Body Of Proof  was probably the cancellation bear's biggest miss last season. He had it "certain to be canceled" and it was renewed. Its ratings this season are even more woeful (as well as relative to other ABC shows), but if it was the California production tax credit that saved it last season, it might do so again. This season, having been burned once by the show, the bear's not making it "certain to be canceled". Still, he'll make a final up or down guess on it, and other uncertain shows, on May 7.

Rookie sitcom How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest Of Your Life) ratings took a dive last week. The bear currently has it as "likely to be renewed", but that might change after this week's results. Stay tuned.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Well of course How To Live would…it didn’t have Modern Family as a lead in. It pulls the same ratings as The Middle with no lead in so I’d say its certain to be renewed

  • DonJ1973

From the reports I read, Body of Proof does well in overseas sales for ABC and that was one factor why it got renewed fr season 3. I know this site proclaims shows are dead if they don’t get 2.0 or higher, but when this show was first created and introduced 3 years ago, I read it’s intended primary audience was older women. Not surprised the show has an older audience.

  • JacobYates

For one week. I predict it falls to 1.6 or lower this week as it’s without MF once again. The Neighbors should then move back to Likely Renewal and How to Live… should drop to Toss Up.

This is my ABC Schedule for Fall 2013:

    8:00-Once Upon A Time

    8:00-SHIELD(new drama)

    9:00-DWTS Results

    10:00-(new drama)

    8:00-The Middle

    8:30-(new drama)

    9:00-Modern Family

    10:00-(new drama)

    8:00-(new drama)

    9:00-Grey’s Anatomy

    8:00-Last Man Standing

    8:30-Malibu Country

    9:00-Shark Tank

Midseason: Suburgatory,BOP and another new comedy

  • Just Desserts

The Neighbors should be renewed. Its young Artist Awards nomination gives it an edge over How to Live…

  • David

Yeah….it’ll probably fall next week which will justify toss up smilies

  • Fred

BOP has a chance for survival. 10:00PM shows don’t need to score a 2.0 anymore.
Obviously this particular show benefits ABC in ways we are not privy to. I read somewhere about possible tax credits .

  • Fred

Its getting to a point where 10:00PM shows averaging in the mid 1s are considered kind of safe. In the recent past this was not the case.

  • Bill Gorman

” I know this site proclaims shows are dead if they don’t get 2.0 or higher”

No one *writing* for this site clams that. What commenters claim is there own business.

  • iMember

I think Revenge is a sure renewal now given recent news. While it’s sad to see Mike Kelley go, it seems ABC doesn’t want to let the show go.

  • Dan

I predict renewal for Body of Proof, only because with Private Practice gone and 4/5 dramas flopped, BOP doesnt look too bad especially relative to its lead in. I can see a midseason renewal for it or if ABC tries out a 10pm Tuesday show ths fall and it flops, ABC can use BOP to swoop in and fill the timeslot.

I also predict renewal for How to Live With Your Parents joining Modern Family, The Middle, Suburgatory and Last Man Standing thus leaving Family Tools, The Neighbors, Happy Endings, Malibu Country and Apartment 23 all cancelled.

Hopefully USA will pick up Happy Endings.

  • Wright

Renew OUAT already. It’s the only show on this network that I watch.

  • RyanCanada

i love BOP, HE, Revenge, i dont see HE getting renewed but i hope USA picks it up.

  • TVDude

    @ Dan,

Agree completely with your predictions. We shall find out soon, but your pretty much dead on with what I believe will happen.

  • Just Desserts

Those predicting renewal for How to Live… and cancellation for Malibu Country and The Neighbors are crazy. It barely had a season this year and its partner show, Family Tools is definitely getting cancelled.

As far as I can remember both The Neighbors and Malibu Country had decent ratings on their first five episodes. That should be enough!!!

  • KarenA

How can Happy Endings get any ratings when ABC falsely identifies the show so that it doesn’t get recorded on DVRs???? They did one week of promotion for the show, stuck it in the worst time slot and then wonder why it can’t get ratings? ABC – YOU SUCK.

  • David

    @Just Desserts

Please could you stop going on about The Neighbors constantly! I understand your passionate about the show and you don’t want to see it cancelled, but do you have to mention it in every post!

Anyways, The Neighbors nearly dropped as low as Malibu Country. Now consider this:

Malibu Country – airs on a Friday, late premiere and its still done well
How To Live – fair enough – airs post Modern Family, but has stayed stable without a Modern Family lead in
The Neighbors – consistently dropped its Middle lead in, pulled 1.5-1.8 despite airing in the high rated Wednesday block, and generally weighed the block down

  • David

Yes but they did give it a decent lead in in the fall, and while not totally compatible it dropped its audience from DWTS. Consider it luck it even made it to 3 seasons. It easily could have been cancelled back in season 1.

  • Just Desserts

I bet How to Live… is going to drop like a meteorite this week with no new episodes of Suburgatory, The Middle, or Modern Family to bouy it afloat. It will probably get the B!tch treatment next year (pun intended). :)

  • Sel

What is it about ABC that they always cancel my favorite shows? I don’t watch MF, GA, OUAT, Scandal, HTLWYP, Castle and they all are certain to be renewed, but when it comes to my shows they are either to be cancelled or already are. Farewell The Neighbors, you’ve been sincerely hilarious and I’m gonna miss ya!
