Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 7, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult (some F) (canceled 4/10) 0.34
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.58
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.95

In what may be the only real disagreement this season between the cancellation bear's Renew/Cancel Index and Robert's Bubble Watch, the bear is once again moving his Beauty & The Beast prediction back to "likely to be renewed".

Three reasons why the bear's making the move. Beauty & The Beast ratings relative to other CW scripted shows continue to hold in the 90%+ range which is typically signals "likely to be renewed" (Retentionistas may begin their howling now). As noted in previous weeks, the CW has never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule without at least six hours of "veteran" scripted shows, and canceling Beauty & The Beast would leave them with just five. Finally, Beauty & The Beast is the only 100% CBS produced show currently on the CW schedule that's able to be renewed (Hart Of Dixie is CBS&WB). Although he doesn't have historical records to back it up, bear guesses that joint venture quid pro quo is likely to carry at least a little decision making weight.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The Carrie Diaries ratings are not that well, but the CW has kept low rating shows in the past, and i’m sure they will in the future. TCD is actually a good show, and the finale was great! Hoping for a renewal, with one more season to prove itself.

  • Dusti T

Bryer was right. TCD is the best show ever! love it boo. sha nay nay

  • halloween

@Holly the network cares about the whole season…last season those shows did much better in the beginning than most this season…of course when it comes to renewal its how you doing now

I think cw would rather have shows start strong then slow decline than simply be DOA within a couple weeks

Would affiliates rather have months of decent ratings and then a couple months of modest ratings rather than modest ratings from the beginning

“If BATB is produced in house with CBS Studios why wouldn’t they bring it back for a second season?”

All in season CW scripted shows are produced “in house”. Either by CBS or Warner Brothers, the 50/50 owners of the CW.

The unique thing about BATB is that it’s the *only* CBS produced show still able to be renewed.

  • Hanna

According to Dealine, Nikita will get a 10-13 episode final season,BATB and Carrie Diarieswill be renewed along with HoD.Nikita can still be syndicated with 79-81 episodes, like Til Death had 81, Community will have 79 unless it miraculous ly gets renewed, Reaper has 31 and will be syndicated on Fearnet,Veronica Mars had64 episodes and is syndicated on SoapNet.
I’m really hoping Dealines right about HoD,CD, HoD as I love them all and would be happy if they’re all renewed.

  • Ashley

    Mr. Bill Gorman

I know that Cult is doomed to be canceled but can you put the (F) by it. It does air on Fridays now and it would at least make me feel alittle better about its ratings. :(

  • Janet Snakehole 3

This is great news. BATB became better and better as season progressed. The story is getting more complicated and interesting. Chemistry between Jake Ryan and Kristen K is sizzling. It needs a second season and more promotion.

  • Brandy

@Norma. Hell deny it til Mark Pedowitz announces it in My.Mark will be making the announcement ,not Craig.Lets just wait and see in May,

  • bloureno

Thank you thank you thank you Bear for starting to change your mind about #BATB

  • Bill Gorman

“I know that Cult is doomed to be canceled but can you put the (F) by it. It does air on Fridays now and it would at least make me feel alittle better about its ratings.”

Clerical error for the doomed now corrected.

  • Angela

Yaaay, BatB is the best show ever, it has to be second season. I am in love with VinCat.

  • Melanie

Deadline’s speculating that the CW’s streaming deal may ‘save’ TCD. Maybe they should just do the show as webisodes or something if it really does so well online, because it sure isn’t doing that great in the real ratings world.
I can’t imagine that they’ll keep it rather than go with a pilot — something that has the possibility of doing better than a .4. Unless the pilots all completely suck to the point they know they’re bombs, I guess.

  • Victoria_BATB

Oh Dear! So anxious about BATB! LET IT BE RENEWED! LET IT BE RENEWED! LET IT BE RENEWED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Charmed

The pilots don’t sound so great this year, they all sound the same. I can only see The Originals and The Selection as sure things, and maybe The 100. I really hope what Deadline is reporting is true! I think everyone who watched TCD last night agrees with me that we need another season!

  • charmedcraft

    Happy for BATB.

For the person that showed Nikita being moved to Tuesday right before SPN, LMFAO!

  • Mal

@Bill, touché! But that’s because I still love the network ratings game as a whole.

Also, I am a shameless hater.

  • Jane Elliot

The Beasties enthusiasm is making me smile. I’m glad the bear is voting your way. (Also, I really want to know where that bear picture in the poster came from.)

  • omabin

I think the poltical argument is actually the strongest argument in favour of renewing Beauty. I still say cancel it and save the money to promote 4 new shows. I would go with:

    The Tomorrow People
    The Hundred

    The Selection
    Hart of Dixie

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals

    Reality Show/ Repeats

  • Beauty&theFlop

Only a network that wanted to die would renew a collosal flop like B&TB.
