Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 14, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult* canceled 0.35
90210 canceled 0.50
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F) :) :) :) :) 0.60
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries*  0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) 0.93
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) 0.95
Supernatural renewed 1.50
Arrow renewed 1.60
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.97

Like many of the cancellation bear's weekly posts at this point in the season, the CW predictions haven't changed (other than Cult being officially canceled last week) and the bear's just going over old ground.

Although the cancellation bear disagrees with Bubble Watch over the fate of Beauty & The Beast (enraged fans, please direct your rage appropriately), there is no disagreement about the fate of The Carrie Diaries. It's still likely to be canceled.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Surprised at the alleged strength of Reign. Come on, the 100, you need to be picked up! Along with the Tomorrow People!

  • Charmed

I hope The Tomorrow People gets picked up.

  • Jared

The Carrie Diaries was a really cute show but I don’t see how the CW would justify renewing it for a second season. BATB has been a sleeper hit for the CW. I don’t think anyone would have thought that this show would have lasted a full season let alone the fact that BATB has such a loyal passionate fanbase that continues to grow. Even the amount of positive media attention has increased since the pilot. Looking Looking forward to the 2nd season pickup.

  • Dave

I might get in trouble for saying this but I don’t know why Brandy has it out for Nikita so much.

Everyone posts some negativity to a certain extent but this ***** really has it out for the show!

She needs a beat down by both Maggie and Lyndsey and maybe then she’ll stop! :D

  • Restless

I do hope you get in trouble Dave because you shouldn’t have started. Don’t attack other posters. Doesn’t matter what shows they prefer or dislike, that is no reason to wish violence on them or call them names.

  • Funeral Dinner

I know Nikita is treated differently because it’s a Friday show, but it should be pulling 0.5’s to be considered for a 4th season. It’s constant 0.3’s and rare 0.4’s are terrible.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Brandy: “My point was that the reality/game shows, repeats, specials do the same ratings as a new Nikita for a fraction of the cost.”

Not if the studio is offering the show to the network for a low license fee to get to syndication levels of episodes. You seem incapable of understanding that.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Funeral Dinner: Nikita has made the same number of .4 and .5’s as it has .3’s. It’s season average is .36 currently.

Syndication rules apply, which means as long as 1) the CW has nothing better to put on that night – which it doesn’t, and 2) WBTV offers it for a low enough license fee to make it profitable for the CW (or at least break even or a small loss), the CW will continue to air it to get to syndication.

Speculation that WBTV will accept a shortened final season is just that: speculation and rumor.

@Jared BatB is not a sleeper hit…its not a hit at all..its fighting to survive..and would have been canceled if aired last season..Not even HoD is a sleeper hit for CW. If it was pulling .7-8 all year i would call it a sleeper hit

  • Adrian

    @funeral Dinner

by your logic HOD and BATB should be pulling 0.7-0.8 to be considered for a next season. CW standarts lower every season.

Surely they were expecting these ratings when they renewed Nikita for a third season. It’s not rocket science. Anyone with common sense can figure out that if they renew a show doing 0.4s it will be doing 0.3s the following year.

  • Betty Prat

Beauty and the Beast needs a renewal it’s a great show!!!

  • why

i do NOT understand the appeal of BATB? it’s one of the worst shows i’ve ever seen while shows like emily owens, with a decent script, is cancelled. smh.
