Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 7, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult (some F) (canceled 4/10) 0.34
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.58
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.95

In what may be the only real disagreement this season between the cancellation bear's Renew/Cancel Index and Robert's Bubble Watch, the bear is once again moving his Beauty & The Beast prediction back to "likely to be renewed".

Three reasons why the bear's making the move. Beauty & The Beast ratings relative to other CW scripted shows continue to hold in the 90%+ range which is typically signals "likely to be renewed" (Retentionistas may begin their howling now). As noted in previous weeks, the CW has never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule without at least six hours of "veteran" scripted shows, and canceling Beauty & The Beast would leave them with just five. Finally, Beauty & The Beast is the only 100% CBS produced show currently on the CW schedule that's able to be renewed (Hart Of Dixie is CBS&WB). Although he doesn't have historical records to back it up, bear guesses that joint venture quid pro quo is likely to carry at least a little decision making weight.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Yeah the majority of the pilots sound ok. The only one I wouldn’t 100% like to see The Selection out of the 5, so maybe Reign. The other two sound like bore fests and sadly Reign doesn’t sound like its on the right network considering its premise.

  • Adrian

It’s actually Reign, the one with the highly sexual pilot, not The Selection.
The Selection is supposed to be Bachelor+Hunger Games.

  • Brandy

The Orginals,Selection,Reign interest me but that fact The Selection & Reign film out of the country and not in Canda makes me think they might be too exspensive.Theyll probably only have 13 a season if picked up.
@JjA, why do you say that?CWs target audience is over 18 year olds and it’s median viewer age is in the 40s I read a little while back.Pedowitz wants older viewers in addition to the 34 & younger cw attracts/targets.Plus, this is the network that had brutal torture scenes and a amputation on Nikita,a threesome on GG and SPN has quite a bit of violence/gore.

  • starship

Actually it was Pedowitz who really wanted the adult overhaul and to turn it into the broadcast’s Game of Thrones. So I’m sure he’s quite happy with those results.

Anyway, I’m sure the sex and raunchiness will still be PG-13, i.e. no nudity so they’ll be fine, as for cynicism as long as it’s at 9, they can get away with a lot, 2 Broke Girls is living proof of that(and last year it even aired at 8.30, so The Selection would probably be ok even in the 8pm time slot). That’s the pilot I’m most looking forward to and really hope they pick it to series, after they threw away the whole Bachelor premise and added new characters, it sounds way more exciting + I heard the visuals were great (it’s shot in Hungary after all).

  • Adrian

Nevermind I just read the article.
Anyway I doubt this is anything more than a PR stunt. This isn’t HBO, it’s the CW so I wouldn’t make much of it. The thing here is, it seems Pedowitz really, and I mean, REALLY wants the Selection to succeed. He is certainly putting the effort.

don’t fool yourself, we didn’t see the amputation on Nikita and that “threesome” was a joke, it just showed three people lying on the bed with most clothes on. Though I agree, SPN is more gory and violent than all the others but nothing too extreme.

here to say love batb and love patient bear. hes sooo cute!

When have I emphasized my importance in any way? I only, in my unimportant way, have done my best to get Beauty and the Male Model cancelled. It is an abomination. Rename it Beauty and the Hulk and I’ll dismiss my objections. I only feel this way about this show (Oh, my God; he has a little scar on his pretty little face; Get the pitchforks!!! Get the critics!! No, don’t get the critics.) and one other television program. Otherwise, I don’t care what is on; no one forces me to watch it. The other show, Scandal, is an abomination, the popularity of which will lead us into a Totalitarian government. The protagonist is someone who takes money to hide things from the free press. And this show gets good ratings. You’all like this. I lived through Watergate, but if Olivia Pope were on the job, we’d be toasting King Richard. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Tvbtn should give hod the green smileys next week :-)

  • feinn

I think batb somehow gets renewed…though tsc had a .99 in index when canceled at end of season…but other unknown factors may have contributed to its demise…but if tcd gets renewed they are idiots

Haha #beasties win. TBH I think there was alot of negative bias from TVBTN writers here except for BG. I also think that just because TVD has good numbers doesn’t mean that it is a good lead-in show. Look how many shows from different genres failed in this spot and when you count everything together BATB isn’t that bad at all. It certainly has the most passionate fans. :-)

  • AA

It needs to go in the way of secret circle.

its not going to survive seadon 2.

  • The End

I haven’t commented on the CW area all season, mostly as only Arrow interests me on it. But do think Beauty and the Beast will be renewed, it’s in no danger of cancelation.

  • Jeff

so cults now officially dead CW pulled the remaining episodes and placed encores there

  • James

THE 100!!! Please pick it up!!

  • mich

BATB is the best thing in my life right now and I don’t know what I’d do without it.

  • Chibgchong

    Hope it doesn’t affect Nikita

  • Melanie

Deadline’s latest ‘pilot panic buzz’ has the Tomorrow People coming on strong in the hunt for a pick-up. That and the Originals are the two that most interest me.

  • tobes

just curious since Vampire Diaries will have its 88+ episodes at the end of the season does anyone know if its been sold into syndication? and where if so
