CBS' flurry of renewals appeared just before the Cancellation Bear locked down his "vacation week" poll post, and didn't have time to add much exposition.

The only real news in the CBS renewal announcement was the renewal of The Mentalist which the bear still had as a "toss up".

With the renewal of The Mentalist, CBS has signaled they're not going to be expanding their sitcom time next season (otherwise they'd not be able to premiere 3 new dramas as they have for the last seven seasons). That lack of new sitcom time means that Rules of Engagement could only return as a mid-season replacement unless CBS premieres no new sitcoms, which is inconceivable. While Rules was a mid-season replacement this season, the bear judges it to be unlikely to happen again, and have now moved the show's prediction to "likely to be canceled".

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
-
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

  • The End

Reading that, I feel like I’m being trolled.

  • CBSviewer

    @ ProViewerShipNumbers

So you think next season will be the last for 4 shows ? NO it will be for HIMYM, one of The Mentalist or The Good Wife (maybe both) and maybe for 2.5 Men.

Half a Heart, White People and The Buddy System are not CBS pilots !

Then, your schedule is crazy if your goal is the kill CBS it’s perfect but if you want to increase the ratings you are wrong:
    - The Good Wife will die on Sunday or Friday and it will not get 29 episodes. At most it’ll get 22.
    - Vegas will be canceled.
    - The Amazing Race will stay on Sunday because it’s a solid performer and it is not mich expensive.
    - Same thing for Hawaii Five-0.

There is so much things to change ! I can’t list all !

  • The End

    @CBSviewer

I agree, his schedules suggest he either doesn’t interest the industry/ratings, or is trying to provoke a reaction from people. For example it’s not humanly possible to produce 29 episodes of Person of Interest in one season, it seems like he’s just assigning random numbers to shows, along with random days. So much wrong with his choices.

  • The End

    *interest

    Opps meant understand.

  • ProViewerShipNumbers

To all who have mocked my CBS 2013-2014 schedule:
    Where are your schedules?
Are your schedules significantly better than mine?
Do your schedules lean on the side of ratings increases?
If so, on which days will there be a ratings increase?
Which of your new shows will create “Desperate Housewives” season one like buzz?
What are your views on the current state of television?
What are your proposals on improving the current state of television?

…..or are you just a casual viewer who will watch –anything– on TV? They sure love you!

  • Mihai

When will How I Met Your Mother end? It’s starting to be really boring.

  • Jeff

@Mihai CBS already announced the next season of How I met your mother is the final season

  • Jeff

@Proship viewer its great to be ambitious but i think your schedule is too ambitious some of your pilots from previous seasons that u decided to place on your schedule are not in development this year and will not be picked up. There is a reason CBS didn’t pick up those pilots because they didnt like the direction the show would go or those pilots were bad. It is a huge risk to air that schedule. To start advertising all these shows would cost a huge chunk of money. Another issue you dont consider is what if your new shows that CBS previously passed on fail. Also with Saturday night I think market research in the pass has showed scripted programs on Saturday do not work. The most important Demo is 18-24 years old for all networks as the other demos are easier to grab so advertisers like to target the 18-24 Demo which go out on Saturday Night. I can not see advertisements selling for a premium saturday night. Historically Saturday nights get the lowest ratings and networks dont wanna waste valuable money. In the end of the day great effort for trying but I cant see CBS doing anything besides something SImilar to this.

    Sundays
8:00 The Amazing Race (Normal schedule run)
9:00 The Good Wife (13-22 episodes)
    10:00 H-5-0 (22 episode)

    Monday
8:00 How I Met Your Mother (final 24 episode seasons with 1 hour series finale)
8:30 Two and a Half Men (23 episodes and hopefully final season) or New Comedy (13-22) (not sure what will be placed there if its a new show I want Jacked there but I didn’t put it in there because I’m not convinced it will be picked up with so many comedies ordered.)
    9:00 2 Broke Girls (24 Episodes)
    9:30 Mike & Molly (22-24 Episodes)
    10:00 Anatomy of Violence (13-22)

    Tuesdays
    8:00 NCSI (22 episodes)
    9:00 NCSI LA (22 Episodes)
    10:00 NCSI (13-22 episodes)

    Wednesdays
    8:00 Survivor (Normal Run)
    9:00 Criminal Minds (22 Episodes)
    10:00 Hostage (13-22 Episodes)

    Thursdays
8:00 Big Bang Theory (24 Episodes)
8:30 Moms (13-24 Episodes and moms was placed here because it was created by the same creator as Big Bang Theory and might be the answer for a New Show in this block to succeed)
9:00 Person of Interest (22 Episodes)
    10:00 Elementary (22 Episodes)

    Fridays
    8:00 Undercover Boss or
9:00 The Mentalist (13 Episodes FINAL) CSI (18 Episodes)
    10:00 Blues Blood (22 Episodes)

I timed Shared the 9:00PM Friday Slot to put CSI In with the mentalist which would air winter after the mentalist wraps up their storyline.

    Saturdays
    8:00 Crimetime Saturdays
9:00 Crimetime Saturdays/Burn Off Failed Series
    10:00 Crime Time Saturdays

Crimetime Saturdays is the name for the rerun block it consists episodes of the mentalist, CSI, NCSI, NCSI LA, Criminal Minds (In the 8:00 and 9:00 hour unless there is a failed show to burn off at 9:00 the 10:00 Hour consists reruns of the 48 Hour news magazine.

I found it extremely difficult because CBS doesnt have much slots unless they pair Survivor and The Amzing race together and launch a single camera comedy block wednesday at 8:00 which I doubt

    Midseason
    Beverly Hills Cop
    Intelligence
    Jacked
    The Crazy One
    Bad Teacher
    Friends With Better Lives

Here are the midseason Pilots I would Pick Up I know CBS won’t pick up all but I can’t decide for comedy which 1 or 2 to pick up.

    8:00 – The Amazing Race
    9:00 – Hawaii Five-0 (22 episodes, Two-Hour Season Finale)
    10:00 – The Good Wife (20 episodes)

  • The End

    @CBSviewer

I would say this is 99 percent there. Barring any kind of late change around of established shows timeslots(Unlikely to happen), basically you’ve nailed it down. Kudos.

  • Bret Undersood

    @CBSviewer

Why on earth would The Mentalist be cut short? I don’t know why everyone hates on The Mentalist on this website, it’s a really good show.

  • CBSviewer

    @ Bret Undersood

I don’t hate The Mentalist and I watch it every week. But I think CBS will order a reduced number of episodes like they did with the CSI spin-offs last year. On the other hand, with less episodes CBS could premiere a new drama in March-April.

  • Angie

PLEASE PLEASE Leave Rules Of Engagement ON!! It is THE BEST comedy on right now!! If you’d give it a time slot and LEAVE IT THERE the ratings would go up!! My husband and I watch the reruns every night at 10 and laugh our ass off!! I think it’d be great if 2 1/2 men would go back to Monday nights folowed by Rules!!

  • Steve

Although Rules has been on for 7 seasons—it’s been in so many time slots and survived…..people will still watch it! Remember Partners CBS?

NBC canceled Harry’s Law last year and kept Smash…………………and has nothing now people will watch except The Voice. Smash is dead in the water and I’m really going to enjoy the cancellation bear eating Katharine McPhee.
