Don't Trust The B---- has already been devoured by the cancellation bear. Happy Endings may live on with a cable net, but it's certain to be canceled by ABC. What about the next three higher rated ABC sitcoms?

Malibu Country averaged a 1.3 rating for new episodes since March 1.

Last Man Standing averaged a 1.5 rating since March 1.

The Neighbors averaged a 1.5 rating since March 1.

Of those three, the bear is most confident in the renewal of Last Man Standing. It's a second year show, airing on Friday which carries some level of low ratings forgiveness, and has matched The Neighbors ratings since March 1.

Based on the early relative success of How To Live With Your Parents, and The Neighbors relatively weak ratings since March 1, the bear is now moving The Neighbors back to a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal.

The bear still likes The Neighbors chances better than those of Malibu Country though, and would give it the least chance for renewal out of the three.

Our final up or down guesses for all shows still with uncertain fates will come on May 7.

Rookie sitcom How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest Of Your Life) is also in the mix for renewal, but its current ratings are high enough to put it well out of the range of those other three.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I was afraid this would happen.

  • Oliver

…might be worth changing the chart?

  • RandyL

But the table still shows The Neighbors with 4 smiles.

  • forg

Much as I like it The Neighbors it is likely cancelled. It didn’t even get a DVR bump for its season finale while the rest of Wednesday block got big bumps (even The Middle who rarely gets big DVR bump went from 1.8 to 2.5). It’s just too weak now.Sad since the show really got better towards the end

“…might be worth changing the chart?”

Spreadsheet error Will Robinson! Now fixed. Clear your cache if you’re still seeing four smilies.

  • Dan

This should have been the headline since January, with the introuduction of How to Live With Your Parents and limited sitcom time, there’s probably no reason for ABC to bring back The Neighbors.

I expect comedies Modern Family, The Middle, Suburgatory, Last Man Standing, and How to Live With Your Parents to be renewed

I also expect dramas Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, Castle, Revenge, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, and Even Body of Proof to be renewed.

Cancellation of The Neighbors would be the biggest loss of the season…

  • Marc

The problem with not renewing MC is neither Neighbors nor Parents pairs well with LMS, and neighbors is barely better than MC on a much better night. So you either slip Neighbors after LMS and hope it keeps the decent retention MC had or go all new and hope for the same. I’m not sure why you risk either scenario when you already know MC is performing solid for the slot with ought much promotion.

  • Just Desserts

Wow. Barely a month before renewals and The Neighbors get screwed. :-(

  • Jeff (Canada)

I expect them to renew The Neighbors. ABC is losing 2 returning comedies this year (Apt 23 and Happy Endings), so it makes logical sense to renew 2 new ones (Parents and Neighbors).

Then in the fall move Neighbors to Fridays with LMS and premiere a new show on Wednesdays right before Modern Family.

  • John_M

Here’s an idea, air how to live with your parents before new episodes of modern family instead of after them and then let’s see what happens.

  • toons

i cant imagine neighbors not coming back… most of those airings were in the middle of reruns… one night it was the only new ep… they burned off so they could squeeze in some new shows before the end of the season. with reruns of mod fam till may, the new parents show is headed for mid to upper 1’s for sure.

curious to see how the 2 suburgs do. would have liked to see neighbors get the full 8pm hour like that… would have been a better barometer than sitting in between reruns.

  • David

    @Jeff (Canada)

    Where would Suburgatory go?

  • Bill Gorman

“Here’s an idea, air how to live with your parents before new episodes of modern family instead of after them and then let’s see what happens.”

Anti-fans aren’t going to have that satisfaction this season, but keep your anti-fan powder dry for next season!

If Neighbors gets renewed I think it will either be set with a late fall premiere on Friday or be held for midseason. If whatever new comedy on Wednesdays flops then Neighbors could slide back in. It could easily be cancelled though especially since how to Live seems likely to get renewed.

Malibu Country, Red Widow, Happy Endings cancelled (maybe HE gets a cable reprieve). BOP could still squeak out a renewal for midseason, wouldn’t shock me. All other shows renewed.

Wondering how ABC will handle their sitcoms though. Even if Neighbors gets cancelled there are 4 Wed sitcoms getting renewed and ABC will premiere one new Wed comedy in the fall I’d assume. So does Suburgatory get treated like Cougar Town and HE and sent to another night and fade away or does it stay on Wednesday but get held until midseason?

  • JacobYates

Tomorrow will be the true test for How to Live…, as it’s airing after a MF repeat. I’m predicting mid to high 1s. It won’t get a 2 or above without MF to prop it up. You can take that to the bank.

  • Dan

They should air an extra How to Live episode at 8:30 on April 24 instead of a Modern Family repeat, so 9 episodes can air this season instead of 8. ABC knows that extra episodes held over from the first season isnt a good thing like what happened with Apartment 23.

If How to Live is renewed, it most likely will be for Wed at 8:30 or 9:30 next season and will probably premiere late September if the 5 episodes are combined with 13 more episodes that works for an 18 episode second season or maybe more if the show does well.

  • dude

Modern Family, Subergatory and The Middle are all returning so why would they feel like they had to renew The Neighbours and How to Live With Your Parents?

  • Jeff (Canada)

I would put it back at 9:30 after Modern Family.

Because they renewed those 3 last year, along with 2 other shows. When in doubt, just look at what they did a year ago and if most of what they did is similar, you have to assume they’ll stick with that plan. They’ll renew 2 more comedies this season along with the 3 you mentioned. Plus LMS.
