Bubble Watch: 'Vegas' Craps Out on Friday; 'Go On' Still on the Bubble + 'How To Live With Your Parents' and 'Hannibal'

Lucky Dice

When it comes to bubble status, like the Renew/Cancel Index we're focusing on the likelihood that a show will be renewed **for next season** (2013-14).  Certain shows are toss-ups where based on the ratings, the renewal decisions could go either way and not be surprising.

Here, “canceled” is used interchangeably with “won’t be renewed for next season” and is not meant to imply a show will be yanked off the schedule in the current season though obviously the two outcomes are not mutually exclusive. The semantics police and lawyers should feel free to break out the handcuffs and plead their cases in the comments.

This Isn't The Renew/Cancel Index

Though the basic methodology is the same (intra-network relative ranking of shows by adults 18-49 ),unlike the Renew/Cancel Index which predicts what would happen if the season ended now, Bubble Watch prognosticates about what will happen by May. The two are still usually closely aligned, and almost certainly very closely aligned towards the end of the season.

Vegas

The writing was etched fairly deeply into the wall when CBS announced Vegas was moving to Fridays. But like gamblers hoping to get on a hot streak and win back what they've lost, many fans held out hope that Vegas would get hot enough on Fridays to keep itself in the renewal discussion.  In TV ratings, as in gambling " 'hope' ain't nothin' but a four letter word."

Vegas came in third with adults 18-49 in the preliminary ratings for Friday, trailing both Shark Tank and Grimm by wide margins. That it came in ahead of Touch and had the most total viewers in the hour are no consolation, at least not in terms of Vegas' renewal prospects.

Go On & The New Normal

I'd hoped that the return of The Voice might clear things up a little bit with regard to Go On. There's a case to be made that it did, and that Go On should just be moved to "likely cancellation." I may do that yet, but for now it's still a bubble show. For a brief period it looked like a might have to instead upgrade The New Normal to the bubble since its preliminary ratings in the direct afterglow of The Voice were as good as Go On's. But The New Normal was adjusted down in the finals and it aired after a telecast of The Voice that performed four-tenths better with adults 18-49 than the one that led into Go On a week earlier.

How To Live With Your Parents & Hannibal

How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) got off to a good start after Modern Family on Wednesday and Hannibal had a so-so debut on Thursday. For now, I have them both on the bubble pending at least another week of data. It's not uncommon for shows to premiere well out of Modern Family only to quickly fade.

Someone asked me if I thought NBC would cut Hannibal some slack since NBC has had so many recent woes Thursdays at 10pm. Short answer: not if it falls to a 0.9 adults 18-49 rating. If it stabilizes at around a 1.2-1.3, I'll probably cut it a little bit more slack than I did for Deception on Mondays and at least keep it on the bubble.

Body Of Proof & Nashville

At least in theory those who said that I should have bumped Nashville down to the bubble and upgraded Body Of Proof to the bubble last week shouldn't have any problems that I still have Nashville as a renewal and Body Of Proof as a likely cancellation this week.  Let's see how it works out in practice!

BODY OF PROOF should be on the Bubble! NASHVILLE should be on the BUBBLE too! SAVE BODY OF PROOF!!!! :D :D :D

  • Esdru

    YAY FOR NIKITA!!!!!!!

  • kill00

The only bubble show that i will miss if it gets canceld is Community. Every show that is on likely/certain cancelation right now is pure crap :)

  • TV Addict

Community must live on to get six seasons and a movie!!!!!
No really, it must. There is NO other option.
    DO YOU HEAR ME!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
    #sixseasonsandamovieORTHEWORLDWILLEXPLODE!!!!!

Hannibal is tricky because it’s an international co-production that’s airing mostly in summer. I suspect different rules apply.

  • Melanie

    Cue outraged BATB fans in three . . two . . . one . . . .

I’m kind of thinking that both Nashville and BOP are bubble-worthy — I think ABC really WANTS Nashville to be a hit, but it just isn’t. BOP is kinda like a relief pitcher or a utility player that they can plug into the schedule when they need to – it doesn’t do great, but it supposedly doesn’t cost much either.

  • Carmen

I hadn’t watched but a few minutes of Vegas all season so I decided to give it a look on Friday.
To be truthful, I wasn’t particularly impressed. The only character I liked was the blonde lady who worked for the casino manager.

In addition – and I’ll probably draw some ire on this one -
I don’t know what it is exactly, but I just don’t care for the characters that Jason O’Mara plays. I don’t like the deputy he plays on Vegas and I couldn’t stand his role on Terra Nova.

  • Lena

Yeah looks like my “wait for the ratings to be strong before getting involved” strategy finally paid off!!! none of the shows I watch is in the likely cancellation category… normally it would be the other way around!
Now please ABC renew Nashville so I can finally see what all the positive reviews are about :)
The only show I’d miss right now is community… we still have 2 seasons and a movie to go!!!

  • Cyrax86

Deadline hints (in their item about pilots) that it’s possible that NBC does early renewals next week, with The Voice, Revolution & Grimm.

  • Anders

I want community to be renewed, or maybe picked up…

  • Jonay

Wouldn’t it be smart to just cancel Go On And The New Normal seeing as they can’t stand on their own two feet?????

  • pete5125

Got to have something for next season, but NBC may have to give up on Must See TV thur. lucky for them The Voice is still strong, May want to give America Got Talent to cover the break

  • CBSviewer

If CBS cancels CCSI: NY, Vegas and Golden it will only free 2 slots (Friday at 9 and Tuesday at 10). The third slot is Friday at 8 ?

  • rob60990

    The Neighbors still not downgraded…

  • diegodaily

    I think:

‘Go On’: Cancelled. Its ratings on Thursday were extremely low.
‘Hannibal’: We’ll se if the ratings go up on next thursday.
‘Rules of Engagement’: ‘Rules’ is pushing down ’2 Broke Girls’ with its ratings! Cancelled ipso facto.
‘How to Live with Your Parents…’: The premiere was the same as “Apartment 23″. ‘Modern Family’ 4,2 and ‘How to Live…’ 2,9. A year ago: ‘Modern Family’ 4,1 and ‘Apartment 23′ 2,9. We’ll see how it works in the summer episodes without ‘Modern Family’.

    Thanks.

i was chatting with a couple of people last night and they didnt know that Hannibal was on and they love that type of show. nbc needs to promote it more.

  • JD

Hannibal did pretty well for NBC, and a 1.6 for them is pretty great on a non-The Voice night. As well, it’s a co-production, and has found a lot of international buyers, so should be a profit even if the numbers sink much lower. Go On is absolutely pathetic without The Voice as a lead in. They should put Hannibal after the Voice instead of that crappy new reality show “Ready for Love”.

  • TSC’s Revenge

I’m not so sure that HOD is going to win out over BATB. I’m not a fan of either show, per se; however, there are several forces at play here. Pedowitz, in a recent interview, said that the network was trying to move toward more of a balance in the male vs. female oriented programming. Since TCD and HOD are mostly geared toward the female end of the spectrum, and if we take Pedowitz at his word (which I’m not so sure we can) that might give BATB the edge it needs to eke out another season…

  • Karen Pac

I can’t stand that Malibu Country is still on the bubble because I want to see it renewed! I know that this show has a great cast, great Friday ratings and its a show I can really enjoy with the whole family. We all like it. I think the writing has had some great moments and only gets better. ABC needs to have faith in this proven cast and renew it!

  • SJ

    @CBSviewer

Yep, Friday 8pm as Undercover Boss will likely be held back again. My guess is, they’ll premiere a new drama there just for the sake of premiering three dramas in the fall, but in reality, UB will be back in that time slot by November sweeps.

They won’t premiere two dramas on Fridays either, so I assume Hawaii 5-0 will be moving to Fri 9pm for what’s most likely going to be its final season.

ABC should cancel How to Live… so as to avoid another Apt.23 situation. And they really shouldn’t premiere any sitcoms mid-season.
