Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 7, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult (some F) (canceled 4/10) 0.34
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.61
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries   0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.91
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.49
Arrow renewed 1.58
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.95

In what may be the only real disagreement this season between the cancellation bear's Renew/Cancel Index and Robert's Bubble Watch, the bear is once again moving his Beauty & The Beast prediction back to "likely to be renewed".

Three reasons why the bear's making the move. Beauty & The Beast ratings relative to other CW scripted shows continue to hold in the 90%+ range which is typically signals "likely to be renewed" (Retentionistas may begin their howling now). As noted in previous weeks, the CW has never begun a 10 hour Fall schedule without at least six hours of "veteran" scripted shows, and canceling Beauty & The Beast would leave them with just five. Finally, Beauty & The Beast is the only 100% CBS produced show currently on the CW schedule that's able to be renewed (Hart Of Dixie is CBS&WB). Although he doesn't have historical records to back it up, bear guesses that joint venture quid pro quo is likely to carry at least a little decision making weight.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I think the difference in quality between the pilot episode and the last two episodes of Beauty and the Beast is astounding. I like Kristin Kreuk, but the first few episodes were literally painful. The procedural aspects were so badly written, the female characters were terribly childish… but there seems to have been a massive lift in quality in recent times. I hope there’s a second season.

Its still not convincing enough to me to warrant BATB another season. Somehow I still think it will be cancelled over Carrie Diaries. They would have to move BATB to another night and have confidence that it will do well on it’s own. I still don’t believe BATB will do well on its own or if CW would even want to put up with it for another 3 seasons. (Because if it gets a full second season it will get full third and fourth seasons)

  • Dan

I think the short final Nikita season is nonsense. If a show has 66-68 episodes culminating a third season then it will definitely get a full fourth season and CW has nothing else to put on Fridays so a full fourth Nikita season is good to go.

  • Dave

“(Because if it gets a full second season it will get full third and fourth seasons)”

I don’t think the network will want another Nikita and Hart of Dixie situation. What I do think is BATB will fall apart in Season 2 when moved away from TVD. That for sure will be enough incentive to not keep it around.

Anyway, TSC dropped like a stone during the last 5 episodes which resulted in cancellation. BATB has 5 more episodes left to air so the jury is still out.

Oh and I’m not a SC fan so save that hate comment.

    Cancel TCD!!!

We know the show is Canadian content. At least, people who like the show acknowledge that. People bashing it don’t ever consider that when they rip on it.

The CW gets the show for extremely cheap because of it, and it’s raking in cash from online and international sales. According to the producers, it also does very well on the CWTV streaming site, which carries ads you can’t skip. Basically, even with lower ratings, the show is making the studio and the network a lot of money this year. As long as it continues to do so, and as long as the ratings don’t completely collapse like TCD’s did, it should be fine for a renewal. We won’t know for sure until May, but it’s a good bet.

    8:00 The Tomorrow People (NEW) (13 ep + )
    9:00 Oxygen (NEW) (Sept. 23) (13 ep +)

8:00 Heart of Dixie (22 ep)
    9:00 The Selection (NEW) (13 ep +)

    8:00 Arrow (24 ep)
    9:00 Supernatural (24 ep)

8:00 The Vampire Diaries (24 ep)
    9:00 The Originals (NEW) (24 ep+)

8:00 Beauty and the Beast (13+)
9:00 Nikita (21 ep) (FINAL SEASON)

    ANTM (13)
    Company Town (13 ep )

As much as I’d like The Hundred to be picked up as a midseason replacement, I think the CW will choose either Oxygen OR The Hundred, and Oxygen seems to have more sticking power with their demo. Company town seems to have the most room to cover a lot of the potential demo of the CW.

Beauty and the Beast can be moved if one new show TANKS, that’s why I se it as only a short season for now, with the potential to get a back 9.

If dis show getts renewed dats not fair CW need to renew The Secret Circle

  • CDC

The CW is about to become a network of the past. They need something! I feel so sorry for the dedicated, loyal fans who post on this site, begging that their favorite programs be renewed. The CW needs ratings! The great majority of Americans probably does not know that Beauty & the Beast, the Carie Diaries, or Nikita exist. They almost have no ratings numbers. Gone are the days of Smallville, 7th Heaven, & Reba! CW needs to do something different, or prepare slide off into television history!

You are right, I told a friend that she should watch B&TB on the CW and she said I don’t think I have that channel. I told her it was a local channel and she told me that when she saw it in the guide, she thought they were playing the movie! LOL

  • Kavyn

@Adam swap HOD/Selection and Nikita/BATB time slots and that looks like a solid schedule to me. HOD cannot be a lead in to a new show again, and considering BATB would be filler I don’t see any reason to put it at 8pm

  • DougF

The Bear has gotten Cult. CW has pulled it from their schedule

  • DougF

It’s funny how clueless you are when you say CW is about to become a network of the past.

They are in year two of a four year close to a billion dollar deal with Netflix. Which will probably be extended after the four years to keep the shows.

  • reedmac

    Cult has been cancelled

  • Reward

Ringer, last year, was cancelled with 0.5.
TCD CAN’T be renewed. That’s not right.

  • Matthew Chapman

Time to update the table-Cult has been Cancelled

  • Charmed

@Reward The network was in better shape last year, they could afford to cancel it.

  • lois

Hart of Dixie gets canccelled and beauty and the beast get renewed and Carries diaries get renewed so does nikkia. So hart of dixie has ran out of stories to tell. What else can they say about nouvelle?

PEOPLE DONT WATCH LIVE TV ANYMORE….even the numbers on the big television networks are dropping over all….who has the time to sit down and watch week after week a show when they can watch it all online all at once….

Maybe the CW is moving forward to the next thing and start streaming TV I was just talking to a friend the other day, now with all the technology out there and specially people under 45 yrs old dont really need to watch LIVE TV when they have streaming….I wouldnt mind watch streaming tv if my favorite show is there…..
