Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 21, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult* canceled 0.35
90210 canceled 0.49
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F)     0.60
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries*  0.73
Hart Of Dixie :) :) :) :) (renewed 4/26) 0.92
Beauty And The Beast :) :) :) :) (renewed 4/26) 0.96
Supernatural renewed 1.52
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.96

The cancellation bear has had Nikita predicted as "likely to be renewed" all season. Once the show was renewed for a third season (the current one) a fourth season was required to satisfy the syndication gods. Now, with just two weeks before our final guesses, the change to "certain to be renewed" gives the bear an easy headline.

There have been various reports circulating that Nikita would get a short final season of less than 22 episodes. The bear both ignores such reports (as he does all rumors), and doesn't care. The bear doesn't try and predict how many episodes will be ordered.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

The CW’s shows used to premier BEFORE the rest of the broadcast networks. The CW should go back to this. Premier the WHOLE schedule in August and break the seasons into two parts 12 & 12. Air part 1 between August and November. Air Nikita, Hart of Dixie, Beauty and the Beast, and Supernatural until February, and premier ANTM, Blink, and Company Town in March.

    8 – The Selection (NEW) (24-episodes)
    9 – The Hundred (NEW) (24-episodes)

    8 – Beauty and the Beast (22-episodes)[Fall] / Blink (13-Episodes) [Spring]
    9 – Supernatural (22-episodes)[Fall] / Company Town (13-Episodes) [Spring]

    8 – Arrow (24-episodes)
    9 – AMAZON (NEW)(24-episodes)

    8 – The Vampire Diaries (24-episodes)
    9 – The Originals (NEW) (24-episodes)

    8 – Hart of Dixie (22-episodes) [Fall]
    9 – Nikita (22-episodes) [Fall]
    8-10 – America’s Next Top Model (13-week cycle) [Spring]

Great schedule, but I would but The Hundred Monday @ 8:00 and save Company Town for midseason instead.

  • Chellsea

  • Kate

Please let there be a season 2 for Beauty And the Beast!! :)

    9:00 – Hart of Dixie (22 Episodes) (October 8th – May 18th)
    8:00 – Arrow (23 Episodes)(October 9th – May 14th)
    9:00 – Supernatural (23 Episodes)(October 9th – May 14th)
    8:00 – The Vampire Diaries (22 Episodes)(October 10th – May 15th)
    9:00 – The Originals (23 Episodes)(October 10th – May 15th)
    8:00 – Nikita (23 Episodes)(October 18th – May 9th)

Amazon has been pushed back until next year’s pilot season.

  • jason50

Are Ashley,Chellsea, and Kate the same person? At least Kate remembered to push the “caps lock” button.

  • jason50

….and Chellsea’s message wanted to be more original than the other two.

  • Lisa

CW won’t be to smart if the split SPN and Arrow up. Finally got a night that works why screw with it.

  • Richard Steven Hack

Lisa: Agreed. I don’t see them splitting Wednesday at all. It makes more sense to stabilize Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and work on fixing Monday and Tuesday with new shows.

They’re going to have to go back and fix Wednesday and Thursday within the next couple of seasons anyway as those shows start to age and lose ground. So leave them for now and work on developing new shows to fix the other two nights and then replace the aging shows.

Neither Arrow nor Supernatural are strong enough to aid in the development of new shows, anyway. A 1.0 rating is not exactly gangbusters. I think they’ve learned that from the failure of Thursday night after TVD which is why The Originals was created.

I watched the “pilot” episode of TVD tonight and it was pretty good. We now know why Hailey is in the mix as a regular on The Originals. The guy playing Marcel was pretty good, too. If they can keep that quality for 22 episodes, The Originals will likely be a decent performer.

  • Melody

Why do so many people split the Arrow and Supernatural combo in their predictions for next year? I understand the basic principle of using a stronger performing show to help launch others, but when you have a night that works and works well for this network, why the hell mess with it? Right now I’m loving Wednesday nights. I get to enjoy Winchester Wednesdays (Supernatural being my favorite show and all) and the cherry on top is Arrow (with Criminal Minds and Chicago Fire on other networks). Wednesday is my hot hunks night; and personally I think that’s handy for hump day. These shows also fit so well together in terms of feel and tone. Personally, I don’t believe that the CW will be splitting them up, because it would be ridiculously stupid to do so.

  • CrystalBall

Splitting Arrow and Supernatural makes sense :
Neither HoD and BatB will be a decent lead in, so you can use Arrow to lead in a new show and pair Supernatural with a self starter show (like the tomorrow people). So this way you won’t have any night with only new shows and/or you’ll know those 2 shows paired with Supernatural and Arrow won’t be paired with a low rated show.

There is 2 counter argument imho :
-> They’ll have to move Superntural yet again
-> They’re splitting a night who works fine

  • Josh

The problem with that is the audience may not match and then you stuck with no nights that work. Now What after that? A ton of Supernatural fans watch Arrow so I wouldn’t be quick to move it.

  • frank5869

Network mafia, Hollywood mafia. Fake statistics. Nielsen ratings are a joke indeed.
It’d doesn’t matter how good a tv show really is nor the actual number of viewers, the statistics are a huge fake.
And as this Nikita bad remake tv show demonstrates all that matters is who is behind the series, what are the producers, what are the agreements at CEO and managers level and so on.
    It’s all about dirty business.
It’s just business mafia. Just like that of bankers.

  • ActualGuru

It’s quite fitting that you have Hack in your username, Richard, as you know absolutely nothing about how television works.

  • Dillan

The CW has renewed Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie and has ordered The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals to series.

  • Matthew Chapman

    @Bill Gorman

    Another Table Update

Hart of Dixie and Beauty and The Beast have both been renewed

1.It’s not looking good for The Carrie Dairies is it?

2.Get Ready for teeth gnashing From Fans of The Secret Circle

  • Mae

    @Connor Murdock

Why only give SPN 22 episodes (when it has proven itself to pull decent numberd) when you are giving new shows, who are completely unproven, 24 episodes?

    No logic there.

  • Holly

The CW has renewed Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie

    Though, interestingly, not Nikita…
