How to Live With Your parents for the Rest of Your Life

Tonight comedy How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest of Your Life) debuts on ABC. It's airing in what should be ABC's best time period, following its biggest hit Modern Family, which has admittedly been slipping in the ratings recently. But neither Happy Endings nor the seemingly very compatible Suburgatory flourished on Wednesdays at 9:30. Last week, Suburgatory earned a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating.

Premiering so late in the season rarely works out well for shows, though Scandal launched on ABC in April 2012 and grew into a hit. So how do you think the How To Live With Your Parents (For The Rest of Your Life) will fare? Make your predictions.

“Do Castle and Once Upon a Time not count? Anyway, I live in Canada, and I watch both of those shows on CTV, where I admittedly have not seen a single advert for this show.”

Since you’re in Canada, all bets on what you will and won’t see advertised during X show are off. I’m guessing CTV isn’t going to air it, so you’d be extremely unlikely to see ads for it during those other shows. Perhaps another Canadian net has picked it up, but you’d only really see ads for it on that network.

“Even if it is a hit (which it probably won’t be), I’m sure some ‘witty’ site-user will come up with the ‘genius’ phrase ‘How to FLOP With Your Parents.’”

I shall impersonate said ‘witty’ user:

Note that I am not actually one of those ‘witty’ users and hate when they do that.

Honestly it doesn’t sound that bad, but at this tIme in the year, people really don’t want to start watch new shows.

  • JSunkist

I have to wonder, ABC aired “8 Simple Rules (For Dating my Teenage Daughter) – so lets say this series does well enough for syndication, does ‘this’ series get shortened? It’d be too much for a TV guide or something, so perhaps it’s be “How to Live” :P

    2.1….chalke and garrett may help

It shows premiere to a 2.5-2.6 out of a 3.3-3.4 lead-in from Modern Family. If the quality is there, it should stay in the low 2’s the next week. If not, next week it will drop like a rock to a 1.5-1.6.

@psychic – Is CTV airing How to Live…? Because on ABC in the US, viewers have not been able to escape commercials for this show. Every episode of every ABC has had at least one ad for the past several weeks.

  • Cyrax86

I think it’ll premiere around 2.5 but I hope it flops so it won’t be any danger whatsoever to The Neighbors.

  • Mike Geary

Who makes a sitcom title that long? The show will be a bomb.

  • Dan S

I’m guessing 2.4-2.6 but if it truly stinks it’ll quickly drop. I’ll check it out but I don’t feel a strong vibe that this show will last.

  • Carmen

For the premiere, I’m guessing about 2.2 and will go steadily down from there.

I like Sarah Chalke and Elizabeth Perkins (somewhat), but I can’t stand Brad Garrett. I don’t find him funny, in fact, He comes across as obnoxious.

He cannot carry a show as a lead. And don’t bother saying the “Til Death” was a hit.

  • Tyler

I wish something unexpected would happen this season. When’s the last time a show premiered and absolutely dominated like nobody expected? Once Upon a Time is the only thing I can think of. It’d be cool if this show beat Modern Family just so there’d be something cool and unexpected.

  • RG-X

Looks funny – with the decline of IDOL it wil be a mild hit.

I think it will clear a 2.1 demo

  • Glue

I want it to flop only because I want the Neighbors and Malibu Country renewed :P

It has all the ingredients to be a successful sitcom (funny premise, great actors), plus the choice spot of being right behind Modern Family. Also, it’s good counter-programming: it’s up against Criminal Minds, SVU and Supernatural, so it has the comedy field to itself.

I hope it’s good and works out–I could use another funny show to watch. I like the concept and the actors, so it’ll depend on how good the writing is.

but I can’t stand Brad Garrett. I don’t find him funny, in fact, He comes across as obnoxious.

This is totally subjective of course. Brad Garrett was my favourite thing about Everybody Loves Raymond, the only non-obnoxious character in fact. He had a way of not only being funny but also grounding things.

Suburgatory got a 1.9 last week, and this new show will probably average a bit below that. For the first outing, however, there is the ‘new’ and ‘heavily promoted’ factor that might increase the ratings a bit so I’m saying a 2.1. Regardless, ABC will issue a press release tomorrow stating it’s a hit.

  • Butch Giondomenico

it has a chance to be a hit…The time slot might be too late at 9:30 pm est. I would have placed it at 8:30. I noticed the networks like ABC don’t promote their shows alot like they did in the 70s, 80s..

  • Kavyn

    I’m hoping it does well.

Inb4 “How to flop with your parents” or “Flop to flop with flop flops” lol.

  • Rockjock1037

I find it funny that people claim “no promotion”, as if they’re going to see ABC promos on other networks… All I get off my antenna is ABC and CW, so I can assure you ABC has been running promos for this show heavily for more than a month.

Too many people just don’t pay much attention to anything anymore…
