How to Live With Your parents for the Rest of Your Life

The third episode of How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life) airs tonight. It's the first time the show has aired without a new episode of Modern Family as a lead in.  (ABC is airing two new episodes of Suburgatory, followed by a repeat of Modern Family.) We'll find out if the show is a standalone hit, or has merely been riding the coattails of ABC's top rated program. The show premiered to a strong 2.9 adults 18-49 rating. Last week it fell to a still-solid 2.5. (It should be noted that Modern Family declined week-to-week as well.) So how do you think it will do tonight? Make your prediction then explain your reasoning in the comments.

  • Remote Patrolled

Episode 1 was great, episode 2 was dreadful…

  • Stuart Pitt

It scored a 2.9 when Modern Family scored a 4.2
    A 2.5 when Modern Family scored a 3.8
The last time Modern Family was a repeat it scored a 1.8, which is my prediction for tonight’s new episode.

Same as The Neighbors and Subutgatory.

    Save The Neighbors. :-)

1.9 or 2.0, but wouldn’t be surprised if lower

@David No, I wasn’t suggesting that Family Tools would live on in the Fall. I just think a least from a preliminary review it looks superior to How to Live and I believe will be more successful, thus garnering more attention from the network in scheduling, promos etc in the remainder of this season. How to Live will become the unwanted stepchild relegated to the back burner. How to Live has pedestrian writing, unlikable characters and the premise boxes it in a corner. The chemistry between the little girl and Sarah Chalke is excellent but is an opportunity wasted because the lead writer/exec producer is too egotistical and interested in mirroring her real life nearly 100% rather than developing the strengths of the show and enhancing that chemistry through the story line. I generously voted above at a 2.0 because you will still have a few stragglers giving it a third and final chance. After this week, expect its ratings to drop significantly.

How to Live etc is not funny. Stupid characters. Like a grandmother who can’t figure mother granddaughter. Her daughter was 5 once. Did she give her daughter coffee at night. DUMB. They are complaining that it is 11:30 am and the kid is up and the grandparents are not up yet. STUPID. Panties in a lunch bag for the kid. OH IS THAT FUNNY HA HA. I gave it a couple of times watching it. I knew from the first episode that I wasn’t going to like it. But gave it a chance. Brad Garret hasn’t had a good part since Everybody Loves Raymond. They always give him a part to play stupid people. Also why doesn’t Modern Family have a new episode?

Why would ABC make that same mistake again?

  • Bob

    @Crim TV,
Why would ABC make that same mistake again?

Oh the question Why? I love it! Why does ABC schedule new episodes of their Sunday shows every single year without fail and wonder why their shows drop like a rock. Why is certainly an interesting question for ABC.

  • Marius

1.8, since ABC won’t let anything non-Modern Family touch that 9pm time (even if MF is a repeat.)

@Jeff: Could it be the Grandmother is on drugs or getting scenile? And it’s a variation of the “Mother/Father knows best” trope of family comedies — the Daughter has more discipline than her own parents while raising her child. And I don’t think Brad Garrett is portraying a stupid person in this show. Socially awkward and forgetful, sure, but not stupid.

    @ CrimTV

Because they love killing their comedies, they killed Cougar Town last year, they killed Happy Endings and Don’t Trust the Bitch in Apt. 23 this year, looks like Suburgatory might be in the same situation next year if they move it off Wednesday, which they probably will.

I figure 2.2-2.3 It won’t fall that much because there will still be a large Modern Family audience watching the repeat. Many folks are creatures of habit. They watch a show on a particular day at a particular time. A few don’t watch the repeat but probably 70-75% do. If they stayed for “How to Live” before, they’ll do it again. For those that don’t watch the repeat, they’ll either come back to “How to Live” at 9:30 or DVR/watch it another way if they’re interested.

  • Matt

The show experienced a respectable fall – falling from 8.4 million to 7.3 million an from 2.9 to 2.5. If MF was the lead-in, I’d expect a 2.4 and 7.1 million. However, without it and instead an MF repeat, I suggest maybe a 2.0 and 6.7 million. We’ll see.

@David At least Family Tools isn’t so formulaic like How To Live that it turns people off from watching it. I mean really just look at ABC’s pilots this year and they ALL center on women. Family Tools doesn’t center on a woman and it has nothing to do with the lead character moving back in with their parents like so many other ABC’s pilots this year and last year. I think those reasons turned me off from watching it all together and usually I would give ABC’s shows on wednesday a chance but this one is far too formulaic. To top it off, it’s not even a family show and isn’t advertised like one. That’s the closer for me. Give me Apt.23, Happy Endings, or The Neighbors any day over this show.

@Geo Carter You hit the nail right on the head sir. Good job. I couldn’t agree more. How To Live With Your Parents=FORMULAIC TRIPE

Oh and I’ll give it a 1.5 for tonight

  • glen

1.8 or 1.9, will get renewed though, then next fall move to a timeslot without Modern Family support and suffer because of it.

  • tv_viewer

    My predictions:

Suburgatory season finale: 1.8 (1 hour average)
    Modern Family (repeat): 2.2
How To Live With Your Parents: 2.0
    Nashville (repeat): 0.6
    Survivor Caramoan : 2.6

Suburgatory without a new The Middle might sink but because it is the season finale, tonight’s episode should match last week’s ratings.

Modern Family repeats do better when original programming airs at 8 pm. So tonight’s repeat should do better than 1.8.

If a Modern Family repeat can keep Apt 23 afloat in April 2012, then a Modern Family repeat should duplicate its feat in April 2013.

John Cochran should be able to handle Jane Levy competing against him for the whole hour. Survivor 26 should maintain its ratings from last week.
