CBS' flurry of renewals a few weeks ago took all the interest out of the remaining CBS drama renewal or cancellation decisions, so all that's left for the cancellation bear in these weekly posts is getting some headlines in place that will get some search engine love once frantic fans start searching for their previously canceled shows.

CSI:NY is now certain to be canceled. However, delusional fantasies over how it might return seem to grip many of our commenters, as well as entertaining many others, so have at it in the comments with your scenarios explaining how CBS will manage to keep CSI:NY if you're game.

Here's the bear's delusional scenario:

CBS' Les Moonves is able to open a portal to an alternate universe where CSI:NY airs at 9pm Friday, while in our universe another CBS drama airs in that timeslot. Viewers with the latest set top boxes are able to view or DVR either, or both.

I'm sure our commenters can do better than that.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Thanks! I couldn’t think of anymore of CBS’ development to add mid-season.

I am also hoping for The Good Wife on Friday’s. I think it could work well with Blue Bloods.

  • Fake Me Out

I will go on record now as saying that CSI:NY will be coming back … I do so solely for the ‘naner naner’ rights & privileges should it come to pass. :-)

  • Carlos

I think the show can pull low 3’s or high 2’s on Fridays. It would boost Fridays’ lineup. Ashton’s paycheck would be worthy.

  • Fake Me Out

    @Bill Gorman

“I don’t get the confirm you are not a spammer box. How do you know I’m not lying?”

That’ll just have to be our little secret.

I feel the box is misleading … I may in fact be a spammer who’s taking a break to read up on TV ratings … the box should read “Confirm you are not spamming us right now with this post”

PS: Wanna buy a swiss watch or generic boner pills? Ask me how!

  • dazza

they should renew it just because they have put other shows there and they haven’t pulled in the ratings that csi ny has so maybe 13ep order to finish off in a good way then bring in a new show for mid season

  • Stephen

Nothing really up in the air with CBS. Only interesting things now are how they schedule their renewed shows.

I’m thinking either H5-0 or Mentalist moves to Friday, TGW probably stays on Sun maybe moves to 10. New dramas Mon & Tue @ 10 or move Elementary to one of these slots, one new sitcom Mondays, Wednesday leave alone again possibly – not sure about CBS Wed.

Thu – possibly move Elementary to premiere new drama. Friday maybe another new show @ 8 or just leave it reality. Saturday is whatever, Sunday may stay same but if Mentalist moves then probably some other show gets moved to Sunday. Possibly if Mentalist goes to Friday H5-0 would go to Sunday.

  • MichaelChickless

Go CSI: New York! ;-) :-)

  • merrrrraanga

my senario: Gary Sinise busts into the network execs office and just stares at ’em real mean for like 45 seconds and they give in to his demands. and they bring stella back. first episode starts with her shooting sela ward in the face. ok, i’m done.

  • Alex J

I know you don’t guess production/cast negotiations. But if Criminal Minds and/or 2.5 Men can’t agree upon renewing their cast does that open up the door for CSI:NY and/or Rules of Engagement? Is that the 1% chance of them being renewed?

Or will CBS just take this opportunity to air another new drama or comedy?
This scenario makes me think Rules would get another 13 episode season because the chances of one of the two new comedies failing is pretty high.

  • Percy

Bill, why did people keep saying that they will put Hawaii Five-0 on Friday when it gets better ratinfs then the good wife and the mentalist?

  • Jamie

Not trying to answer for Bill but CBS usually tests things late in the season which they plan to do next year. HAWAII FIVE-0 has a Friday repeat scheduled.

  • Dan

Rules of Engagement wil defintiely be cancelled. The finale is meant to wrap up the series and the shows actors’ contracts are up.

Its done but it had a good run

@Dan S – I personally believe CBS may move THe Mentalist to Friday at 9, CSI to Friday at 8 and move Hawaii 5-0 to Sundays at 10 and Elementary to Mondays at 10. That way they can increase comedy time, and not have to air a new drama on fridays. They can instead air a new drama Wednesdays at 10 and Tuesdays at 9 (NCIS Red) while NCIS LA moves to 10pm Tuesdays.

If CBS doesnt expand comedy time then Person of Interest will stay at 9 and a third drama will air at 10pm Thurs but then CBS only has room to have 1 new comedy in the fall unless the new HIMYM season airs midseason.

  • David

Why has CBS scrambled their reruns this week? Are they testing out different timeslots for shows for next fall, including a comedy block Thursday at 9? Tonight they have flipped NCIS to 8 and NCIS: LA to 7. Tomorrow night Elementary is on at 10 in place of CSI. Thursday they have comedy reruns at 9 followed by POI at 10. And Friday, H50 replaces Blue Bloods at 10.

  • Dan

My schedule with and without the comedy expansion

    Without the comedy expansion

    8:00 Amazing Race
    9:00 The Good Wife
    10:00 Hawaii 5-0

8:00 Two and a Half Men
    8:30 Mom
    9:00 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 Mike & Molly

    8:00 NCIS
    9:00 NCIS Red
    10:00 NCIS LA

    8:00 Survivor / HIMYM (Dec)
    9:00 Criminal Minds
    10:00 NEW DRAMA

    8:00 The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 NEW COMEDY
    9:00 Person of Interest
    10:00 NEW DRAMA

    8:00 CSI
    9:00 The Mentalist
    10:00 Blue Bloods

    Undercover Boos could return midseason

    With the Comedy Expansion

    8:00 Amazing Race
    9:00 The Good Wife
    10:00 Hawaii 5-0

    8:00 HIMYM
    8:30 Mom
    9:00 2 Broke Girls
    9:30 Mike & Molly

    8:00 NCIS
    9:00 NCIS Red
    10:00 NCIS LA

    8:00 Survivor
    9:00 Criminal Minds
    10:00 NEW DRAMA

    8:00 The Big Bang Theory
    8:30 NEW COMEDY
9:00 Two and a Half Men
    9:30 NEW COMEDY
    10:00 Person of Interest

    8:00 CSI
    9:00 The Mentalist
    10:00 Blue Bloods

With a comedy expansion CBS would only have room for two new dramas, which they could pull off should they have 2 midseason replacements as dramas. Still with the comedy expansion they can air all 5 returning comedies between Mon and Thurs as well as premiere 2-3 new comedies. Its more likely that they dont do a comedy expansion but that would mean one of their returning comedies would have to return midseason (and the most likely candidate would be HIMYM airing a short final season Wed at 8 when Survivor ends)

  • Dan

I meant to have Elementary air 10pm Mondays on both my schedules. I predict May 2014 will be a bloodbath likely cancelling both The Mentalist, The Good Wife and maybe Blue Bloods or Hawaii 5-0 (But CBS may keep both for an additional season for more syndication benefits)

@David – I wouldnt look into it too much, its possible CBS may test something out for the Fall but they may just do a random schedule scramble.

  • Anyanka

For all of these schedules, what about Unforgettable? It will be airing Sundays at 9:00 PM starting July 28, and if it runs all 13 episodes straight through without doubling for any 2 hour blocks, it would finish on October 20th. October 27th is a little late in the season to premiere whatever else ends up there. The Good Wife premiered the last week of September in Fall 2011 and Fall 2012.

I suppose Unforgettable could have both a 2 hour premiere AND a 2 hour finale, allowing CBS to premiere a show on October 13th. I’m wondering what you all think of this. I know CBS doesn’t normally save returning dramas for midseason, but this is a rather odd scheduling quirk.

  • DenverDean

CSI is NOT moving to Fridays – it is still basically tied with Elementary as top demo at 10 p.m. Why would CBS lose that now? I predict the following Tuesday/Wed.

Tuesday: NCIS, NCIS: RED (is between two established series), CSI or CM

Wed: Survivor, LA, CM or CSI

  • Graham

    Here’s my delusional fantasy –

Networks often renew their low rated shows for a 4th season to get to the 88 episodes. There is also precident for a very low rated show to be renewed for a short final 5th season to get to around 100 episodes (Fringe!).

So, The Good Wife is renewed for a shorter final season to get to 100 and is moved to Friday 9pm and CSI:NY gets a shorter final season to replace TGW in the same slot in early 2014.

Delusional? yes, but not quite as delusional as some suggestions???

  • The End

@Delusional? yes, but not quite as delusional as some suggestions???

Delusional is quite common place with some schedule predictions, I wouldn’t worry about it. You’l fit right in here :)

Joking aside, why not have a go at making your own schedule like some others have? If you have a few minutes of free time, I wouldn’t mind giving an opinion on your thoughts.
