CBS' flurry of renewals appeared just before the Cancellation Bear locked down his "vacation week" poll post, and didn't have time to add much exposition.

The only real news in the CBS renewal announcement was the renewal of The Mentalist which the bear still had as a "toss up".

With the renewal of The Mentalist, CBS has signaled they're not going to be expanding their sitcom time next season (otherwise they'd not be able to premiere 3 new dramas as they have for the last seven seasons). That lack of new sitcom time means that Rules of Engagement could only return as a mid-season replacement unless CBS premieres no new sitcoms, which is inconceivable. While Rules was a mid-season replacement this season, the bear judges it to be unlikely to happen again, and have now moved the show's prediction to "likely to be canceled".

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    ProShip Viewer might be right about a new show airing on Saturday but not right at the beginning of the season but if a drama fails like Made in Jersey did this year CBS may ship it off to burn off remaining episodes besides that i see saturdays remaining CBS Crime Time Drama Repeats like they have in previous years which makes the most sense.

  • DeanW

    Why CBS did not burn-off the remaining episodes of Partners ? CBS keeps them for Summer ?
    They can air Partners’ remaining episodes and Friend Me back-to-back.

    @ProViewerShipNumbers

    My proposed CBS schedule is, without a doubt, the best one being offered on this website!

    The others are probably wrong in suggesting that you are high or have forgotten your meds. However, from the above sentence, the only conclusion I can make is that you are simply a pompous prat.

    I am not wounded by your insult, Nick! Nice try, but you failed!

    They have got to move The Mentalist to a better night a show that is that good should not be on a night where ratings just aren’t good, I want it to go on for awhile so they need to move it to Friday like Jonny C…. formerly Jon said.

  • Pavelsauce

    Sheesh ProViewer, you’re acting like you’re on some kind of crusade and we’re all out to get you. Get over yourself and your implausible pipe dreams. Guess The End was right after all, if you know what I mean! ;)

    @Nick
    I like your avatar choice :)

  • Jacob

    Am I the only one who doesn’t watch much on CBS. I mean nothing really interests me they don’t have many reality shows and they Have NCIS, NCIS:LA, CSI, CSI:NY and abunch of other crime shows that are all the same

  • Lawrence

    That would be too bad if CBS cancels Rules of Engagement as it is far and away their best comedy.

  • Dee

    My latest mock schedule cleaves a little closer to what I actually expect CBS’s fall slate to look like. I have given up any hope for a Friday miracle for my beloved “Vegas”. But, I retain my conviction that the network will go with a two-hour Thursday comedy block. I have them programming Saturday night, mainly because I believe they should, but also because they have the firepower to do it without crippling any other night in the process. And, it would be to their general benefit.

    This schedule is still not as conservative as some would insist it should be. There are some things in it that will raise a few eyebrows. That’s okay. This is just for fun. And, CBS isn’t listening to me anyway. I will try to explain my reasoning as we go along. Enjoy!

    SUNDAY –
    60 Minutes
    The Mentalist
    THE SURGEON GENERAL (w/ Sunday night vet Kathryn Morris)
    The Good Wife

    MONDAY -
    How I Met Your Mother
    2 Broke Girls
    MOM (I am assuming this is the strongest multi-cam comedy pilot)
    Molly (Poor Mike has died)
    LITTLE WHITE LIES* (Debra Messing)
    THE CRAZY ONES*
    *or, whichever single cam comedy pilots turn out the best. I know half-hour comedies in this slot is a stretch, but it’s a way for the network to dip its toe in the single cam comedy waters, and stranger things have happened.

    TUESDAY –
    NCIS
    INTELLIGENCE
    Person of Interest (A heavy-hitter to tackle a difficult timeslot)

    WEDNESDAY –
    NCIS: LA
    BEVERLY HILLS COP (Geographically compatible with its lead-in.)
    Criminal Minds

    THURSDAY-
    Big Bang Theory
    THE MATTHEW BRODERICK SHOW
    Two and a Half Men
    WHERE THERE’S A WILL (Will Arnett)
    Elementary

    FRIDAY -
    Hawaii Five-0
    CSI: Crime Scene Investigations
    Blue Bloods

    SATURDAY -
    The Amazing Race
    Survivor
    48 Hours Mysteries

    This lineup could lead to some fun programming stunts. For example, a Hawaii Five-0 / Blue Bloods crossover. Tom Selleck back on Oahu!

  • The End

    @Dee

    I can’t see NCIS/NCIS LA being split up and placed on different days, if only because they make up the CBS heavy hitting Tuesday schedule, which is doing quite well.

    Person of Interest performs on Thursday and likely won’t be moved either, and would be a much better lead in for Elementary should it remain on Thursday.

  • BretU20

    I think The Mentalist on Friday night would work considering that Blue Bloods does really good for a Friday show and Sunday just isn’t working for The Mentalist, Blue Bloods and The Mentalist are good so that could bring good ratings for a Friday Night.

    @disney rocks are you kidding Blue Bloods final season next year? They will only be on their 4th season and it’s the only one that has been consistent on Fridays.

  • The End

    @disney rocks

    To be honest that schedule is a bit of a mess.

  • TheFenchGuy

    @ disney rocks

    Next season will not be the last for Blue Bloods. It will be for The Good Wife or The Mentalist but Blue Bloods and Hawaii Five-0 will, at least, get a fifth season.

  • Tony JJ

    To the schedule that has MOM in midseason. No way would that happen. MOM is a shoo in for a fall time slot. It is their most anticipated comedy pilot and they are betting big on it being their next comedy smash.

  • Lola peters

    KEEP VEGAS!!!!

  • Petar Ivanov

    Moms will take Monday 8:30 slot after final season of HIMYM. Deadline report that. No other multi cams.(may be one for back up if Mom bomp but not expected) But at least 2 single cam expected for single cam hour on CBS.

    Ncis red not sure anymore as nobody likes it. Beverly hills cop will be new drama.

    My guess is that cbs will try ncis red on tuesday at 10 if can save it. But even cbs get it that is not good. Beverly hills cop will take PoI lead-out(doubt that cbs will move elementary) or Monday 10pm slot. An these single cams will be on wednesday at 8 or friday. Either way they will bomp and will has short live. May be TM on friday and survivor on sunday at 9. Good wife at 10. But is single cam hour bomp cbs will look bad.

  • Holly

    @Petar,

    Try not to take Deadline’s speculation seriously. Things change rapidly in the next month and NOTHING is settled.

  • Petar Ivanov

    @Holly

    I know you are right i remmember last year too. I guess a lot of PR and agents are in these deadline analysis/comments now. That is why i comment only about cbs where is not mess. I won’t comment on other networks until at least begining of may.
