While the cancellation bear would like no better to have the chance to devour rookie drama Hannibal with a nice Chianti and some fava beans, the show's premiere ratings last week were plenty good enough on ratings challenged NBC to have the bear begin his prediction for its future at "likely to be renewed". Early predictions are subject to rapid change, stay tuned.

The observant will note that the bear has moved The New Normal prediction up to "likely canceled" from "certain to be canceled". With its recent ratings gains airing after The Voice, it's cancellation is not nearly as certain as 1600 Penn or Guys With Kids.

A note to those in denial, there has been no formal announcement that Smash has been canceled, but when a show is sent to Saturday during its run, it has been canceled. There will be no formal announcement.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I noticed Hannibal is against reruns of Scandal & Elementary tonight. Hopefully it can maintain its demo from last week or even grow from its premiere. With only 13 episodes a season planned it could easily share a timeslot next season with the upcoming Crossbones that has only 10 episodes.

    @ senor chang

You’re right, The Voice makes it possible to see your guys favorite shows on the network. Guys with Kids will likely make it to season two.

    @ Fam

Yeah these schedules I’ve seen aren’t good some are alright or better than what NBC will actually come up with for the fall. As far as Whitney goes I can see them keeping it only because they own it but it will be a mid-season backup option again. If NBC doesn’t go with a multi-cam block only Whit or GWK will comeback alone.

    @ Bradleigh H Horton

Chicago Fire is the biggest TV upset in sometime, they were riding Nashville’s nuts before the season and now CF has become the scripted MVP for NBC this season. Good decision on the network’s part to plan a spin-off too.

  • Hardline_Pro

Was I the only one who could barely understand what he was saying in the pilot?

  • The End

    @Dan S

Perhaps, from what I understand about the show, it gets progressively darker, and more depressing. It may not survive the first season, typically shows like this don’t last for long..

Admire your optimism but think the show will likely drop below 4 million, perhaps low 1ts for the rest of its run.

  • Anthony

Yes Bill, you did the right thing with The New Normal.

LOL @ all those people trying to argue with me the other day when its season finale ratings came out. All I was trying to say is that it definitely is not CERTAIN to be cancelled with those finale ratings and NBC seeming to like it. It doesn’t mean it’s likely to be renewed either, but it’s in no way “certain” to be cancelled.

But of course, back then, Bill hadn’t had a chance to upgrade the show to “likely”, so all I got was everyone else arguing with a brick wall that of course The New Normal was “certain” to be cancelled no matter what. You guys wanna come back now and start arguing again about how crazy I am for saying TNN shouldn’t be “certain” cancellation and should at worst be “likely” cancellation? LOL, yeah, I thought not.

Personally, I’d have it as toss up, but with its first-part season finale adjusting down to a 1.7 from a 1.9, I can see “likely” cancellation as the proper category, especially given what some are saying about how NBC might hardly bring back any comedies next year (though I’m not certain I agree with that). But the season’s not over yet for some shows, and if they continue to go down, that only makes TNN look more appealing in comparison, especially when the network already seems to like it and want an excuse to renew it.

Never you fret Tommy. I’m still here and I still disagree with you. I don’t see the point in continuing to argue with you, we each stated our reasons last week and still disagree. You look at it’s numbers and see it as on the bubble, I look at them and see no possible way it will come back. We’ll just have to wait until the end of the year to see who is correct.

@Nick (and whomever else might be interested….Ricky, couchpotato if you’re reading)
The elimination game has a new thread tonight, thanks to Bill. I imported the NBC votes and the premium cable votes over there. I don’t know if I can post the link here but it’s on this site anyway – look for “elimination game” and “page four” if you want to continue with the game. I emailed Ricky the link. We’re just down to two shows in the NBC game (anyone want to help Parks & Rec win? Help me vote it up! lol It’s down to 6 votes while Revolution is winning). In the premium cable category, Dexter and Game of Thrones are ten points apart.

  • Oliver

Does anyone know if NBC has any mockumentary-style comedy pilots this season?

Their top 2 comedies are mockumentaries and Modern Family is obviously a monster on ABC. Why aren’t they developing similar shows?

This seems especially strange as it’s much harder to write a funny comedy without some crutch, whether cut-aways, voice-overs, pieces-to-camera or laugh tracks. Why is NBC making life hard for themselves by creating all these difficult-to-write single-camera shows without these tricks? Do they secretly love of Community so much that they insist on duplicating its format, even when it’s proven to be incredibly difficult to do?

  • mam61232

GO ON and Community are safe just because the rest of the comedy’s on NBC are so weak. Still to early to call Hannibal, the one good thing that NBC has going is Hannibal has a lower license fee so I could maybe see them bringing it back for 8 or 13 episodes next season. Also I heard a rumor that if Whitney is canceled on NBC E network may pick it up in the fall

  • Zooey

I really like 1600 Penn it was funny typical dysfunctional family but that’s what made it good. Shameless it about a dysfunctional family and its an awesome show. The finale of 1600 Penn was really good I really hope they bring it back , can’t wait to see what happens next. What is to become of Marshall and becca? That’s just my opinion.

  • Twitter: @fanboyed

Why does it say that Smash is canceled? That has yet to be confirmed.

  • Dan S

@ The Bear OmNomNom, regarding your fantasy schedule there’s no way Revolution would air air at 8pm. 9pm is the earliest timeslot it would get due to its violent content. Assuming it moves from Mon it will likely air Tues at 10pm. I understand Wonderland is a limited run series so it will likely be a midseason replacement. Parenthood has always been on the fall schedule & I could see it going to Wed at 8p or possibly 9pm. I agree Believe will be on the fall schedule but I see that going after The Voice on Mon at 10p or possibly Tues at 9pm.

  • The End

    @The Bear OmNomNom

As Dan said, not only will Revolution stay on Monday after The Voice, it won’t air at 8pm either.

    @Twitter: @fanboyed

Dreadful ratings, dumped on Saturday. Cancelation announcement forthcoming.

  • omabin

I am surprised more people don’t think it is a good idea for NBC to put TBL on the fall schedule, with it needing to plug so many holes. And where do people want to schedule it exactly? It won’t be needed to bridge the voice cycles due to the olympics. the only option is sunday spring but I am not sure they will can the apprentice. Besides, using it in the fall is the perfect placeholder for whatever they put in its place next after strong olympics promotion

  • James

    The Voice
    The Sixth Gun

    The Voice
    Hatfields & McCoys

    About A Boy
    Chicago Fire
    Chicago Fire spinoff

    Go On

    4 new dramas/2 new comedies

    For Midseason:
    Biggest Loser
    Betty White
    Sing Off
    3 new dramas
    2 new comedies
    and maybe some new realities

  • Anthony

I knew before “Hannibal” even started that it would get great numbers and most likely will get a Season 2 nod here pretty soon. I’m hoping “The New Normal” doesn’t get canceled though :( I really like it. That little girl who plays Shania is so sweet and funny. Hopefully the numbers will go up and NBC keeps it for next season
