Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 14, 2013):

Don't Trust The B---- has already been devoured by the cancellation bear. Happy Endings may live on with a cable net, but it's certain to be canceled by ABC. What about the next three higher rated ABC sitcoms?

Malibu Country averaged a 1.3 rating for new episodes since March 1.

Last Man Standing averaged a 1.5 rating since March 1.

The Neighbors averaged a 1.5 rating since March 1.

Of those three, the bear is most confident in the renewal of Last Man Standing. It's a second year show, airing on Friday which carries some level of low ratings forgiveness, and has matched The Neighbors ratings since March 1.

Based on the early relative success of How To Live With Your Parents, and The Neighbors relatively weak ratings since March 1, the bear is now moving The Neighbors back to a "toss up" for cancellation or renewal.

The bear still likes The Neighbors chances better than those of Malibu Country though, and would give it the least chance for renewal out of the three.

Our final up or down guesses for all shows still with uncertain fates will come on May 7.

Rookie sitcom How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest Of Your Life) is also in the mix for renewal, but its current ratings are high enough to put it well out of the range of those other three.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

As long as OUAT gets renewed that’s all I care about.

  • Rebecca

Dang it, I really liked those new neighbors.

  • Fake Me Out

I say Malibu Country is renewed not because of the Friday factor but because of the cute redhead factor … damn my ginger fever!

  • MichaelChickless

Go Last Man Standing! (It’s the only thing I watch on ABC.)

  • Dan

This season reminds me of 2010-2011. 4/5 dramas were flops so the last 1 was renewed (Body of Proof then, Nashville now) and in terms of the 3 new comedies the first two new ones didnt do great(Better With You & Mr. Sunshine then, and The Neighbors & Malibu Country now) The last comedy is renewed (Happy Endings then, HTLWYP now)

My guess for next season could be this
    7:00 AFHV
8:00 Once Upon a Time / OUAT spinoff
    9:00 Revenge
    10:00 Nashville

If a new show wont work in the 10pm slot Sundays then maybe Nashville will work in the slot. If ABC renews it then it might be a better fit on Sundays.

    8:00 DWTS
    10:00 Castle

Same as always, no need to fix what isnt broken.

    8:00 Suburgatory
8:30 The Neighbors or New Comedy
    9:00 DWTS
10:00 Body of Proof or New Drama

I can see this in terms of comedies, if ABC renews The Neighbors they could pair it with Suburgatory and move both to Tuesdays at 8 (Similar to how ABC moved both Happy Endings and Apartment 23 away from Wednesday) If the Neighbors is cancelled then ABC can try out a new comedy at 8:30. Also if ABC decides to cancel BOP or move it to midseason a new drama could be tested Tuesdays at 10, but seriously if BOP does the best out of all other dramas on Tuesday why cancel it if a new drama will probably do worse?

    8:00 The Middle
8:30 New Comedy or How to Live
    9:00 Modern Family
9:30 How to Live or New Comedy
    10:00 New Drama

I expect The Middle and Modern Family to remain in their slots and if How to Live is renewed it will either remain at 9:30 or move to 8:30 but either way ABC will keep it on Wed and premiere a new comedy in the other slot.

    8:00 SHIELD
    9:00 Grey’s Anatomy
    10:00 Scandal

The high profile slot at 8 could be perfect for the anticipated SHIELD, it would probably hold up well against Big Bang and X Factor.

    8:00 Last Man Standing
    8:30 New Comedy
    9:00 Shark Tank
    10:00 20/20

I Cant see Malibu Country getting renewed so a new multi cam comedy might pair better with LMS on fridays. Hopefully it will premiere in late Sept/Early Oct instead of November. Why those shows premiered so late last season is anyones guess but its not a good idea to premiere them last next season. If ABC wants a 2 hour comedy block on Fridays then maybe in my schedule their Tuesday 8pm hour would move to Fridays at 9 and Shark Tank could return to its former slot Tuesdays at 8.

    FALL 2013 ABC :

    BACHELOR-2 Hours

    DWTS-2 Hours

OUAT- I hope it does well here.
    New Show- S.H.I.E.L.D
    New Show-10:00

    New sitcom
    Modern Family
    How to Live

Shark Tank- This should help the timeslot.

    Last Man Standing
    Malibu Country

3 new shows. 1 new 30min sitcom and 2 new 1 hour shows.

Canceled the DWTS results show. Viewers can wait until the next week to see the eliminations. Allows ABC more space for other programs. DWTS doesn’t deserve 3 hours a week anymore. Probably doesn’t even warrant 2 hours a week.

The 2 hour comedy block on Friday certainly will keep millions of ABC viewers happy!

  • Fred

Bachelor should perform OK against the NFL and TWD. Probably better than OUAT and REVENGE have been doing. Also might help Nashville. ABC can’t be happy with Sundays lately, this move should help ABC on Sunday. Worth a shot.

Right now ABC is fairly weak on Tuesday. OUAT and S.H.I.E.L.D should help improve the 2 hour block and perhaps help a new Tuesday 10:00 program

Revenge should do OK on Wednesday 10:00. Far less competitive than Sunday.

  • Tommy

Body of Proof should be on the bubble. Last year, you predicted Body of Proof would certain to be canceled. It was renewed. I think you should upgrade to on the Bubble. it definitely has a 50/50 chance of renewal. I just can’t see ABC canceling a show that soars in DVR ratings and attracts over 9 million per episode (more than scandal grey’s & once & revenge & nashville & red widow). In fact DWST is the highest rated with 14 million, then castle with 11 million, then modern family with 10 million then BOP with 9 million. The 18-49 rating is only at a 1.4, but it has not fell below the shows season premiere which is always a good sign, despite 4 weeks without a DWTS lead in. In season 2, the show scored a 1.2 rating and 6.2 million viewers. This seasons lowest rating has been a 1.2 and 6.4 million viewers. SAVE BODY OF PROOF!

  • Sel

They have to renew The Neighbors! I don’t care what critics says, it’s damn good show and it’s way better than half the comedies on TV.

  • person

I’m glad that people are recognizing that the Neighbors isn’t a lock for renewal.

ABC almost has as much schedule flexibility as NBC does. They could keep 8 sitcoms or cut it down to 6 and they could renew Nashville AND Body of Proof if they wanted to do so. I seriously doubt they will eliminate the DWTS results show. That just sounds like fans wanting to squeeze their favorite shows into their fantasy schedules.

  • Fred

I agree with you about BOP. It should be renewed for next spring again. However it does skew much older than other ABC dramas. So it must be a tough decision for ABC. I read somewhere about tax credits for BOP, which would make more affordable. But that didn’t work for that ABC police drama, Detroit something.

  • Sarah

Because of all the hate between Revenge and Scandal fans, as a Revenge fan I decided to try and watch Scandal. Watched the entire thing in 3 days. Great show!

  • Fred

Yes I think ABC should cancel the pointless DWTS result show. Its so padded anyway. DWTS simply doesn’t perform good enough to take up 3 hours of slots. I much rather see the higher rated Bachelor take up 2 hours in the fall.

  • Tommy

Body of Proof is up for the Tax Credits if renewed for a fourth season which will make producing the show a lot cheaper.

  • Leoben Conoy

I swear I am going to break something if ABC doesnt renew The Neighbors!!!

  • Bret

I hate it when people say things like this but if they cancel The Neighbors, I am done with ABC. Most of the shows they have put anywhere close to Modern Family (four that I have really enjoyed) have now been canceled or are about to be. That is enough for me, I am out.

  • karin

ABC needs to cancel BOP and Nashville before…

  • The End

Modern Family is a quality lead in for any show. If you can’t capitalize on a solid lead in show, you don’t deserve to be on any network really.

  • The End

It will be. And I’m sure the Once spinoff will be picked up once work on the Pilot has been completed soon.

Marvel also have done a beautiful looking Once Upon a Time book about Regina and The Huntsman, I love the artwork.

So much effort going into the Once Upon a Time name that I would say beyond any doubt in this universe it will 1000 percent(Yes 1000) come back for a third season.

  • Dan

SHIELD will air at 8pm Thursday guaranteed.

My belief is ABC will renew both Nashville and Body of Proof.
