Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 21, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult* canceled 0.35
90210 canceled 0.49
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F)     0.60
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries*  0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) (renewed 4/26) 0.92
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) (renewed 4/26) 0.96
Supernatural renewed 1.52
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.96

The cancellation bear has had Nikita predicted as "likely to be renewed" all season. Once the show was renewed for a third season (the current one) a fourth season was required to satisfy the syndication gods. Now, with just two weeks before our final guesses, the change to "certain to be renewed" gives the bear an easy headline.

There have been various reports circulating that Nikita would get a short final season of less than 22 episodes. The bear both ignores such reports (as he does all rumors), and doesn't care. The bear doesn't try and predict how many episodes will be ordered.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Considering how bad HoD is doing lately it should be cancelled, but it has the two season factor.

  • HV

I paired The Hundred with Hart of Dixie because I believe that The Hundred will be the best new series, so it doesn’t need as good of a lead-in. I may switch The Selection and The Tomorow People though.

  • Bliss

Yeah ok makes sense. I can’t wait to hear what the cw picks up

    @ Charmed
    @ Claudia

    Thank you. :)

“If I hadn’t been repeatedly attacked for saying the show sucks and more importantly is likely to be canceled, I would be a lot less rabid about stomping on it.”

Ummm, are you REALLY dumb enough to NOT know why BATB fans attacked you? Your comment says is all! Seriously dude! Give your head a shake! It’s only natural for a fan of a show to defend it when under attack. I know you understand this because you yourself become a “dumb, fanatical fan” attacking posters who think Nikita sucks and is likely to be canceled or get a short season. Sorry but any attacks you’ve gotten from BATB fans “You brought it on yourself”.

And yes you do have a right to watch BATB and comment your opinion, as do I and others have the right to comment on Nikita’s low ratings and inevitable cancellation. It’s a two way street my friend.

“No, you keep your mouth shut because you don’t care about Nikita. I started watching BATB because it was a genre show and I always hope genre shows do well. It didn’t because it was crap. So now I call it what it is.”

Actually, I tried to watch Nikita for most of the first season and even tried to give it a chance in the second but I gave up “because it was crap” and every episode felt like it was a repeat of the one before it.

“I don’t, either. Until moron fans start attacking me and making fantasy nonsense about the show’s ratings. Then all bets are off.”

Given Nikita’s ratings, …..I think they speak for themselves.

    “Yes, I am.”

Well, now. That’s something to be proud of!

    Death to Nikita!
(sorry other Nikita fans. My intention is only to point out RSH’s double standards)

    LOL @ Danielle!

  • Brandy

EW says HoD,BATB Likley renewals,CD kinda sorta Likley to be renewed and Nikita depends on how how many slots are avaiable but right now it’s not looking pretty

  • Brandy

Zimbio says HoD,Nikita are good bet for renewal, Carrie Diaries,BatB are tossups

  • tasha

that schedule is pretty good @Shaniqua but we haven’t heard anything on company town being a contender. maybe replace that with reign.

  • Charmed

I hope HOD rebounds next week, I’m getting scared now!

  • ActualGuru

Good to see the peons still think that The Carrie Diaries isn’t going to be renewed. This site has been up since 2007 but, humorously, I’d assume it was the first rodeo for most of you.

  • david

I think it makes since to have Nikita as a short finale season and i a a fan of the show. Ten to 12 episods should be enough to end the story. I love
Beauty and the Beast and i really want it to have another season and it seems to be geting a .6 lately and hope it gets the tonight as well.

  • david

@Danielle i agree with you. Why does rsh keep on attacking BATB anyways. Nikiata should end after a short finale season and BATB should get a full season renewal.

  • Jeff

Nikita is not ending strong like I had hoped it would. Up until recently I was pretty sure it would get renewed. Now I got my fingers cross while I wait for the news. Here’s to hoping Nikita’s final episodes bounce back. Really love this show.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Jeff: I don’t know about Nikita not ending strong. There are still four episodes left and I’d say the situation the characters are in is pretty desperate.

Renewal is all but certain. The rumors of a short season are nothing else but rumors. Ignore them until it happens. This show has significant syndication potential and WBTV is going to want more episodes, not less.

Death to BATB! Everyone go to the “Don’t Save Their Show” poll and vote BATB! It’s already the standout show in the poll at 16%. Let’s push it up to 100%! :-)
