Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 7, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.38
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show  0.80
Raising Hope renewed 0.80
The Mindy Project renewed 0.83
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.06
Glee      1.12
American Dad renewed 1.14
New Girl renewed 1.14
Bones renewed 1.15
The Simpsons renewed 1.27
The Following renewed 1.43
Family Guy renewed 1.46

With effectively no suspense at all left with Fox's renewal and cancellation decisions, the cancellation bear is forced to continue to highlight the obvious.

While it's certain that Glee will be renewed, the cancellation bear receives a constant stream of inquiries hopeful of its cancellation from the show's anti-fans. Sadly for them, teeth gnashing over the outcome is inevitable.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Comedy Central gave a second chance to Futurama, years after Fox cancelled it and after several direct-to-video DVDs.
Maybe Comedy Central can give The Cleveland Show another chance If Fox cancels it.

    FOX 2013 Fall

    All Animation

While BONES is still fairly strong. Allow a new show to benefit from it.

    X FACTOR/IDOL midseason

    2 Hours

Probably the last season both shows will be 2 hours. If ratings go much lower , FOX shouldn’t waste the entire night with them. Can’t believe I’m thinking this, but next season might even be the last season for both.

    X FACTOR/IDOL midseason

Hope X FACTOR/IDOL don’t totally collapse by the third season. FOX needs to promote a new sitcom and maybe help Mindy Project become a hit.

Whatever cooking contest is the flavor of the month. Perhaps a FOX newsmagazine for a change.

Only 1 new drama and 1 new sitcom. No room, unless FOX cuts an hour or 2 of X FACTOR/IDOL. Not going to happen, yet…..

  • jj

It is FOX after all, they have a history of liking to renew crap. Fringe being on top of the list.

  • Jamie04

I don’t know any show that people constantly bash like Glee. If you don’t like it, don’t watch it and don’t complain about it. There are plenty of shows I don’t particularly like, but I don’t go online and complain it should be cancelled.

Those of us that enjoy Glee (and there are many) want it to be renewed. (Which I’m sure it will be!)

    Haters need to step away!

  • Mike

New Girl will stay on Tuesday at 9 or Thursday at 9. If New girl is on Thursday glee will anchor a new Tuesday lineup possible comedies. Mindy project might get the 9:00 slot after glee of it holds. If not midseason move to friday. New comedy after MP New comedy after New Girl

  • Aron

If you look at previous years ratings at fox this year their entire lineup collapsed. You can’t say nothing good happened this year compared to previous years

  • Networkman

Glee had some strong episodes this season. And then there were some subpar episodes. But it still has some life in it and the new students are begining to become more relatable. The writers have the challenge of making each character have a distinct voice and then making sure each of them have chemistry within the group.

There are several seniors graduating. I know that the actress playing Britney is pregnant, so I don’t feel she should return for the fifth season. The only one I feel should return is Blaine because of his connection to Kurt. He could join Racheal and the crew in New York. He really seems to be a favorite and has a decent voice.

  • forg

    Very weak season for F

  • Nick

What Fox should do for 2013-2014:

8: Bones (22 episodes; option for 24 if the creators want it to end)
    9: Gang Related (new) (13 episodes)/Untitled Wyman/Abrams project (new) (15 episodes)
    8: Delirium (new) (13 episodes)
    9: New Girl (24 episodes)
9:30: Two Wrongs (new) (13 episodes)

    8:  X Factor/ Idol

    8: The X Factor/ Idol
    9: Kitchen Nightmares (22 episodes)/ The Following (15 episodes)

8: Glee (22 episodes; option for 24 if the network/producers want it to end)
9: Raising Hope (same as Glee)
    9:30: Dads (new) (13 episodes)

    8: Fox Sports Saturday

    7: The OT/ Cops (18 episodes)
    7:30: The OT/ Bob’s Burgers
    8: The Simpsons (24 episodes)
    8:30: Bob’s Burgers (20 episodes–13 fall, 7 midseason)/ Murder Police (new)
    9: Family Guy (24 episodes)
    9:30: American Dad (22 episodes)

Midseason – The Mindy Project (13 episodes)
Also, the remainder of Kitchen Nightmares’s season.

  • Nick

People are talking nonsense. First of all I want to clarify that I’m not a fan of Glee (never really got into it, just watched a couple of episodes). But speaking with facts, Glee is still a top drama show in Fox (with The Following and Bones) and the show will get a full 22-episode season next fall, and even maybe a sixth season (which I think will be the last), so yeah, Glee is not going anywhere.

  • Wright

Well my 3 shows have been renewed New Girl, Bones and The Following. Bring back Fringe!!!

  • Kristyn

I really wish it would be cancelled. This season was a complete train wreck. I don’t see how this show can even be popular anymore.

  • Jessica

I watched the first few episodes of this season and really just hated them, so I stopped watching Glee, but I recognize that a lot of other people still like it and I really enjoyed its first three seasons (particularly season 1), so I can’t hate on it getting renewed.

  • Dan

If FOX renews The Cleveland show, the earliest it will return is January 2014 and that is unlikely given FOX’s full schedule and Murder Police airing 13 eps midseason. With FOX trying to burn off so many episodes this spring it shows that they want to get the show out of the way. If they wanted to renew the show and they ended up doing so in Dec-Feb they would hold a few episodes back from this season and combine them with 13 season 5 eps to create a full season. King of the Hill got a last minute reprieve in March 2006 for an 11th season for midseason but that was because all of FOX’s other comedies flopped at the time and they had no new animated shows for the next season. Its only a matter of an announcement from FOX, though I’m surprised Seth didn’t make one.

Glee will be renewed but whether its now or mid May is anyone’s guess. Maybe it will be for a final season or midseason but it WILL be back. Touch is dead and has 3 eps left.

Ok, here is my take for Fox 2013 – 2014:

    8: Bones
    9: Rake/The Following

Some combination of the following, perhaps:
    8: Mindy
    8:30 Friends and Family
    9: New Girl
    9:30: Gabriels

Fox begins to look past AI and X factor by shortening them to 90 min performance shows.
    8: X Factor/AI
    9:30: Dads/Brooklyn 99

Fox limits results shows to one hour shows at all times.
    8: X factor/AI
    9: Delirium/The List

    8: Raising Hope
    8:30: To My Assistant
    9: Glee, final 13 episode season/Kitchen Nightmares

    Saturday: Fox Sports Saturday/Reruns/Cops

    Sunday: Animation Domination

Don’t forget Fox has ordered some event/min-series like programs that will have to air at some point as well.

  • Meliwa

No way Fox is breaking up their Tuesday Comedy block, that last schedule is simply delusional. Tuesday is Fox’s #1 night in terms of ratings, so Raising Hope stays on Tuesdays. Same thing about Kitchen Nighmares on Fridays, it stays at 8.

And honestly, Interested Viewer, I don’t know what weed you’ve been smoking where you think Fox is going to a 90-minute format on live performance shows. Especially in the beginning of performance episodes where they have 20 contestants to highlight.

  • Illinois

    What FOX should do:

    8:00 – Bones (24 episodes)
    9:00 – J.J. Abrams Project (13 episodes) / The Following (15 episodes)

    8:00 – Raising Hope (24 episodes)
    8:30 – Mike Schur Project (13-22 episodes)
    9:00 – Delirium (13 episodes) / Sleepy Hollow (13 episodes)

    8:00 – The X-Factor / American Idol

    8:00 – The X-Factor / American Idol
    9:00 – New Girl (24 episodes)
    9:30 – The Mindy Project (22 episodes)

8:00 – Glee (22 episodes, Two Hour Series Finale)
    9:00 – Kitchen Nightmares

    7:30 – American Dad! (20 episodes)
8:00 – The Simpsons (24 episodes, One Hour Season Finale)
    8:30 – Murder Police (13-22 episodes)
9:00 – Family Guy (24 episodes, One Hour Season Finale)
    9:30 – Bob’s Burgers (22 episodes)

    Thoughts ?

  • CBSviewer

Just a question: Last year FOX Renewed The Simpsons for two seasons but the 25th season had been announced as the final season or not ?

  • Interested Viewer

What I’ve been smoking is the news that Fox has been in decline the last couple of years. While the performance shows still get ratings above the typical Fox program, may other shows left on Fox are in their last year or two of decent ratings (Glee, Bones). They need real estate to develop new programming. I’ve actually tried to use the performance shows as a means of launching some of that new programming. They did same old, same old this year, and look where it has taken them. Reilly needs to shake things up. I’m open to Raising Hope staying on Tuesdays, but I don’t think it matches well with New Girl or Mindy, both of which are stronger and have a longer potential horizon.
