So much for the cancellation bear devouring rookie drama Hannibal with a nice Chianti and some fava beans. The show's second episode ratings increased vs. its premiere. The bear doesn't care that it was against repeats on CBS and ABC, a 1.7 rating (or a 1.6, or a 1.5, and likely lower) points to certain renewal on the ratings train wreck that is NBC.

"Still dodging predictions for many NBC sitcoms?" you say. "Yes!" says the bear. Fear not, as gunshy as he is on his biggest source of prediction error this season, the bear will go with up or down predictions on every show no later than May 7.

A note to those in denial, there has been no formal announcement that Smash has been canceled, but when a show is sent to Saturday during its run, it has been canceled. There will be no formal announcement.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the NBC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ie. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

@Rob60990 – NBC likes the show, it could pair well with Community 8-9 Thursdays. And even though it flopped, guess what EVERY other new comedy on NBC has flopped this season worse than Go On.

    The New Normal
    Animal Practice
    Guys With Kids
    1600 Penn

All dipped to at or below 1.0

Its doubtful with this many new comedies NBC wouldnt renew 1 of them to Save Face. Thats what makes me sure NBC would save Go On, because its unlikely the only comedy they would renew is Parks & Rec. Looking at the big picture of NBC’s comedies this season, Go On actually didn’t do as badly as people thought. Everything flopped.

  • Tommy Mickens

The New Normal will be renewed. Bank on it!

  • Oliver

I slightly hope NBC renews The New Normal because it would be hilarious seeing how low it goes next season. It’d be the new Smash.

I have heard there may be a Friends return season? What impact does that have on whether Go On comes back? This way, they get Matthew Perry, but probably a higher rated show as well. (Although this wins them no love from me, I hated Friends. Give me Seinfeld or Frasier any day, when it comes to late-90s sitcoms)

  • Dima

what NBC should do next season:

    8:00 – The Voice
    10:00 – New Drama

let a New Drama enjoy the laid-In from the voice.

    8:00 – The Voice
    9:00 – New Comedy
    9:30 – New Comedy
    10:00 – Parenthood

The single-camera comedies this season didn’t work after the voice.
they should try multi-camera comedies instead. In addition, there aren’t multi-camera comedies in this slot on other networks.

    8:00 – New Drama
    9:00 – Law & Order: SVU
    10:00 – Chicago Fire

The comedies in the 8;00 slot didn’t work. They should try a drama instead.
The rest of the night is doing soild numbers and there is no need to change it for now.

    8:00 – Parks & Recreation
    8:30 – New Comedy
9:00 – New Comedy (Michael J Fox Comedy)
    9:30 – New Comedy
    10:00 – Revolution

Lunch the three best single-camera comedies in your main comedy night.
the Michael J Fox Comedy should be strong enough to anchor the night,so it gets the 9:00 anchor slot.
move Parks & Recreation to 8:00 and let it run against The Big Bang Theory instead of lunching a new comedy against it.
Revolution is not strong enough to anchor a night.
move it to the Thu 10:00 slot and let it fix that slot.

    8:00 – Dateline
    9:00 – Grimm
    10:00 – New Drama

Dateline moves to 8:00 and gives Grimm a soild Laid-in.
New Drama goes to Friday so that Grimm would have companion show.

  • Oliver

Both those schedules kill Parks and ensure that NBC can’t promote Thursday nights as all new.

I also don’t think they should premiere 5 new comedies in fall. I don’t think NBC can successfully promote that many shows at once.

Personally, I think they should premiere fewer shows in fall but give the shows they do launch more promotion, especially since the Olympics should provide a platform for launching shows at mid-season.

  • todd35

I don’t watch any of the real dark drama’s. There seams to be a trend now, and it is scary to think that millions of people like to watch shows about seriel killers. I use to watch Criminal Minds but that got too intense for me. I still watch CSI, but many times I’ll fast forward through the first segment. This is one reason why I like Vegas. It has crime to investigate but isn’t near as dark. Plus it is based on the real life of Sheirf Lamb.

I didn’t actually think the pilot for Hannibal was all that compelling, but it definitely improved in the second episode. Will keep watching for Gillian Anderson before making a decision whether to stick around.

  • Jon

Why isn’t Go On dropping from a toss up, it’s ratings this late winter early spring have been horrific.

  • Charmed

If Heroes is brought back by MSN, will it air on NBC? What is the likelihood that it actually will be brought back?

  • Oliver

    NBC’s scripted average is horrific.

  • Spen B

    Fall Schedule

    8:00 The Voice
    10:00 NEW DRAMA

    8:00 The Voice
    9:00 NEW COMEDY
    9:30 NEW COMEDY
    10:00 Revolution

    8:00 Whitney
    8:30 Go On
    9:00 Law and Order: SVU
    10:00 Chicago Fire

    – Yes, I realize 8PM will tank

    8:00 Parks and Recreation
    8:30 Community
    9:00 Grimm
    10:00 Hannibal

    – Grimm’s ratings are too good for Friday, and it should be partnered with Hannibal

    8:00 Rock Center
    9:00 Dateline
    10:00 Parenthood

    – Parenthood doesn’t really fit anywhere else on the schedule, and could probably pull decent ratings on Friday.

  • Darkridedan

    Up All Night. :( ?
    Cracks me up!

  • Oliver

    @Spen B

So Grimm’s ratings are too good for Friday, yet Parenthood’s aren’t? Parenthood consistently outrates Grimm.

  • Ellen

Either there’s a problem with your methodology or with your prediction. Deception at 91% of the scripted average should give it at least four smiles as you have repeatedly explained networks renew shows at 90%+ of the scripted average.
