  • Hannah

In the first paragraph about Happy Endings, it is “they’re”, not “their”

  • omabin

I am fairly disapointed with this edition. I was expecting you to come back to the neighbours since last week you made it clear that you were ignoring its ratings since they were surrounded by repeats, which was not the case this week. I was also expecting something regarding Nashville and Body of Proof, but all you say is that you acknowledge it but that you still have one as renewal and the other as canceled, but you don’t explain why, which you usually do fairly well – I would put both on the bubble, but at leas the upgrade or downgrade of one of the is in order.

    Other disagreements
    – I still say Happy Endings is a bubble show, but I may be completely wrong in there.
    – I would put Beauty and the Beast as bubble at this point because it has some chance of coming back. Carried does not. I don’t usually use this type of arguments, but the cw had a promo with all of its shows airing, and this week they’ve redone the promo so as to exclude cult, 90210 and the carrie diaries. Carrie is clearly doomed imo and that sort of shows it. Beauty has some chance of coming back and that should be the definition of a bubble show.

These are fairly minor, the main issues I have really are The Neighbours/ Body of Proof and Nashville as I’ve said.

  • Jeff

    * so it’s pretty clear they’re done with it…

  • Felipe

Why Law & Order is on “Renewal predicted”? The show doesn’t works good…

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Robert Seidman

In the first paragraph about Happy Endings, it is “they’re”, not “their”

Fixed. with the there, their, they’re police satisfied, we’ll move on to the its vs. it’s policing!

  • LoLa

just a quick question does at least one show have to be cancelled every season, becuase i always see for example carrie diaries vs beauty and the beast. say that for example cbs next year has good rating for every of their shows from 2013 to 2014 does a show still need to be cancelled

  • omabin

    @Dan S.,

I think there is a somehow considerable chance that MC returns, although it is up for debate – then again, that is what the definiton of bubble should be. Also, I think one of the three NBC bubble comedies will come back. I think it is more between Go On and Community for the 8h spot on Thursday as sacrificial lamb (Community would be my guess), but all three have some sort of chance. I think they belong on the bubble.

  • disney rocks

Why is Body of Proof on cancellation? Its certain to come back next year and hopefully it’ll air thursdays @8 at it seems compatible to greys and hopefully won’t be too dead in the death slot. It shouldnt be on the bubble, let alone cancellation predicted! But, Nashville will still be renewed too.

    – Also, move BATB to the bubble.
    – Malibu Country should be moved to renewal.

  • Tommy

Body of Proof should be moved up to on the Bubble and Nashville should be moved down to the Bubble. If abc CANCELED gcb last season and that got 1.6, nashville does not stand a chance.

  • Raykov

@Dan S – So you think that NBC could launch a schedule with only one returning comedy? They entered this season with 6 returning shows… At least 3 comedies will be renewed IMO – Community has an edge because of syndication episodes and Go On has done pretty good (except with the period when they had Off Their Rockers for a lead-in)…

  • Justin121

The Good Wife is renewed haha :D

  • a p garcia

I never could understand HE, so I am happy for HE’s fate. I could understand BatB and I am too old for TCD.

  • Michael

Nashville is DEFINITELY on the bubble at this point.

  • Iggy

Robert, I know this is just a dumb blog to you, but it’s not that difficult to learn how to spell possessive pronouns.

  • Bee

i think the next 2 weeks will clear up a little what’ll happen with nashville. i really hope HTLYWP gives it a boost.

it only got beat by BOP this week by 0.1 and that was after a month off. anyway, both of them + revenge are all doing around the same ratings level now: decent, but not good enough or low, but not 100% dead.

come on, any other cable network! comedy central! TBS! FX! FXX! someone pick up my HE!

  • Anon

Does anyone remember the good old days where a hiatus actually increased a shows ratings? </3

  • Brandy

@Ally, just cause batb reruns were shown on tues for a while dosent mean itll move there_Arrow and CD repeated for a while on fri but didnt move there and plus ANTM reruns instead of BATB reruns will be shown on Tues starting Tues.Secondly, IF Nikita was moved to fri with a few 0.6_0.7 but mainly 0.8_1.0 in its first season after VD and that was underperforming, theres very little chance BATB dosent move to fri if reneeed after mainly 0.5_0.6 in season one and yrs, its ratings would fall on fri cause young people dont stay home to watch tv fri nights.
