In what may be the only real disagreement this season between the Cancellation Bear's Renew/Cancel Index and Robert's Bubble Watch, the bear is once again moving his Beauty & The Beast prediction back to "likely to be renewed".

Three reasons why the bear's making the move. Beauty & The Beast ratings relative to other CW scripted shows continue to hold in the 90%+ range which is typically signals "likely to be renewed" (retentionistas may begin their howling now). As noted in previous weeks, the CW has never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule without at least six hours of "veteran" scripted shows, and canceling Beauty & The Beast would leave them with just five. Finally, Beauty & The Beast is the only 100% CBS produced show currently on the CW schedule that's able to be renewed (Hart Of Dixie is CBS&WB). Although he doesn't have historical records to back it up, bear guesses that joint venture quid pro quo is likely to carry at least a little decision making weight.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Whoop Whoop……
    Lets hope he’s right :)

  • Edain

Love the image of Patient Bear :)

And I have to admit, I hope you’re right about Beauty and the Beast. I understand the points made towards it’s cancellation, and I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but as a fan I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

  • halloween

So BatB will get renewed but doesn’t deserve to be. CW is embarrassing themselves renewing shows regularly getting .5-.6 in 1st season. May keep CBS happy but anger affiliates…have fun resigning those affiliates

  • elle#batb

GO BEAUTY & THE BEAST, I’M LIKING YOU BEAR… BEASTING OUT RIGHT NOW!!!!!!

  • adrian warhol

so is there no chance of the carrie diaries being renewed as i think its such a good show! give it a chance!

  • DenverDean

Well, Deadline reports that a 6-13 episode 4th season is being worked out for Nikita. 13 gives it 80 episodes.

  • halloween

should be noted that this season cw has many shows pulling .2-.5 in the demo…pulling down the network average as a whole…last season was bad too, but not this bad. So a .94 average for BatB is a little misleading. Do we think Batb goes anywhere besides Friday…i don’t think CW will launch a new show on Friday

  • WoWza

If carrie diaries is renewed Ill watch this summer

Every network has shows “pulling down the network average as a whole” (the fact that the CW overall average is so much lower is irrelevant), and yet the relative ratings prediction range I use has proved remarkably accurate.

    Nice Bear, Good Bear…….

Would bringing back Reaper count as one of the ‘six hours of “veteran” scripted shows‘? One can but dream can’t one?

I’m gonna be That Guy and point out that CW must really be hurting for Secret Circle and even Ringer’s numbers last season. So glad I’m 100% done with this network. Please, let the whole thing just burn!

  • Nerdbot

    Go Nikki!

  • Gio

BATB and TCD should be cancelled =(. Well, besides that, I think CW will pick 4 pilots (5 if you include The Originals, unofficially picked up already) out of eight available, so the network can manipulate its schedule without reruns.

My guesses: The Tomorrow People, The 100, Oxygen and The Selection, even though Reign is a possibility too.

“I’m gonna be That Guy and point out that CW must really be hurting for Secret Circle and even Ringer’s numbers last season. So glad I’m 100% done with this network.”

Apparently not “done” enough to not read the post and comment.

  • halloween

@Mal those probably would have been renewed this season…heck Emily Owens should have been renewed if they are thinking about TCD…maybe CW is learning to be more patient…but cw should go for clean slate if they want to be serous about their future

  • Holly

    @Mal,

I’m gonna be That Guy and point out that CW must really be hurting for Secret Circle and even Ringer’s numbers last season.

Why would they be? TSC ended with around/just below what BatB is getting and Ringer ended a tenth above TCD. So…they basically have the same numbers those shows got last season.

  • Jared

If BATB is produced in house with CBS Studios why wouldn’t they bring it back for a second season? BATB is a show that started slow but became consistently better story wise and ratings started to grow and stabilize once the procedural was dropped. Now the heart of the series is focused more towards the relationship between Vincent and Cat and the shows never been better. I hope more viewers find this series on hulu/netflix and give it a chance.

  • JacobYates

    @Jared
The ratings stabilized, I’ll give you that. But the ratings have not risen.
