Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 7, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.38
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show  0.78
Raising Hope* renewed 0.80
The Mindy Project renewed 0.83
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.03
American Dad renewed 1.13
Glee      (renewed 4/19) 1.14
New Girl renewed 1.14
Bones renewed 1.15
The Simpsons renewed 1.24
The Following renewed 1.40
Family Guy renewed 1.44

With effectively no suspense at all left with Fox's renewal and cancellation decisions, the cancellation bear is forced to continue to highlight the obvious.

Last week it was the obvious renewal of Glee, this week, the even more obvious cancellation of Touch. Kiefer, as FOX's Kevin Reilly said, there were worse things that could have happened to your show than it being put on Friday, it could have been canceled last spring. Instead, Touch is certain to be canceled this spring.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Poor Kiefer. Tough luck since 24, but he’s getting tons of commercial voice over work in The Great White North. The Following lost me a few weeks ago; Bacon deserves better.

  • bob

i was looking forward to watch kiefer on tv for the next years

  • Dan

Kiefer will move on after Touch, unfortunately drama overcrowding last season meant only Touch was renewed and its horrible timeslot mean that FOX had no faith in the show and it was just used as a Fringe time share.

Not sure why FOX hasnt renewed Glee yet, I guess they will wait until the upfronts, and with Ben & Kate’s eps airing in the summer its the first season in a while where all episodes of all shows have aired.

Hopefully FOX will have better luck with dramas next season but this year was just an adjustment season for FOX for its first year without House.

Dramas in general are doing pretty badly across all broadcast networks. There aren’t any really big epic/important dramas anymore, the closest ones we have now are Once Upon A Time and Revolution (I’m a big fan of both), but even they are lackluster compared to the hype/discussion/quality/ratings of 24, Lost and even Heroes.

Hopefully next season will be better for all networks for dramas.

  • Wright

Fox should bring Fringe back.I haven’t watched Touch since the middle of season 1, but I thought it was a good show. I just had too many shows at the time.

  • Rebecca

They’re going to air some Ben and Kate reruns at midnight on Saturdays (EST) in the late spring/summer – I wish they’d just air the rest of the new episodes instead so I could finally see them on hulu.

Touch is good; I hope the next three episodes wrap up the series well enough as a proper ending.

  • MichaelChickless

Maybe Jack Bauer can have an arc on The Following next season?

  • Fake Me Out

Nothing to do with Fox but it just occurred to me …

    1. Steven Colbert has a fear & loathing of bears;
    2. All TV shows eventually end;
    3. Is being caught by the Cancellation Bear Steven’s worst nightmare? Is he losing sleep at the thought? Is he driven to succeed just to stave off the inevitable?

Nothing much to decide about FOX either. Though similarly to ABC I do wonder what they will do with their non-animated sitcoms. They have RH, NG, and MP and probably could get one new sitcom for the fall but would FOX really retry the 2 hr comedy block on Tuesdays with 75% of the same shows as last fall? They will likely keep NG Tue @ 9 and if they do have a new sitcom launch it right after. As for RH and MP I’m not sure. Maybe they air Thu after X-Factor? Monday after Bones? Interesting to see what FOX ends up deciding.

  • Fred

    Fall 2013 FOX:

    All animation

    New Drama

    Raising Hope
    New Sitcom
    New Girl
    Mindy Project

    X Factor-2 hours

    X Factor

All unscripted. Cooking contests, perhaps a FOX newsmagazine. Anything cheap.

So just 1 new 30 min sitcom and 1 new 1 hour drama. Not much room on FOX. The Following will return later in the season. Bones might still be strong enough to help a new drama on Monday.

  • Jonay

Isn’t FOX in the same Boat as The CW because they don’t have shows for Friday @ 9:00pm???

  • Fred

    @Jeff (Canada)

I agree with you. OUAT and REVOLUTION are the most epic dramas we have today.
OUAT has the potential to return to greatness again though. Season 1 and certain eps of season 2 have reminded me of LOST quite often. A huge compliment, because LOST is my all-time favorite drama.
REVOLUTION is entertaining, but not in the same league as LOST.

    Possible Fox Fall 2013 Schedule…

    Brooklyn 99
    New Girl

    The X-Factor

    The X-Factor Results
    The Wild Blue

    Kitchen Nightmares
    Raising Hope
    The Mindy Project

    The Simpsons
    Bob’s Burgers
    Family Guy
    American Dad

  • CraveRecords

I wouldn’t be surprised if Fox kept Tuesdays the same (with a new show at 8:30), but I’d like to see New Girl/New show/Mindy Project/New show and Raising Hope on Fridays.

  • The End

On the bright side Kiefer Sutherland has been rather outspoken about his desire to do a 24 movie, even commented in interviews about how he did a rather physically intensive running scene in Touch that he never thought he had in him at his age. And as long as he’s able to do stuff like that he wants to do more 24.

  • CrimTV

    @Jeff (Canada)

It’s been a bad season for all new shows this season, I mean only a few have really become hits (Revolution, The Following, Arrow etc)

  • JacobYates

With the Following now pulling ratings identical to Terra Nova, Touch bombing, and Mob Doctor having bombed, I bet FOX wishes they still had Terra Nova.

  • CrimTV

But The Following is no where near as expensive as Terra Nova was!

  • Fred

    @Crim TV

    So true!

  • Cass

I miss the rampant Fringe speculation on these Fox posts. Those were quite exciting. :)

A small part of me is bitter that Fox went with renewing both Touch and Fringe, rather than paying for a full-season of Fringe and hope they are in the throes of the regret now. Sigh, I kid I kid. That they renewed it for syndication purposes for a final 13 is already miraculous.
