The CW has officially pulled the plug on Cult and has yanked the struggling drama from its Friday lineup after 7 episodes. There are no immediate plans to air the show's 6 remaining episodes. Filling its slot will be re-runs of The Carrie Diaries and Oh Sit. This news has been confirmed via series creator Rockne S. O'Bannon on Twitter:

Actually, Matt Davis wasn’t happy being a secondary character and had creativity issues with Julie Plec. So they discussed together to end his character so that he could go on to explore other projects. I understand his frustration but at the same time JP did the best she could creatively, making him ‘Klaus’ and then psycho!Alaric but I guess it wasn’t enough for him. I was kind of hoping Cult would flop, he lost a good thing on TVD.

@Dave I read that Matt was bored on tvd with the direction of his charactor and wanted out. But you are probably right.

well..after pulling in a .1 rating it was very much expected to be cancelled. it would be really irrational to keep it airing.

R.I.P. Cult — So, I guess we have a threshold for both Fridays (CULT) and weeknights (EOMD)below which even the CW will not go . . . .

Making him “Klaus” in 2nd season was Kevin Williamson’s idea (and when the show was actual good)

It looks like The CW really has hope for TCD. I now wouldn’t be surprised if its renewed.

  • Dave

Well those words were from his mouth directly. I’m a huge Nikita and TVD fan and never have I heard he wanted out.

What ever the case his, he’s appearing on the Season Finale of TVD so I’m sure we’ll be seeing him in some shape or form now during Season 5 now that Cult has been disposed of.

I suppose BATB is in the runnings for a renewal. So addicted to the show!!!!!!!!!

  • firemike

They never copied the following , It came out first though. The people who put it together took far too long to release it.. I filmed in it last March and it should have been ready way before it was.. I seen it coming

  • psychic

Pfft. What “great, smart fans” is he referring to?

  • Sab G

If this means Matt Davis can come back to TVD as Ghost!Alaric (or any form of Alaric, I don’t care) then it’s for the best. And of course ‘Cult’ was terrible. So weird how the same showrunner can produce greatness (in this case ‘Farscape’) as well as awful dullness (‘Cult’). Of course, Rockne is far from the only showrunner to have done that.

@psychic–the five total viewers who actually bothered to watch more than the first 5 minutes the show. Sorry, I’d rather think the 8,282,271,827,267,693,067 fans who didn’t bother to watch more than the first 5 minutes were the smarter fans.

Will TCD repeats do any better? NO

  • Shabbir

How did Cult ever get green lighted? Im sorry but one of the worse concepts for a tv show. I gave it a chance but man do I wish I got that time back. :-(

  • Jane Elliot

I don’t know about all of the behind the scenes drama at TVD, but if it could be worked out for Alaric to return to Mystic Falls, I’d be thrilled. Especially with Klaus leaving. Heck, the show could become watchable again!

  • John

@Hardline_Pro if you actually watched both shows, you’d see that they’re nothing alike other than they are both about Cults.

  • Bitter Ringer Fan

@Hardline_Pro Ignorant much? Cult was made a while ago, it actually could have premiered during the fall of 2012 way before The Following but at the end it was released as a mid season replacement, so no copy here. Besides if you watch both shows you’ll notice they’re not similar except for the name. I watch and like both of them and hope to see the remaining episodes at some point.

I bet the CW is kicking themselves now for cancelling Emily Ownes. The ratings were continuing to go up & were higher than HOD at one point. I do hope they renew BATB because other than SPN it’s my favorite show & is getting better & better every episode!

  • Fake Me Out

Apparently the next print edition of Websters is going to use this as an example for the definition of “failure” eg. Your show is removed from the CW schedule for low ratings. I’m actually neutral on the move as I don’t watch the show so am not vested in the decision but, it’s about time the CW made a move like this and started acting like a big boy network.

Idiots still hallucinating that TCD has ANY shot at renewal…
