Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 7, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult (some F) (canceled 4/10) 0.34
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.58
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.95

In what may be the only real disagreement this season between the cancellation bear's Renew/Cancel Index and Robert's Bubble Watch, the bear is once again moving his Beauty & The Beast prediction back to "likely to be renewed".

Three reasons why the bear's making the move. Beauty & The Beast ratings relative to other CW scripted shows continue to hold in the 90%+ range which is typically signals "likely to be renewed" (Retentionistas may begin their howling now). As noted in previous weeks, the CW has never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule without at least six hours of "veteran" scripted shows, and canceling Beauty & The Beast would leave them with just five. Finally, Beauty & The Beast is the only 100% CBS produced show currently on the CW schedule that's able to be renewed (Hart Of Dixie is CBS&WB). Although he doesn't have historical records to back it up, bear guesses that joint venture quid pro quo is likely to carry at least a little decision making weight.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Jane,@Kavyn, what you two dont understand is shows have been syndicated with less than 88 episodes, so if CW can syndicate it with less they will.Flashpoint had 79,Til Death 81,Leverage 77,The Unit 69,Veronica Mars 64,yet all were syndicated.Reaper with 31 episodes just got syndicated on Fearnet. Even a couple freshman shows have been syndicated: Nashville on CMT,Arrow on WGNAmer,Secret Circle on Chiller.
Nikitas not doing good ratings wise and a short season would avoid hiatuses and DST rsting drop.Pedowitz has also mentioned trying cable length seasons, like with Cult and CD this season.Pedowitz believes in giving vetran shows closure and even short season would do that.If he can get it syndicated with fewer than 88, why wouldnt he instead of keeping it on and watching it go possible 0.1_0.0_0.2 by series end? Also, I believe Nikita having a short season and if CD/,BATB are renewed, that would allow to keep some old shows while premireing new ones and cut down on repeats and not have holes in the schedule like this season where hes suppossed to program 10 hours a week but is only programming 9.Rumors are Pedowitz has been told yo clean house.HZe would still syndicate it and wrap it up nice for fans but afterwards put a,new show that will hopefully get better ratings in hope of saving the network.IF CD makes money, it makes money.Pedowitz and Ostroff both knew the importance of ondemand, online, netflix, dvr ect and used that information to help which shows to renew and cancel.

  • Charmed

If TCD makes money, I don’t think it matters where it comes from.

  • Charmed

Ratings aren’t the be all and end all when it comes to renewals.

  • Dave

You do realize that you’re contradicting yourself right?

First off, how do you know that Mr. Pedowitz has been told to clean house? Do you work at The CW?

Second, if that nonsense of a statement is true, then why the hell is Beauty and Carrie supposedly getting saved? If he was told to clean house, then those two colossal failing freshman dramas should be on their way out along with the already cancelled GG, 90210, Owens and Cult. Only Nikita and Dixie would return. Do yourself a favor and read what Bill has written in the beginning if the index. The CW HAS NEVER started a season with less than SIX RETURNING VETERAN DRAMAS.

And another thing, there are a lot of factors here as to why Nikita is “supposedly” getting a short season. But it’s all speculation because nothing is official. We know that shows have been syndicated with less than 88 episodes.

God you’re like the female version of Bondoel. It’s like you had the same phrases/paragraphs saved so all you do is copy and paste(which by the way you really need to work on).

Have you ever heard of a space bar?

  • Alicia

I’m so happy! I would be heartsick if they cancelled BATB. It is the best show on tv. This whole cast is amazing. I just love JR and KK together as Vincent and Catherine. They really have a chemisty together unlike any I have seen. This show deserves a 2nd, 3rd, and many more seasons. Thank you for this article. It really made my day!

  • Kavyn

We have no idea if Nikita already has syndication deals in place, so it’s too soon to say whether or not the show needs its 88 episodes or not. I’m under the impression that they’re preparing Nikita for syndication, which indicates they need their 88 episodes – unless of course if they already have all of their deals set (which we have’t heard of). I’m sure if Nikita were given syndication we would have heard of it, just like we heard about Comedy Central’s deal with Community.

BATB and Carrie are not in the same position syndication wise. The CW may very well renew them for 6 episodes each to “conclude the story,” but I don’t see why they’d bother. They could just as easily have told the writers to finish the story within their respective episode orders and not needed to renew them.

Nikita’s pretty much getting the same ratings it was getting last year, so I doubt it’ll drop to 0.1-0.2 ratings next year. And even if it did – who cares, Nikita clearly isn’t getting renewed because of its ratings. HOD will be in a similar situation next season, and it is very likely to drop to Nikita levels if moved to Friday (and again, it wouldn’t matter because it would still get a fourth season).

@Dave The CW broke a record last year by bringing in 5 pilots for the new season, so whose to say they don’t break another record and renew only 5 shows (TVD, SPN, Arrow, Nikita and HOD) instead of 6? I do however think a BATB renewal is possible for Friday at 9 (which I’ve already said countless times – I apologize for repeating myself over and over again), but I highly doubt TCD will get its renewal unless if it turned into an online or Summer series.

Although it’s true that new shows are expensive, that doesn’t justify renewing a low rated show like TCD after one season just to make profit. It’s better to just air a new show than renewing a low-rated one. I want to make the same argument with BATB, but I can’t because the CW would be idiots to put a new show on a Friday at this point in time.

The other way I can see TCD getting the renewal over BATB is if they move HOD to Fridays instead, that way TCD/ANTM can pair up with HOD which would work nicely. Moving Nikita to Tuesday’s death slot (9pm) and putting a new show at 8pm. If they kept Arrow and SPN together, then they can completely reinvent Mondays by putting two new shows there, which might actually work better (it could be worth the risk). Otherwise, I would leave Arrow at Wed@8pm and move SPN to Mon@9pm and find new shows that pair well with them.

  • The other Brandy

I dont see Nikita getting a full season. But I have a crappy feeling HOD and B&B wont get one either.

  • solelle

What would happen if CW gave several of the struggling shows short seasons , i mean less than 22 eps. would that fix the time slot issue say a la hbo. ya know the way they run one show on sunday at nine then another and another for most of the year.

  • Dave

Something tells me(based in that very same deadline article) that the network and studio wants Craig to stick around but the guy has other obligations to his new series.

In my opinion(based on me loving the show), I could easily see one of the many talented writers taking over if a deal can’t be made. I understand ratings are bad for the show but its not like the other bubble shows are doing that much better. I feel like if the show should make its bow next season, it should be a full one. I also believe that ratings over the next few weeks could also make their decisions easier for Nikita’s 4th season order as well as BATB renewal/cancellation.

Carrie should be cancelled. There should be no ifs/but about it!

The CW used to be my favorite network but the only shows I enjoy on are NIKITA and Vampire Diaries. When Nikita ends next season, all I’ll have TVD and The Originals.

  • Win

If deadline is even remotely right I say both batb and TCD end up on Friday. Nikita at 7 and batb at 8. The. When Nikita ended its run, batb bumps up and TCD takes the 8 slot. Assuming this was true. But it’s not.

  • HV

I could switch The Selection and Beauty and the Beast, but my Monday and Tuesday are not changing. Well, actually I am planning on switching The Hundred and The Tomorow People. The two shows I put in 8:00 slots are there because they are returning shows, so they are before new shows, a common strategy.

  • Amanda

Why can’t TheCW give both TCD and BATB 13 episodes, if one of their new pilots fail, throw either one of the two in the slot of the series that failed. At least that way they know they’ll have an already built in viewership with those series.

  • Renee

Bill I sincerely hope you’re right about BATB. I’m tired of investing in shows that get cancelled at the end of season 1. A second season would be nice.

  • Nick

What the CW should do for 2013-2014:

    8: America’s Next Top Model/The Selection (new)
    9: Hart of Dixie

    8: The Hundred (new)
    9: Supernatural

    8: Arrow
    9: The Tomorrow People (new)

    8: The Vampire Diaries
    9: The Originals (new)

    8: Nikita (full final season)
    9: Repeats

  • Richard Steven Hack

Bill: “Three reasons why the bear’s making the move. Beauty & The Beast ratings relative to other CW scripted shows continue to hold in the 90%+ range which is typically signals “likely to be renewed” (retentionistas may begin their howling now).”

I’m not a retentionista per se, but the point of BATB is that it was put where it was to “fix” Thursday night’s retention problem with TVD. It didn’t work, just like TSC – which did much better ratings – didn’t work. So we know The Originals is going to fix the problem next season. That puts BATB on another night where it is likely to do a season average of, at best, .5.

So why renew it when you know it’s going to fail next season?

    Your reason:

“As noted in previous weeks, the CW has never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule without at least six hours of “veteran” scripted shows, and canceling Beauty & The Beast would leave them with just five.”

Yet the CW has canceled up to 85% of its new shows in the past and canceling BATB along with EO, Cult and TCD would only be 80% of this season’s new shows. Calling BATB a “veteran” show is just window-dressing. It’s a first season show that’s barely clinging to life. The ONLY reason it’s at 90% of the network average is because the network average has collapsed onto life support. That’s hardly a good reason.

“Finally, Beauty & The Beast is the only 100% CBS produced show currently on the CW schedule that’s able to be renewed (Hart Of Dixie is CBS&WB). Although he doesn’t have historical records to back it up, bear guesses that joint venture quid pro quo is likely to carry at least a little decision making weight.”

Yes, and the joint venture wants to make a profit. I think that comes ahead of any CBS Studios egoboo at having their last crap being canceled. They should be happy the show is quietly dumped – or at least as quietly as the fanatical BATB fans will allow. :-)

Compare your reasons to the simple fact that the show has no place to go on the CW schedule for next season, and ANYWHERE it goes it’s going to do worse than Nikita is doing on Friday in its third season.

I can’t see your “infrastructure” reasons outweighing the simple loss of ratings and revenue in season two.

Sure, it’s POSSIBLE that international RATINGS paced international SALES this season and thus the international buyers will finance the show next season. But I doubt it. More likely international ratings paced US ratings and the show’s international license fee will take a dive for season two.

Then there’s the claim people make that the CW can’t afford to produce enough new shows to replace those canceled this season, or promote them properly. This is speculative, too. I say they can and will.

If the CW renews BATB, it will be a huge mistake for them.

    Death to BATB! :-)

  • Richard Steven Hack

Amanda: TCD is DEAD. D-E-D Dead. Gone. Over. Fergeddaboudit.

There is NO WAY – NO WAY – the CW renews a show doing a .4 season average in its first season. Not for 13 episodes or any other number.

The other Brandy: “I dont see Nikita getting a full season.”

Ridiculous. They need 22 more episodes (actually 21 since season two was 23 episodes) to get to 88. They’re not going to stretch Nikita out over two more seasons with shortened seasons. That’s nonsense.

The CW Renew/Cancel post produces some of the most ridiculous comments of any network. Some of them are hallucinatory.

  • bonnie carnell

Beauty and the Beast is the best show on the C.W. by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Melinda

I don’t understand how an amazing show like BATB ended up on “bubble watch”. I get more addicted to this show with every episode! If it doesn’t get a second season, I am going to be seriously dissapointed in the CW.

  • Kavyn

@RSH In Brandy’s defence, she’s referring to the Deadline article stating that Nikita might get a 6-13 episode order since Craig is focusing on another show. However, it stills sounds like BS to me, because they can easily switch show runners, plus they need the 88 episodes.

  • Tonya

@Brandy…did the CW release their schedule? How do you know what will air at what time…maybe 8p is a better time slot for BATB…the shows that got the early renewal have 8p slots and not on Friday nights… I wonder if ratings for the top CW show would survive a Friday night schedule…isn’t that night the Kiss of Death for a series?? I’m no expert but wonder. BATB deserves renewal because it is well written & directed…the actors are fantastic and the show deserved it’s 2013 People’s Choice Award!! RENEW!!
