LOS ANGELES, April 4, 2013 – FX will post the most recent episode of The Americans (aired on Wednesday, April 3) on www.FXnetworks.com for encore online viewing due to an error by its publicity department (http://vod.fxnetworks.com/watch/theamericans/24079939847)

Last night’s ninth episode of The Americans, “Safe House,” aired from 10:00 to 11:07 PM ET/PT. The correct listings information was not properly disseminated to television listings services that provide information to media outlets, cable and satellite providers. As a result of the error, electronic guides which trigger the run times of DVRs incorrectly recorded the total running time of one hour (10:00-11:00 PM ET/PT), therefore cutting off the final seven minutes of the episode.

“The error is regrettable and I apologize to all the loyal fans of The Americans who were cheated out of the full viewing experience of one of the most important episodes so far this season,” said John Solberg, Senior Vice President of Media Relations, FX Networks. “Unfortunately mistakes happen and this happened to be a very unfortunate time for this kind of mistake. I hope the viewers whose DVRs failed to capture the final seven minutes of the episode will take advantage of the opportunity to watch the encore run on FXNetworks.com and see the spectacular ending.”

Episode 9 – “Safe House” (Aired April 3, 10:00 PM ET/PT) – Philip and Elizabeth are put to the test when a routine mission goes horribly wrong. Stan and the FBI are pushed to their limit when one of their own goes missing. Written by Joshua Brand; directed by Jim McKay.

Next week’s episode “Only You” (Episode 10) airs April 10, 10:00-11:03 PM ET/PT – Stan pursues a lead that puts him on the trail to one of Gregory's crew members, closing the gap between him and Elizabeth, and reigniting some of the deepest conflicts between her and Philip. Written by Bradford Winters; directed by Adam Arkin.

Will the full length version repeat on FX before the 10th, or just a version edited to fit a 60 minute slot?

  • rob60990

    This screams desperation.

  • Walt

@rob60990 And what do you call what you’re doing?

  • Jeff

This is not the first time this has happened. I’m on Cox cable and they rarely show an overrun in the schedule so I started adding 15 minutes to my recording a long time ago to make up for that.

  • Josh

Nice of them to own up to the mistake and do something meaningful to correct it.

  • TS

This might reflect a gross misunderstanding of how the ratings are calculated, but since Live + Same Day includes some DVR viewing, could this error have at least contributed to the drop in ratings this week?

  • Connman

I’m with Jeff. I happened to watch it last night shortly after it DVR’d, and realizing the error, I was able to setup the 1am show to tape the extra few minutes. I’ve just updated my DVR to add 15 minutes as well.

Nice of FX to step up and own their mistake and put something in place to rectify the situation – aside from their regular repeats of the current episode 2-3 times during the week before the next new episode.

  • AO

I’m very glad to see this.

  • PurpleDrazi

Man I was pissed when my DVR cut off! I’m glad FX is doing something about it.

  • Paul

@TS, 7 minutes is approximately 10% of the total length of the 67 minutes episode. This means that this could account for a drop of 10% in the ratings of the episode if all viewers were watching on their DVR and had only recorded until the scheduled end time of 11 PM.

Of course in reality many (most?) people still watch live and there are people like Jeff who add extra time to their scheduled recordings, so the actual drop would be less than 10% and probably even less than 5%. This means that the error only contributed to a small portion of the drop in ratings this week.

  • TS

@Paul – thanks! Though considering their Live+7 values regularly more than double the audience, it’s clear that a large portion of the audience actually doesn’t watch it live. So I still wonder if it will have a bigger effect than something like this would for shows with less DVR viewing. On the other hand, their DVR viewing numbers could be even higher this week if more people than usual watch the episode again to catch the ending.
