While the cancellation bear would like no better to have the chance to devour rookie drama Hannibal with a nice Chianti and some fava beans, the show's premiere ratings last week were plenty good enough on ratings challenged NBC to have the bear begin his prediction for its future at "likely to be renewed". Early predictions are subject to rapid change, stay tuned.

The observant will note that the bear has moved The New Normal prediction up to "likely canceled" from "certain to be canceled". With its recent ratings gains airing after The Voice, it's cancellation is not nearly as certain as 1600 Penn or Guys With Kids.

A note to those in denial, there has been no formal announcement that Smash has been canceled, but when a show is sent to Saturday during its run, it has been canceled. There will be no formal announcement.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Hannibal need two weeks of big promotion, so the show have a good audience.
And the most important, their will be a season 2 :).

  • RG-X

    NBC – Ready For Love?

More like; Ready for Crap – stop with he dating shows already! Please!

  • samurai99

Perhaps NBC should just give up on comedies and expand their drama hours.

  • bob

I can’t believe that NBC would renew that trash The New Normal. At least ABC has a great show in Modern Family and even Glee is better that the worst show in history The New Normal. I wish Partners had been on NBC as it would have been renewed. NBC is so deparate for horrid shows.

  • James

Will Hannibal’s first season air outside the TV season? Since NBC says each season will only consist of 13 episodes, it seems NBC wants to try cable scheduling and puts Hannibal on air from April to June every year.

  • David

Funny that you decide to mention nearly every network show with a gay character. Now please explain how exactly The New Normal is trash?

  • Max

I think it’s a little bit harsh on Small. I mean, to call it cancelled when it’s still airing new episodes? Don’t get me wrong, I don`t have any doubt that it will not come back next season, but the way I see it, Up all night has a worst prospect than Smash and it’s still not being called cancelled. Just my thought.

  • Mal

Nice record, Bill! And that’s why I swear by this site! Haha

  • Tommy M.

    @ Max,

Sure there’s a little tea leaf reading when it comes to Smash, but with NBC moving new episodes to Saturday that’s a clear indication the show is going to be canceled. Up All Night’s prospects are very low, but NBC could recast Christina Applegate, rework the show and bring it back in the fall. I doubt that will happen, but IMHO that is more likely to happen than Smash getting a 3rd season.

    I would go for:

Monday [no need for the biggest looser to be used as filler since they have the olympics]
    The Voice
    The Voice
    The Sixth Gun

    The Voice

    The Biggest Looser/ Parenthood
The Biggest Looser/ After Hours [Olympics promotion]
    Chicago Fire

    Parks and Recreation
    New Comedy
    New Comedy
    Law and Order: SVU

Friday [Hallowen Start to take advantage of shows theme and to concentrate promotional efforts of early fall on the comedies, believe and the sixth gun; they would also avoid the hiatus like that – air repeats from believe and the sixth gun here until then]
    Hannibal or Dracula

  • Allen

Look, I just want Community to have a proper send off. Okay? :(

  • PurpleDrazi

Nice to have something to talk about other than Whitney and Guys with Kids.

I don’t watch Hannibal but I hope it does get renewed because NBC could sure use another win (and at least it’s not another reality show!)

  • bluejoni

I thought Hannibal was a bore !! It was soooo slow !! Bates Motel is much much better !!

  • jane

Law and Order Original was predicted for certain renewal here, but it wasnt picked up.

  • Rob

I believe they had it as “Likely Renewal”, not “Certain Renewal”

  • dref22

Ahhh that pic is a nice Silence Of The Lambs reference! :D

  • Mary

I thought Hannibal was boring as well. I’ll give it more of chance since I like Hugh Dancy but I really hope they improve on what I saw in the pilot.

  • Jonay

Why wouldnt NBC renew Guys with Kids??? reason being it can stand on its own 2 feet and has decent ratings on the train wreck NBC!!

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“Law and Order Original was predicted for certain renewal here, but it wasnt picked up.”

It was “certain renewal” at some point in its final season, but it wasn’t when the decision finally came down.

It was a teachable moment for me, I think I had the show as either a “toss up” or “likely canceled”, when NBC’s entertainment chief (at the time) Angela Bromstead said something to the effect of “I’m not going to be the person to prevent L&O from breaking the drama longevity record”. That had me move my prediction to “likely renewed”. That was the last lesson I needed to ignore everything said in public by TV execs!

  • Penny

Hopefully Hannibal gets a second season. It’s pilot was visually beautiful and I couldn’t stop watching.
