Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 14, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult* canceled 0.35
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.60
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries*  0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.93
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.95
Supernatural renewed 1.50
Arrow renewed 1.60
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.97

Like many of the cancellation bear's weekly posts at this point in the season, the CW predictions haven't changed (other than Cult being officially canceled last week) and the bear's just going over old ground.

Although the cancellation bear disagrees with Bubble Watch over the fate of Beauty & The Beast (enraged fans, please direct your rage appropriately), there is no disagreement about the fate of The Carrie Diaries. It's still likely to be canceled.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    The Tomorrow People

    Hart of Dixie
    Top Model/Selection or Oxygen

    The Hundred

    The Vampire Diaries
    The Originals

    Beauty and the Beast

Selection and Oxygen, Oh Sit!, CBS comedy pilot and/or ROE and/or Who’s Line.

The CW should make the jump into comedies either this year or next. It is the perfect opportunity with all the great CBS comedy pilots out there.

  • Maddie

I just read all the posts, and again I vote for BATB!!! Glad it is moving to another spot and getting away from the big established shows like White collar, Grey’s Anatomy, and Person of Interest. Hope it follows Arrow. that would be a great pair. The fans for BATB are growing and will continue to grow next year!

  • Dan

I happened to catch the last episode of TCD and noticed during a commercial break that they referred to the episode simply as “the finale” noticeably leaving out the words “season” and this being the first, and there were no cliffhangers, I don’t think even the producers or crew of that show are expecting a return. I do hope beauty and the beast gets renewed and has better rating next season so I don’t have to bite my nails on the likelihood of its return.

  • Danielle

For those that gave up on BATB in the first few eps, I suggest giving it another chance. It really has evolved a GREAT deal since the start of the series. They have shifted the type of show it is, as well as the pace of the show. It’s very entertaining, and would appeal to men and women with it’s smart balance of action and romance.

  • Ember

I just want the originals, oxygen, and the selection to be picked up. At this point I view both tcd and batb as dead weight. I’m not saying this so all of you fans can attack me, I simply see it as truth. Can anyone tell me what the chances are of the cw picking up 5 new shows vs 4 or 3? I mean, it doesn’t seem like they can afford to. But they can’t afford to go deeper down in ratings either. I think it would be better if they did 5 new shows. That way you atleast have 50% chance of success. Whereas if they keep these shows or even hod I don’t see their ratings getting any better.

  • Claudia

“I simply see it as truth.”

You would rephrase it as “your truth” or your opinion.

@JUNE… Why do you think BATB has a loyal fan base?

obviously, Beauty is not a ratings winner… It’s Nielsen audience is miniscule, however that audience shows up week in and week out and I tend to believe TVD has no influential power on Beauty. Maybe people will catch up on it during netlfix before the season 2 premiere. I’m not a fan of this show however CW in general is trying to make a step in the right direction, I just hope some of these pilots that are picked up prove this theory. I want the CW to succeed post Dawn Ostroff.

That is one sad looking bear.

  • Ember

It’s not my opinion. It’s a fact that all of them are doing poorly. I don’t watch any of those so I don’t really have an opinion on them

  • Melanie

I’m almost with you on your schedule I also believe that Mondays will be all new and I hope that those are the two pilots that make the cut

    — I think Tuesdays are a big question mark though — If they cancel both TCD AND BATB then there will be another new show on Tuesdays and their fall launches on Tuesday don’t seem to fare very well. So I’m thinking that they will start out with established programming — and only launch three fall shows and move something to Fridays for a midseason launch on Tuesdays.

    8pm- The Tomorrow People
    9pm- The 100

8pm- Hart of Dixie /Selection or Reign at midseason

    @Bill and/or Robert

Quickie question. Let’s for the sake of argument say that in a few years time the CW lost most of it’s affiliates and moved over as a sub-channel on the CBS digital broadcasts as well as being available via cable, satellite, etc … would you still cover it like you do now or would you drop it? And if you drop it would it be because a) the numbers are too hard to come by and/or b) you would no longer class it as a true broadcast network? Just curious. Txs.

Actually Ringer was the one that won all of the polls not TSC. Before it was cancelled the show came in third place of E! Save One Show Campaign while TSC didn’t even make it to the top 5. It won TV Guide’s Fan Favorite Guilty Pleasure while TSC didn’t win anything. After it was cancelled the show won Star and Show You’ll Miss The Most from the E Golden Remote Awards and it went up against TSC and the majority of these polls/awards. B&TB did win New Favorite Drama and it trends every week during or after a new episode aired. Also you really can’t compare TSC and B&TB’s fanbase because B&TB hasn’t been on a ton of polls. Just now Jay Ryan who plays the Beast was in the top 4 for Alpha Male Madness but thats really it. Also, the two leads of the show have moved on, you can catch Britt Robertson this summer in the tv series Under the Dome premiering on Monday, June 24, 2013 at 10PM on CBS and she has 3 movies coming out. Phoebe Tonkin will be on The Originals next season. They don’t have time for TSC. If B&TB is cancelled it doesn’t have to worry about “expensive cost of special effects, and dramatic locations” that led to TSC being cancelled.

  • Bizarro

Nevermind, Ringer won the poll awards and TSC won the general polls.

  • RS

In the H of D and Beauty and the Male Model wars, I did the math from the January till last week’s episodes. Each has aired 8 episodes – averages: H of D. 5.75; B&MM 5.88.

  • Dave

    E!Online is reporting that:

Nikita and Hart of Dixie are likely renewals.

    Beauty is a straight toss-up

The Carrie Diaries is likely to be cancelled with a VERY SLIM chance of reporting. The Insider claims that CW Execs are not happy with the ratings. :D

    Oh and CULT is dead.

  • Billy martins

    @Billy Martins

so you think CW will only premier 2.5 new shows next season, one of them for only half a season and behind the low rated Beauty and one of Friday after Nikita?
