Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 7, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult (some F) (canceled 4/10) 0.34
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.58
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.95

In what may be the only real disagreement this season between the cancellation bear's Renew/Cancel Index and Robert's Bubble Watch, the bear is once again moving his Beauty & The Beast prediction back to "likely to be renewed".

Three reasons why the bear's making the move. Beauty & The Beast ratings relative to other CW scripted shows continue to hold in the 90%+ range which is typically signals "likely to be renewed" (Retentionistas may begin their howling now). As noted in previous weeks, the CW has never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule without at least six hours of "veteran" scripted shows, and canceling Beauty & The Beast would leave them with just five. Finally, Beauty & The Beast is the only 100% CBS produced show currently on the CW schedule that's able to be renewed (Hart Of Dixie is CBS&WB). Although he doesn't have historical records to back it up, bear guesses that joint venture quid pro quo is likely to carry at least a little decision making weight.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I actually think the Deadline article could be on to something. Renewing all the shows (well the bubble ones at least) doesn’t mean they would all air in the fall. If Nikita does get a short run, that opens a spot in the spring, plus the spot that ANTM will leave, not to mention if any new or returning show bombs. That leaves 2-3 possible spots in the spring for another new show or two + maybe The Carrie Diaries or Beauty and the Beast.

Not calling it an absolute or anything, but I definitely think the possibility is there and I won’t be shocked at all if they do renew everything (not counting Cult of course).

I think 6 is way too short(for me at least) but I’d settle for 13. As long as we get closure.

I agree with Carrie being cancelled! I mean why the bleep would the network renew it when its pulling such embarrassing numbers!

  • Claudia

@Bear Im loving you today @Bill I love you more… not talking only as a BATB fan but finally you came to senses that if you see at #BATB ratings only and compare them with the other bubble / low rated shows in the network it was by far the most likely to be renewed. Let alone the quality, syndication, retention, and all the other theories people come to argue in here about.

    Bear is making sense now!

  • Bizarro

This year I wouldn’t mind if Deadline is right about Nikita getting a 6-13 ep season next year to wrap things up and satisfy the fans, HOD and B&TB getting a full season, and TCD being cancelled with the possibility of having webisodes to keep the fans happy. But with the CW picking up at least 5 to 6 pilots (reality not included). I see TCD just being cancelled and thats it because the CW still has to pay for it. Cult is airing in more countries than TCD is, what a shocker!

  • Bizarro

Last year the CW said that they were going to give Gossip Girl a final season of 6 to 13 eps after they announced its renewal.

  • Tonya

This 2012-13 version of BATB has great actors, writers, story direction & intrigue in the retelling of this 256 year old fairytale. The story seems so current, with its intrigue & mystery but it is the chemistry between the Beauty and the Beast that draw us in…the humor of friendships, the raw urban NYC setting that colors the dangers…this tale is as good as the one told in the 80s and likely will be another cult favorite…It deserves a second season, a third & fourth to give the actors & writers a chance to expand on their excellence…The Fan base is growing with a fierceness and we are a VERY LOYAL group, intelligent and appreciative…We are fighting daily thru social media, letters, polls, and more for our 2nd season…It seems a no-brainer to us — The powers that be must know, only a great show can inspire such a PASSIONATE FANDOM…we are loyal, we are here to STAY !! <3

  • halloween

@Tonya how come the tv ratings for BatB are awful? Why has the show lost over half its audience since it premiered ? Theories?

  • Batb4ever

I’m in a happy mood today. Cause there’s only 10 days left 4 a new episode of #BATB. this is my favorite show and I think I has made a great turn 4 the better since it started. I can understand why some people dind’t like it from the beginning, but boy do you miss out now. So get in the game and start watching #BATB on CW 8/9

  • BATB Chile

YES! People who stopped watching by the 3-4 episode should start watching it again. Last 5 episode are gonna be SICK!! And not to mention that since ep 15 things started to move faster ;)

  • Twittoletta

Yeah ta ta ta taaaa … the first good news in long time …. Beauty and the Beast <3 :)

  • susie

Interesting, I can see TCD being carried to the web successfully. As for BATB and HOD being renewed for full seasons. As for Nikita…the series with Peta Wilson was far better then this remake, so a shortened season of 13 to give their wonderful fans some closure. Now to Cult, really sad about this show because I truly wanted to like it but the storyline didn’t catch me even though the actors are pretty damn good individually.

  • Claudia

Halloween, we already know you dont like BATB….why would you be in a thread where people are commenting about the show Likely to be renewed such a waste of time in my books!

  • halloween

@Claudia I’m trying to crack the mystery why the show gets better but ratings fall…seems like the ratings should go up

  • networkman

Nikita should get a full season 22 episode order. It does good for CW on a Friday night. In the fall it should consistenly garner a .4 or .5 in the demo and pull in over a million viewers. That is one less timeslot the network has to worry about. Nikita has a loyal fanbase and let’s not forget the international appeal. I would actually renew Beauty & The Beast and put that on Friday @9pm. I would like to see if it would be able to retain Nikita’s ratings. If it doesn’t work then the CW can place a reality/game show in its spot. But for the Fall, I feel the network should only concern itself with promoting 3 new shows.

    8pm Hart of Dixie
    9pm The Carrie Diaries

    8pm *Oxygen
    9pm Supernatural (Final Season)

    8pm Arrow
    9pm *The Selection

    8pm The Vampire Diaries
    9pm *The Originals

    8pm Nikita
    9pm Beauty & The Beast

  • bonnie carnell

beauty and the beast is a GREAT show and should be renewed

  • Franamado

I wish the ratings system was as accurate as we think. If educated ourselves as to how this system really works we would understand that they are far from being so. It does not take into account social media impact, viewing on other media, international audience, and purchases/downloads of shows. Unfortunately this is all there is available at the moment. The Nielsen ratings has recognized these short comings in some recent articles and has proposed some new data gathering methods but none have been implemented to far. So fans remember that the fate of your show is being determined by a very small sample size of households that have these boxes or handwritten diaries (really?). In an age where we we can get news from the most obscure parts of the world in minutes or computers that can crunch data in milliseconds to bring you the latest tech gadget, TV execs are making decisions using archaic boxes and handwritten notes about what I watched last night. This is like performing surgery with a packet knife and chloroform.

  • Holly

If you took time to educate yourself as to the purpose of the ratings system, you would have absolutely no trouble understanding why social media, viewing on other media, international audience, and purchases/downloads are not included.

  • JQ

You keep saying “It wouldn’t make sense…” but why? If Nikita can get a syndication deal with 80 episodes, why wouldn’t 13 episodes make sense? It would be far from the first show to not hit 88 but still get syndicated.

And TCD is no doubt low in the ratings, but it’s apparently very strong on places like Hulu. If it makes money, it doesn’t really matter where it comes from. If TCD is just as profitable overall as the other bubble shows, that’s all that really matters. Now I don’t know those exact figures, but you don’t either. So it if is as profitable, again why wouldn’t it make sense to bring it back?

    @ Halloween

If you are referring to the last episode that aired on 03/28/13, BATB was pre-emptied that night along with a few others. Second, it was a holiday weekend as well. During the months of January-February, BATB did not have the best arc at the time, which caused the ratings to lessen. However, once that arc ended, the demo has risen as well as stabilized and the ratings began increasing also. Further, now that the series is moving away from the procedural element of the show, the storylines have greatly improved, and based on recent spoilers, the last five episodes will definitely be one hell of a rollercoaster for the Beasties, and potentially new viewers.
