This is a special short week version of the post. The table above includes news and ratings through Wednesday, March 27 only.

Which CBS show(s) not currently renewed or canceled would you devour? (Vote for as many shows, as many times as you want. As are all internet polls, this is meaningless.)

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
-
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Holly
CBS doesn’t own Criminal Minds either.

CBS has the domestic syndication rights for Criminal Minds.

  • Hardline_Pro

    CSI: NY and Golden Boy.

Nice try at a putdown, but you failed!

    @Nick
Good point! A new drama would die on Friday.
Change the Friday at 8 show to Undercover Boss instead of a new drama (after Unforgettable finishes its season).

  • omabin

    @Ultima,

I am sorry, but how is moving Elementary to Friday a worse move than premiering yet a new show on Fridays as they have been trying to do over and over? Yes, sometimes it does work as Grimm, but it is very rare. Why not move something that is doing okay, albeit non spectacularly, and thus should be able to help fridays, while freeing up the slot of lead-out of the 2nd highest rated drama on the channel? What is your suggestion? I don’t think Elementary will get to keep the slot, especially as Intelligence seems taylor made to be paired with POI… Where else can it go? Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays are all full. There is Sunday if they really want to send H50 to Friday and Elementary to Sunday, but at this point both are graveyeards for CBS of equal scale as far as dramas are concerned, and I think Elementary fits the friday audience much better and h50 fits the sunday audience much better. But if you want to swap them it wouldn’t change the schedule that much.
Also, if you really want to leave Elementary there, what is your suggestion for third new hour? I already have Monday and Tuesdays with a new drama. Do you want to send CSI to fridays instead of elementary? I suppose it is possible, but I don’t think it is worth it, and I think next year POI will be a better lead-in than CM, which is aging faster than before ratings wise.
I am genuinely curious to see what do you propose since you think it is such a bad idea to send it to fridays!

    What CBS should do:

    Sunday:
    8:00 – The Amazing Race
    9:00 – The Mentalist
    10:00 – The Good Wife

    Monday:
    8:00 – How I Met Your Mother
    8:30 – Mike and Molly
    9:00 – 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 – Two and a Half Men
    10:00 – Elementary

    Tuesday:
    8:00 – NCIS
9:00 – NCIS: Red (New Drama)
    10:00 – NCIS: Los Angeles

    Wednesday:
    8:00 – Survivor
    9:00 – Criminal Minds
    10:00 – CSI

    Thursday:
8:00 – The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 – Mom (New Comedy)
    9:00 – Person of Interest
    10:00 – Intelligence (New Drama)

    Friday:
    8:00 – Hawaii-Five 0
9:00 – Beverly Hills Cop (New Drama)
    10:00 – Blue Bloods

    - I think they should put Mom after The Big Bang Theory since How I Met Your Mother and Two and a Half Men are ending and they need new hit comedies to replace them, and that looks like the safest timeslot.

    - I switched The Good Wife and The Mentalist because The Good Wife is not a good lead-in for The Mentalist.

  • Holly

    omabin,

I see the argument for not trying a new show on Friday, but why not 5-0, CSI, or Mentalist? CBS needs Elementary to make it 4 seasons. Why risk moving it to Friday on its second season?

Also, you put 5-0 on your first schedule twice.

  • KJ Styles

People who are saying all of them seriously just need to shut up. If you don’t watch these shows, then why would you care if they got renewed or cancelled? Especially if it’s not at the expense of a show you do watch?

Anyway, I’d keep Criminal Minds and Two and a Half Men and cancel the rest.

  • JakeSnake

Two and a Half Men should go because popular or not, it’s far outlived its usefulness in my book. I would spare Criminal Minds, but everything else not renewed so far I’d axe in a second.

  • Nick

    @omabin

CBS doesn’t leave returning shows to midseason, so every schedule you do like that is not a plausible one (especially because you are leaving not 1, but 2 shows).

First of all, I really don’t think my schedule is plausible. I know CBS isn’t going to save a veteran for midseason. But I think they’ve been way to narrow-minded with that. I will shorten it down to 1 show, though. Here’s my schedule:

    Mon-
8: How I Met Your Mother (full final season)
8:30: Two and a Half Men
    9: 2 Broke Girls
    9:30: Super Clyde (new)
    10: Beverly Hills Cop (new)

    Tue-
    8: NCIS
9: Untitled NCIS: LA spinoff (new)
    10: NCIS: Los Angeles

    Wed-
    8: Survivor
    9: Criminal Minds
    10: CSI

    Thu-
    8: The Big Bang Theory
    8:30: Mom (new)
    9: Person of Interest
    10: Intelligence (new)

    Fri-
    8: Crazy Ones (new)
    8:30: Mike & Molly
    9: Elementary
    10: Blue Bloods

    Sat-
    8: Beverly Hills Cop (R)
    9: The Mentalist (R)
    10: 48 Hours Mystery

    Sun-
    7: 60 Minutes
    8: The Amazing Race
    9: The Good Wife
    10: Hawaii Five-0

Midseason – The Mentalist, Rules of Engagement, Undercover Boss

I’ve switched Elementary and Undercover Boss. Is that better?

  • Alex

Golden Boy is extremely underrated and should be renewed but I doubt it. Vegas is also great but that’s likely going to get cancelled as well

  • Jon

@maryann…..I live Vegas too and have been championing it’s cause all year. It’s a quality show, and I hope it does well on Friday night.

  • Dee

Personally, I would love to see CBS defy expectations. That’s not to say they will, but, as long as we are speculating, why not step out there a little bit? Suppose that Criminal Minds negotiations break down. Suppose that they find they have a large number of really good comedy pilots. Suppose they look at the current weakness of the competition and decide this is the time to make some more ambitious moves. Then, a line-up like this might be productive:

    SUNDAY -
    60 Minutes
    The Mentalist
    THE SURGEON GENERAL
    The Good Wife

    MONDAY -
    How I Met Your Mother
    Mike and Molly
    2 Broke Girls
    MOM
    LITTLE WHITE LIES (Debra Messing)
    THE CRAZY ONES

    TUESDAY -
    NCIS
    INTELLIGENCE
    Person of Interest

    WEDNESDAY -
    NCIS: LA
    BEVERLY HILLS COP
    CSI

    THURSDAY -
    The Big Bang Theory
    THE MATTHEW BRODERICK SHOW
    Two and a Half Men
WHERE THERE’S A WILL (Will Arnett)
    Elementary

    FRIDAY -
    Hawaii Five-0
    Vegas
    Blue Bloods

    SATURDAY -
    The Amazing Race
    Survivor
    48 Hours Mysteries

  • anotherhour

    @Mark
The Amazing Race plays well with The Simpsons, I wouldnt move it, Putting Undercover Boss up against The Simpsons would kill Undercover Boss, UB is like a nice “seat filler” you don’t have to follow it weekly to get whats going on.

  • Brad

The bear has likely already eaten ‘Friend Me’ too. I don’t expect that show to ever see the light of day.

  • Teddy

    Don’t cancel Golden Boy!

  • michel

CSI NY needs to stay onley show why i watch to cbs they already took my other favorite

  • omabin

    @Holly,

My point is that at this point, in most nights there really isn’t a significant distinction between Sunday ratings and Friday ratings for CBS as far as dramas are concerned!
    - CSI NY Average: 1.7
    - The Good Wife Average: 1.7
    - Blue Bloods Average: 1.4
    - The Mentalist Average: 1.8

Part of it may be attributed to the individual failure of the good wife (I love the show, just going by the ratings here), but the point that Sundays are almost as much of a graveyard as Fridays for CBS dramas at this point still stands. I think it is almost equally bad to send Elementary to Sundays than it is to Fridays, since both have low ratings and are basically being used to syndication sanctuaries by CBS at this point.

Bearing this in mind, I think H50 is more in line with the Sunday audience and with the amazing race lead-in whereas Elementary is more in line with the friday audience and with blue bloods.

As for the move of CSI instead of Elementary, I have toyed with it and I think that if CBS goes for 2 comedy hours, that is definitely the right move. However, if they do not, I still say that CSI will be a stronger show next year than Elementary and that POI will be a stronger show than Criminal Minds, hence its lead-out will have higher chances of succeeding. In addition, I also think the buzzy Intelligence is likely to be picked up and that sounds like a perfect lead-out for PoI (sometimes pilot buzz means nothing, I know, this is just a minor argument). Regardless, I am fine with CSI being moved instead, it is just not my preference.

As for my first schedule, it should have NCIS-Red on Tuesdays, not Five-0, it was a typo.

  • NJ Viewer

They better keep Vegas. That’s one of the few interesting and intelligent shows that’s on.

  • DW

you know CBS was ballsy 2 years ago moving TBBT to Thursday , why not move it to 9 PM on sunday. you think the good wife stinks in that slot. put a proven winner in that slot with another sitcom then if football runs over you can preempt the 930 so the 1000 can be off by 1100. hate to tell this to people but nothing is going to hit a 2.5 for CBS on sunday @9
