bears waiting

Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 21, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.38
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show  0.75
Raising Hope* renewed 0.80
The Mindy Project renewed 0.83
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.02
American Dad renewed 1.11
Glee renewed 1.14
New Girl renewed 1.14
Bones renewed 1.14
The Simpsons renewed 1.24
The Following renewed 1.38
Family Guy renewed 1.44

With Glee being renewed for two more seasons (anti-fan teeth grinding alert!), the things the cancellation bear can highlight in his weekly Fox Renew/Cancel post keeps shrinking and becoming more obvious!

There were reports last week that The Cleveland Show had been canceled, but they were from a marginal source, and Fox issued a non-surprising "not canceled, just no more episodes will be ordered" statement. The bear predicted the show would be canceled months ago. Whether last week was the magic day or not is completely moot. It certainly will be by the end of this season.

Now, just one more headline to fill next week. It'll be Touch again!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Either way, it’s cancelled no matter how you see it. Maybe that site just knew you needed a headline Bill so made it for you!

Touch? Again? Oh boy, can’t wait! (just kidding)
One more week to go and these headline terrors will be part of the past

  • Mark

I enjoyed Cleveland. So, when it goes I wonder if they move back to Quahog.

Hope the show gets picked up by Adult Swim or Comedy Central.

  • Dan

Well FOX has created a lot of suspense

Cleveland is as good as cancelled whether FOX wants to admit it or not. Odd that they havent admitted it yet and the show has not only been out of production for a year but they have been burning off episodes left and right.

With all shows’ fates decided its just Touch thats left and with 3 more episodes left to air by May 10, it will be just a 2 season 26 episode wonder.

  • Wright

I can’t believe Glee got renewed for 2 seasons. What a waste of time and money.

  • MichaelChickless

Nothing to see here. Move along.

  • Layton

Wasn’t Tv Line who broke the scoop about the Cleveland Show? Or did they report what someone else said? I can’t see how you can call TV Line a marginal source when it is run by Michael Ausiello who is a very knowledgeable person in the tv industry.

  • tvlog

Glee has been renewed for two seasons! The Cleveland Show runs against 60 Minutes! Bob Burgers should be the one on chopping block! The Cleveland Show never has gotten respect! Bob Burgers is terrible show! Glee loses audience from The X Factor or American Idol! And it gets not one season renewal! Fox gives Glee two seasons! The Cleveland Show gains audience more Glee loses audience! Cancel it! Fox! I watch Nine clock Block! Family Guy and American Dad!

  • TVWatcher

I think the networks are sometimes afraid they’re going to lose audience for the remaining episodes of an officially certified lame duck show versus one that maybe some delusional people have a glimmer of hope for.

But of course hand drawn animation needs a lead time significantly greater than live action shows and the time has long passed for it to be on next season’s schedule.

Cleveland show did well enough in the early ratings to get the syndication deal early, but then lagged in the ratings so 88 episodes is the natural time to cut it off.

Hopefully this means we get Bob’s Burgers to 88 and beyond!

  • mrkareemruiz

    still better then family guy

  • Bill Gorman

” Or did they report what someone else said?”

  • The End

I honestly don’t know why Fox won’t openly kill off Touch. Perhaps they’re waiting to announce it alongside a 24 movie? Kiefer Sutherland has been outspoken about his desire to come back and do more. That’s grasping at straws I know, but come on, the show is doing so badly it should of been killed off weeks ago..

  • Layton

Ah ok I just remember seeing it on their site, didn’t really read the article.

  • brutony

The Cleveland Show has sucked from Day One, but apparently it did fairly decent in the ratings, following Family Guy. Then they tried to have it stand on its own, and of course, it collapsed under the weight of Clevelands fat gut! This show should have been whacked 2 seasons ago! Give Rallo his own show, the ONLY decent character on it-but I do like to look at Roberta, lol!

  • Ultima

I think the networks are sometimes afraid they’re going to lose audience for the remaining episodes of an officially certified lame duck show versus one that maybe some delusional people have a glimmer of hope for.

Do you think that a failing show will draw additional viewers if they announce that it’s being canceled? If not, there’s no reason to announce a cancellation.

  • Phil

I hope Touch can find another network to run on because I want the story to continue in season 3!!

  • Jonay

If president Barack Obama called up a network such as FOX and ask to renew a show such as The Cleveland Show would the network have to?????

  • Anthony

Why was Glee renewed? It had a pretty low couple of months and only went back up around a month or so ago. The new format is not working out, the new characters are clones which was more than predicted. If Fox loves Ryan Murphy that much why did they not truly redevelop the show? With a select group graduating and moving to NYC. I know contracts were involved but I predict half of them would have ran the moment they could… Their is no reason to keep the two locations story format no one cares about one or the other. Just cancel it…

  • Jack Bauer

The Cleveland Show and Touch better get canceled soon.

  • Dan

@Anthony – Itunes sales, syndication, continued popularity, who knows but we all know that the 6th season will probably be the show’s last.

@Jonay – If the president personally funded new episodes of The Cleveland Show then I cant see why not.

@Jack Bauer – 3 weeks, Touch will be cancelled and their may not be an official announcement for The Cleveland Show but we know its done.

@The End – Why would FOX announce the shows end now when they ave the upfronts to leave the show out. They dont have to announce anything now, but anyone with a brain knows Touch is dead.

@Layton – Tv Line posted what someone said on a blog and while it may not be “official”, the lack of renewal, the time it takes for animated shows to produce new episodes, the burning off of episodes, the full animated schedule for next season, and the fact that the show has been out of production since early 2012 are all indications that the show is done.

I am surprised FOX didnt renew Cleveland for 13 more episodes, it would be a waste to not get it over 100.
