Tonight Show’ ENCORES TOP ‘KIMMEL’ ORIGINALS FOR WEEK OF APRIL 15-19
With ‘Kimmel’ Airing First-Run Telecasts on Four of Five Nights, Jay Leno Rebroadcasts Deliver Bigger Audiences in 18-49, 25-54, 18-34 and Total Viewers

Fallon Encores Best ‘Late Late Show’ Originals in All Key Categories and Top ‘Nightline’ Originals Head to Head in All Key Demos

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. — April 25, 2013 — Encore telecasts of NBC’s “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" have delivered bigger audiences than ABC's mostly original "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and all-original newsmagazine "Nightline," respectively, in adults 18-49 and other key measures during the late-night ratings week of April 15-19. Note that “Kimmel” aired a rebroadcast on Friday, but was otherwise in originals last week.

The "Tonight Show" encores also beat CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman" rebroadcasts in every key ratings category — adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, plus total viewers — and Fallon encores topped CBS's "Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson" originals in every one of those key measures.

Tonight Show” rebroadcasts generated bigger audiences than ABC's mostly original "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in adults 18-49 (1.001 million vs. 962,000), adults 25-54 (1.269 million vs. 1.250 million), total viewers (3.010 million vs. 2.802 million) and even adults 18-34 (332,000 vs. 297,000).

While Leno and Kimmel rounded to a tie in 18-49 rating for the week (0.8 each), 'Tonight' prevailed over ' Kimmel' by a 4 percent margin in 18-49 viewers.

For their head-to-head half-hour, Fallon rebroadcasts out-delivered ABC's original "Nightline" in every key demo — adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. Fallon’s margin in 18-49 viewers for that half-hour was 18 percent (704,000 vs. 599,000).

Leno has now delivered bigger 18-49 audiences than "Late Show" for the last 22 weeks in a row and topped "Kimmel" for 13 of their 15 head-to-head weeks. In total viewers, Leno has out-delivered "Late Show" for 26 weeks in a row and "Kimmel" for 15 of 15 weeks.

Jimmy Fallon has now generated bigger 18-49 audiences than "Late Late Show" for 27 of the last 28 weeks and prevailed in total viewers for 24 of the last 26 weeks. Versus "Nightline" in their head-to-head half-hour, Fallon has out-delivered the ABC newsmagazine for 15 weeks in a row in viewers 18-49 and 10 of the last 12 weeks in total viewers.

Versus the same week last year, Leno was up 16 percent in 18-49 viewers (1.001 million vs. 866,000) and up 18 percent in 18-34 viewers (332,000 vs. 282,000). Fallon was up 25 percent in 18-49 viewers (651,000 vs. 519,000), up 34 percent in 18-34 viewers (265,000 vs. 198,000) and up 15 percent in total viewers (1.525 million vs. 1.330 million).

At 1:35 a.m. ET, encore telecasts of "Last Call with Carson Daly" were up versus the same week last year by 8 percent in viewers 18-49 (370,000 vs. 344,000) and up 43 percent in viewers 18-34 (164,000 vs. 115,000).

    Eh, I don’t like Conan whatsoever, so any joke he makes could be absolutely hysterical and I would still roll my eyes and not laugh.

    I thought Conan got a couple good ones in there, but TBH I didn’t LOL at anything. I do think he’s funnier just relying on wit instead of his gymnastics and pantomiming.

    Huge. Conan can be so good when he just does the job. Not a parody of the job, not a version where he constantly reminds you that he’s doing the job, not a detour from the job intended to remind Patton Oswalt fans that he’s cool. Just does the job.

    Fantastic! So pumped to see that.

    Obama fantastic, Conan fantastic, Spielberg excellent, Kevin Spacey can fall off the face of the earth.

    I personally liked Conan’s shot at Huffington Post…a site that is turning into a web version of the Today Show, about 96% meaningless fluff.

    I agree about Fallon’s chicken song. The was way too silly. It was childish really. Something seen on the Disney Channel. I do believe he would be under the wings of NBC executives and so, when they tell him to not do something, he won’t. He won’t refuse like Conan would. That’s a big reason why Letterman decided to stay at CBS and not go elsewhere. He liked how he was given the reins of his show and could whatever he damn well pleases. Howard Stern was absolutely right in telling Conan that 11:30 isn’t what you think it is. At 12:30 you can do whatever you want and get paid for it too, but not at 11:30. At 11:30 they executives all over the place and we know that was a big reason Conan left NBC when he did, he had enough of NBC pushing him around.

    Anyways, Leno never has an issue hearing what the executives had to say (beyond firing him) and I doubt Fallon would either as he seems to be very welcome to advise as Lorne Michaels’ seems to actually produce Fallon’s version of Late Night.

    By the way, I agree with you Gary about Letterman was going to indeed be second in the ratings for simply being an alternative comedian. Its like Pepsi vs Coca Cola. Sure Pepsi is a fine soda, but Coca Cola is the original, the classic, the obvious choice. It has years of history behind it and is easily recognized across the world. Pepsi is just a close alternative.

    In short, the reason why Letterman vs Leno worked so well for CBS, after so many networks tried to compete against The Tonight Show and failed, seems to be the fact the Letterman was non-traditional. Everyone else tried to do the same show Carson was running but why wouldn’t you pick Carson? Its on at the same time and you can be in the know with all your buddies with what happened last night. You don’t feel left out. Letterman was an alternative host who people could get behind because he was that innovative. Now viewers had to make a choice. Sticking to the same old thing or going with something new and exciting. However, in the long run, the classic never gets old and wins the night as Leno has for NBC.

    Also, I think it applied more to Letterman than to Leno in the early 90s. The reason why Leno ended up beating Dave was because of his brand of humor, not his history.

    Chicken bit wasn’t for me, but it lasted a minute and 46 seconds and was fine. Carson did Aunt Blabby and people seem to think he set the standard in American broadcasting. Iron Jay was a pretty silly bit and I loved it.

    I guess the main problem with the chicken bit isn’t that it’s silly but that once they’ve all clucked a line, it doesn’t go anywhere.

    Incidentally, there’s a lot of stuff on the Disney Channel made by the same people who make us laugh hard in late night. They just slap a different label on it and have it delivered by much younger faces.

    When NBC fires Leno in February and Jimmy Fallon takes over the Tonight Show, what kind of reception will Fallon get?

    After about six months to a year’s time in Fallon’s Tonight Show run, I wonder what kind of comments, by NBC we’ll be reading on this board about how well Fallon’s Tonight Show’s ratings are?

    Will NBC endlessly be bragging about how their ratings are up “across the board” from the previous year after Fallon took over the show? Or will they be making excuses or “spinning the numbers” if they don’t meet expectations?

    I think the other networks and their late night shows are looking forward to an untested Fallon 11:30 Tonight Show take-over next February because I think they can “smell blood” on NBC and Fallon’s Tonight Show. Every Network and their show is going to line-up and put their best effort forward.

    IMO, Fallon’s humor is questionable if it has “staying power” over the long haul at the 11:30 hour.

    When Fallon takes over I think the late night landscape might become even more fragmented then it is now.

    But with NBC’s great broadcasting wisdom, I’m sure nothing could go wrong with the upcoming Tonight Show transfer!!!

    Wouldn’t you love to see the contract? That he will be on at 11:35 is probably in ultra-large type on it, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the words “no take-backs from Jay Leno” appears somewhere. Fallon has probably over-lawyered his contract.

    “Jimmy Fallon’s former manager, Eric Kranzler of Beverly Hills-based Management 360, is still smarting after Fallon fired him right before he signed the deal to take over NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” We’re told Kranzler “saw it coming,” but was still “in shock” about it. “They not only worked together but were close friends. [Eric] had really pushed his career,” said a source close to Kranzler, adding, “Eric felt Jimmy got really greedy.” Kranzler and Fallon had worked together on and off since 2003. They split before talks with NBC began, and CAA negotiated the “Tonight” deal for Fallon.”
