Criminal Minds is amazing! Still able to crack a 3.0 in the demo for being an eight year old show so far! Love it!

  • Brandy

    Glad Nashville didn’t adjust down

  • Justin121

Suburgatory loses 2 million from Middle then 5 million tune in for Mod Family.

Still I think ABC should keep this line up intact.

Only try a new comedy behind MF or even keep How to Live.

    Also keep Nashville.

  • Dan

So glad for Nashville. Definitely will be renewed.

  • Watch TNA Tonight on SPIKE @ 8/7c

“I would guess because they don’t really gain much by making such claims. If the courts don’t think what Aereo is doing is illegal, they will rule for them regardless of how much the networks hate it. Second from the get go ABC and NBC have been the most silent on the issue, it has really been CBS and Fox spearheading this. I can certainly see why CBS is the most concerned, as they don’t have cable networks to support their business like the others do.”

CBS does have cable networks its all the Viacom channels connected with MTV Networks like Showtime, MTV, Nickelodeon, SPIKE, and a few more I can’t remember.

CBS and News Corp. are just really greedy corporations, Disney and Comcast know that outside content can support their networks so they don’t have to worry about it.

Hannibal Repeat also adjusted up nicely.

I just realized something, tell me if I’m mistaken.

American Idol used to be “event viewing”. Meaning that most everyone was watching live minute for minute. Which translates to “full” shares for each Nielsen viewer.

Now, I bet a lot more are watching starting @ about 8:30pm & catching up via the DVR, avoiding the commercials.

Which is why the L+SD #s are so much lower year to year.

However, what I realized just now is that the demo that advertisers care about the “Commercial” demo is even more affected. a 75% viewer is a drop, ure, but it isn’t that much of a drop compared to “1%” for all of those that now avoid the “Commercials”.

For regular programs, “event viewing” isn’t as big a thing. Though big fandom’s like TVD, SPN, Glee, Psych etc can get a nice portion of “event viewers”. In general though, it’s not a factor that we don’t see.

I just wonder if there is enough “Commercial Viewing” data points from this season, last & s10, in order to see if my idea comes true.

Mind you, I believe that if it still has a significant “event viewing” factor, then the “commercial viewing” will drop just about as much as the L+SD viewing has.

    @Bill Gorman
If you see this, please start another thread for our Elimination Game? Looks like we reached the maximum again now on the third thread. So a page Four is needed whenever you can provide it, thanks in advance.

Just to add some two cents on this whole Aereo thing.

I think perhaps people are missing the more obvious reason why NBC executives aren’t on the record threatening to pull the network from free to air airwaves and it has to do with the company that just recently brought them and some of the reassurances said company had to make when purchasing them. There’s also the issue that by telling anyone who’ll listen that you’re going to pull your network from free to air airwaves you not only look somewhat ridiculous but you also provide Aereo with some free PR that just drives more traffic to them. Really the best thing CBS and Fox could have done here is the same as NBC and ABC and basically just stay quiet on the whole thing publicly.

Last year Suburgatory was building from the Middle (in the demo, Middle has more viewers usually) but when spring came, it started to just match the demo and eventually went below a tenth or two.

I can’t blame ABC if they switched Neighbors and Suburgatory as I also thought Suburgatory would benefit and since Neighbors got bad reviews so the slot will be wasted. But in hindsight, ABC should have not made that decision and kept the schedule since Neighbors eventually got better (although that does not guarantee good ratings)and Suburgatory didn’t grow with the new timeslot

Well How to Live will have MF reruns for lead in for 2 weeks, let’s see how it will do but I think it will collapse

Now, I bet a lot more are watching starting @ about 8:30pm & catching up via the DVR, avoiding the commercials.

Which is why the L+SD #s are so much lower year to year.

If people are watching (via DVR) from 8:30 they’d still be captured in the Live+SD figures so that wouldn’t even begin to explain why those numbers are down year-on-year. The SD in Live+SD stands for same day so any viewer that’s watching the show before the 2am (I think its 2am it might just as easily be 3am) cut off point would be counted. That the show has lost its ‘event’ status might help to explain why drops in Live+SD are more pronounced than drops for Live+3 or Live+7 although I don’t know how much truth there is to that statement as I have paid no attention to its Live+3 or +7 numbers.

However if fewer people are opting to watch the show live I would imagine that it significantly dents the shows C3 numbers. Part of the appeal of a show like Idol from an advertiser perspective particularly during the live stages is that more people tend to watch live and therefore are unable to skip ads. On a somewhat related note part of the reason broadcasters have embraced Twitter that’s often overlooked is that it encourages live viewing by having people Tweet along with the show. The Voice’s heavy push on social media is one of its big selling points when its been pitched to broadcasters. Something about creating a social viewing experience with modern technology that encourages people to watch live. You can’t Tweet that the coaches should turn around for someone during the blind auditions if you’re watching 6 hours after everyone else. Well you can but apparently it isn’t as much fun or something…

Not saying that they aren’t greedy but the Viacom networks are no longer connected to CBS. They were spun off into a separate company in 2006. Showtime stills resides with CBS, but that’s pretty much it for them.

  • Barbie

Wow, Hannibal with a 1.0 repeat.

  • catsrule

How does Suburgatory get adjusted up but The Middle stays the same? If anything on ABC was adjusted up it should be Modern Family with the overrun.

  • CriminalMindsCraft

CM stable and strong in the ratings game yet ..No pickup as of yet..

Great job CM , hopefully season nine, ten and beyond

  • Charmed

ABC should move Nashville to a night with more compatible shows. And I hope they notice that it does better when CF isn’t on.

  • andri

I an dissatisfied w / happy ending & suburgatory role playing lifesaver for body of proof. Yes, we ‘re all aware of nbc’s square pegged comedies falling to bits. I hope it baits new girl, bones (deschannel ‘s kabbalah from oprah) and sinks both to the middled- pit of the bottomless ocean. Drama ‘s are the best, but both besomed shemar moore, Thomas Gibson’s & vangnes closed the market. Cbs is not about to lose both to prod Nbc
    on.

    re: Aereo

    (1) The networks are threatening to pull OTA transmissions where Aereo is, not nationwide. So right now, it is just the NYC DMA that would be affected

    (2) I wonder how many people will still subscribe to Aereo when all they can offer is NYC independent stations. That should wreck the business model nicely.

  • Anna Bones Clarkwood

    @Alex,

TomM said: “I’m pretty sure (somebody else feel free to correct me if I’m wrong) the DVR viewing counts, but only what’s actually watched (or, since the Nielsen box works by being hooked into the TV speakers, I guess technically “heard”). So if you watch, say, 44 minutes of show and 16 minutes of commercial in an hour, you get 44/60ths credit. You’d get no credit in the C+3 measurement of commercial viewing though, which, economics-wise is the more significant measurement.”

Which is why I said that L+SD should see a 25% drop as 44/60 is 75%. That’s where I was getting my basis for L+SD drop bigger than normal once “event viewing” is not as nearly important.

The rest of your post I agree with & yes I know that L+SD includes DVR viewing, but Tom M says if they don’t watch ads, &/or by extension, skip some judges comments, those minutes aren’t accounted for. Which means, actually, technically, that to get .1 demo will take more than 22 viewers. Hmm, not sure what that means as far as repesentative of number of demo viewers. I realize that means way less viewers that advertisers care about, but actual “popularity”, that might not be as much a drop as the numbers would suggest.

I also like that you brought up Twitter & Voice. I’m not really a tweeter, I even gave up idolforums after s9-s11, so I’m not sure about the activity level, live. But, I do know that Idol activity was nowhere near it’s heyday. Voice on idolforums was getting slightly hotter, still way lower than Idol, though. Just an FYI.

You don’t take those threats seriously do you?

They are 100% for politician/court lobbying. No chance they follow through.

As for Aereo, I’m not sure what their ultimate play is. They certainly have no sustainable business model at this point.
