With Glee being renewed for two more seasons (anti-fan teeth grinding alert!), the things the Cancellation Bear can highlight in his weekly Fox Renew/Cancel post keeps shrinking and becoming more obvious!

There were reports last week that The Cleveland Show had been canceled, but they were from a marginal source, and Fox issued a non-surprising "not canceled, just no more episodes will be ordered" statement. The bear predicted the show would be canceled months ago. Whether last week was the magic day or not is completely moot. It certainly will be by the end of this season.

Now, just one more headline to fill next week. It'll be Touch again!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Anthony
    Why was Glee renewed?

Because its ratings are better than average for FOX (especially amongst Adults 18-34).

It had a pretty low couple of months and only went back up around a month or so ago.

What? Outside of two holiday airings (Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day) and the two high rated airings before the season started, Glee has been up and down in the 2.0-2.6 range the entire season.

    3.1, 2.9, 2.4, 2.6, 2.4, 2.1, 1.5, 2.2, 2.2, 2.0, 2.6, 2.1, 2.2, 1.7, 2.4, 2.0, 2.0, 2.4, 2.1

  • JD

I have a feeling FOX gonna make a deal with Adult Swim or TBS to save it.

  • Brad

“I am surprised FOX didnt renew Cleveland for 13 more episodes, it would be a waste to not get it over 100.” – Dan

That’s really how I look at it. It would be a waste to not have it go into a 5th season as you want 5-7 seasons of a television show for syndication as it becomes easier to market to buyers for syndication.

My bet is that FOX is just looking to cheapen the show or possible alternatives, but the alternatives can’t be looking so impressive or FOX would have canceled The Cleveland Show. FOX could also be looking to sell it off to Adult Swim where its currently being syndicated.

  • Nick

What Fox should do for 2013-2014:

    Mon-

    Tue-

    Sat-
    8: Fox Sports Saturday

    Sun-
    7: The OT/ Cops (20 episodes)

Midseason – The Mindy Project (13 episodes), the remainder of Kitchen Nightmares’s season.

    Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    @Nick,

    My issues:
    1. I was in favour of a Glee move to Friday if it was to be a final season. However, 2 seasons on Friday is just too much for this young skewing show, it would be below 1.0 too soon to be acceptable. They need to keep it in a weekday now. Also, I don’t understand your insistence in moving Kitchen Nightmares to a weekday when Fox needs a weekday real estate so badly to develop new dramas.

    2. What happens if Gang Related is successful on Mondays?

    3. I don’t think FOX would hold TMP for midseason, although it may be a possibility.

This is what I would do, since I haven’t published it yet:

    Monday
    Bones
    The Following/ Human

[I think the following should help out FOX in the fall rather than spring since it is when fox is weakest and it needs as much help as possible to promote new shows, etc.]

    Tuesday
    Delirium or Boomerang
    New Girl
    New Comedy

    Wednesday
    The X-Factor/ Idol
    The X-Factor/ Idol
    New Comedy

[As I've said, they need as much real estate as possible and the talent shows ratings are not that high anymore that this is unjustifiable. If it bombs, just get them longer again, no big deal]

    Thursday
    The X-Factor/ Idol
    Glee

[I don't like it anymore than you do, but it really has to keep happening for one more year]

    Friday
    Raising Hope [burnoff for sydication]
The Mindy Project [Raising Hope needs to be burned off with something else and I really don't think FOX should commit to a third season of mindy anyway, ratings are too low for a syndication journey]
    Kitchen Nigthmares

So: 2 new dramas and 2 new comedies

  • Fred

X Factor and IDOL still rate higher than most other programs. Until they drop to below average, FOX will continue to milk them for what their worth. Can you blame them?

  • Chris

Guys, Fox has already reached syndication deals for Cleveland. It has been sold to TBS and Adult Swim, and with that done, there’s no reason why FOX will give Cleveland a shortened fifth season. Also, 88 is the magic number for syndication, not 100, and Cleveland will hit that by the end of this season.

  • Connor Murdock

Here is what FOX should do next season:

    MONDAY
    8:00 – Raising Hope | 8:30 – The Gabriels (NEW)
    9:00 – New Girl | 9:30 – The Mindy Project

    TUESDAY
    8:00 – Dads (NEW) | 8:30 – Friends & Family (NEW)
    9:00 – Hell’s Kitchen (Fall) / Glee (Spring-10 eps)

    WEDNESDAY
    8:00 – The X Factor [2-Hour Edition] (Fall)
8:00 – So You Think You Can Dance [2-Hour Edition] (Spring)
    8:00 – American Idol [2-Hour Edition] (Summer)

    THURSDAY
    8:00 – Sleepy Hollow (NEW-22 eps)
    9:00 – Glee (Fall-12 eps) / Enlisted (NEW)(Spring-13 eps)

    FRIDAY
    8:00 – Bones [Final Season] (Fall-15 eps) / The Following (Spring-15 eps)
9:00 – To My Assistant (NEW) (Fall-15 eps) / The List (NEW)(Spring-15 eps)

I say renew American Idol but have it for Summer and try out SYTYCD in the Spring. Keep the two hour format but only on one night. None of these shows are strong enough to try and use as lead-ins for new shows.

The problem with FOX is none of their shows can support another as aside from a comedy night none of the time time slots have an anchor. However good shows can stand on their own.

  • Nick

    @omabin

I was in favour of a Glee move to Friday if it was to be a final season. However, 2 seasons on Friday is just too much for this young skewing show, it would be below 1.0 too soon to be acceptable. They need to keep it in a weekday now.

We differ in this thinking because you put Glee on Fridays to die, while I think it might actually do decently there. It could get a showing behind one of the early September X Factors and then move to Fridays to increase exposure about the move. The Thursday slot right now is killing it, IMO. It’s going up against the powerhouse that is Grey’s and Idol isn’t that big of a lead-in anymore. Also, I think moving it to 8 pm would be beneficial for it, as a teen-oriented show. Not including any year-to-year decline, I think it would be getting about a 1.7. If there’s a usual 9% year to year drop, it would still only be around 1.5/1.6, which isn’t that bad.

Also, I don’t understand your insistence in moving Kitchen Nightmares to a weekday when Fox needs a weekday real estate so badly to develop new dramas.

It’s really just scheduling filler, but a reason I have KN behind X Factor is that I think it needs more exposure. A big problem with it this year is that in a newly cluttered Friday, after it was shuffled around, people just forgot about it and it dropped like 50%. Putting it behind The X Factor would help raise attention, which is never bad for a series. While I don’t see it immediately going back to its post drop 2.0′s, it should be able to do reasonably well, and then carry some of those viewers over to its new home after The Following comes in.

What happens if Gang Related is successful on Mondays?

Well, I would guess that one of it or Delirium wouldn’t work out, as simply new shows don’t do that well. Whichever one of the two does better goes in the Tuesday @8 slot. If by a miracle both Gang Related and Delirium do great, then the lesser one a) goes behind Glee if the comedy block fails or b) gets shelved until a slot opens up.

    ===

As for your schedule, I like it a lot, except for the Glee debate which I don’t want to discuss over and over.

  • Chris

It’s a shame. American Dad is the best of the shows of course, but I enjoy the Cleveland Show far more than Family Guy now.

My guess is that if (and it’s a big IF) The Cleveland Show does get renewed, it will only air 13 episodes after the NFL season ends, otherwise, it could end up on Adult Swim.

  • Sailingsam

Following is good but so annoying to always see Kevin Bacon beaten up and one step behind the villains…Glad Glee is renewed!
