The average viewership increase From DVR Viewing ranks which of the top broadcast shows [by Live+7 viewers] had the largest absolute increase in average viewership by DVR between the Live + Same Day and Live + 7 day ratings measurements.
Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+Same Day ratings?  No.  Click here to learn more.

Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

Will we ever know how Revenge did in Week 27? It was said that it didn’t make the list because the episode was counted as a “special,” but since it wasn’t, I was hoping we could actually see its DVR numbers.

  • Eric Robinson

Those are high DVR numbers for Hannibal…. 1.6 to 2.7? *whistles* That’s pretty good!

  • Justin121

That’s really good for NBC shows:

    Grimm, Hannibal, Chicago Fire, Revolution.

The Following, Castle, and Scandal also have a big audience.

  • Jeff R.

I’ve noticed networks, especially NBC, really pushing viewers to “watch it live” during promos for their scripted shows.

  • Skylar James

    lol at TCD

  • Alan

Good numbers for Smash, it seems like all the Tuesdays fans still watch it, but they prefer to DVR it now.

“I’ve noticed networks, especially NBC, really pushing viewers to “watch it live” during promos for their scripted shows.”

Gives you an indication of how much ad skipping during DVR playback is hurting them. Earlier “The DVR is our friend” PR nonsense to the contrary.

  • Lane

    @Jarrod

TVD was a repeat that week.

  • Wright

Great for Grimm!!! Also glad to see Revolution, The Following, Hannibal,Elementary, Nikita, Bones and of course Supernatural make the lists.

  • Michael

Way to go: Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, and The Voice! KILLING IT!!!

  • mayhem

What Happen to New Girl and American Idol New Girl is always in top five for live +7.

  • Michael

    Mayhem,

I could be wrong, but I haven’t seen American Idol on this list this season.

  • MichaelChickless

    THE FOLLOWING!

The Following, Revolution, and Elementary are the only shows in the top-10 of all 3 lists.

  • SB

If you think about it, ads should really say “Watch it live if you are a Nielson family, otherwise watch it whenever you want.” I certainly don’t have any better solution to offer to measure ratings but since there are so many alternatives now to watch a show, if people know when they watch doesn’t really matter then watching and skipping through commercials may seem like a viable alternative to many and that can’t be great for advertisers.

  • Michael

    @SB,

Most people know that their viewership doesn’t count. People have lives outside of TV, which is why DVR is so great. They can watch it whenever they want. People have jobs, an education to obtain, etc. Watching shows LIVE isn’t a priority for most people.

  • Marc

    Hey Bill,

it’s weird up here in Canada we are hearing on CTV.
“Don’t forget to set you PVR” when the commercial comes on promoting.

I commented the other day when I heard it “That’s weird to promote PVR’ing it instead of live”

It was for “the following” playing on CTV

  • Melissa

Once Upon a Time averaged a 3.3 during its fall season (9/30/12-12/2/12), and its currently averaging a 2.4 for its winter/spring season (1/6/13-present). That’s an in-season decline of 27%! You’d have to be delusional to say that a decline of almost 30% is from “bad scheduling”.

  • Doug

Where did Happy Endings end up? Weird to see it not on the list when it was at the top of the list last week.

  • http://tvbythenumbers.com Bill Gorman

“If you think about it, ads should really say “Watch it live if you are a Nielson family, otherwise watch it whenever you want.”"

As they might, if the networks weren’t specifically prohibited from marketing to Nielsen families.

“it’s weird up here in Canada we are hearing on CTV.
“Don’t forget to set you PVR” when the commercial comes on promoting.”

Fox has done the same for The Following in the US.

Perhaps they have market research suggesting that’s the way to go in that case.

    @Melissa

Did you mean to post that in the other article?
