I broke down today and checked out the new episodes of OLTL and AMC. Until I can figure out a way to get them on my TV without paying for Hulu Plus I probably won’t again. It just puts too much strain on my eyes to watch on my computer monitor. I do have to say I enjoyed AMC and OLTL more in one episode today than I did in many of their final years.

I was impressed and the number one thing I am impressed with is the writing. I won’t get into any other detail since this is a ratings thread. But I wanted to make this point.

The writing on these 2 web series clearly shows why the daytime soaps have been bleeding viewers for years now. There wasn’t a lot that happened in just these 1st episodes, but the writing stood out to me. The dialogue was smart, hip, crisp and so real. It just fit the characters and sounded more like something you would hear on a primetime soap opera and I not just talking about it being edgy. It was just intelligent and so well done.

I hope that the shows are a success just for one reason that it sends a message to all 4 soaps to step up their game. And sends a message to the networks that they are going to have to quit doing the same old stuff and take some chances.

One of the things I like about YR are the new sets and updates to some of the old ones. Although Adam looks like he’s living in a funeral home and it’s always bugged me how Nick & Sharon are uberwealthy, yet live in these teeny, tiny homes. The tack house? Really? Nick doesn’t even have a full kitchen yet has custody of 2 or 3 kids. As a soapfan I am used to having to suspend disbelief, so I don’t know why that bothers me. Otherwise, enjoying all the daytime dramas right now.

Today OLTL & AMC come back from the dead! YEAH!

  • MBmomof3

@Mike, thanks for the OLTL/AMC reviews. Can’t wait to watch!

@TimsDale4Ever, I agree too many newbies eating up too much airtime on YR. Not that I don’t like the characters or actors, just too much of them and not enough of the CORE!

  • TimsDale4ever

Just watched OLTL and am not sure how I feel about it. Didn’t actually love it, but didn’t hate it. It has great potential though. It was just way too much of that night club thing going on with all the teenagers. I have a bad feeling that that’s not going to be a random thing but that club will be featured prominently in every episode to attract that 18 year old viewer. And would you really be at a club where your parents are. ??? It zipped along quickly though, which is what is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lacking in Y&R. They didn’t spare any expense with the sets — everything looked great which was a shock to me as I thought money would be a problem on the web series. I still can’t fathom that a few ads are going to cover the cost of everything I saw – including actors — and show a profit as well. Who knows — but welcome back. Now if I can just get it on my TV……

  • PatF

Tims…Looking back at how MAB wrote the show versus the character’s behavior now…yes…Y and R is in good shape.

I don’t like all the new faces either. But at least everyone is acting like they should.

If anything is getting on my nerves it’s the other changes like the sets and the music.

I can deal with new faces if the writing is there which it is.

How long have you watched the show?

  • PatF

I checked out both the AMC and OLTL reboots today. Was very surprised…I have expecting the quality of GL right before it left the air.

I’ve never seen either show before so I was trying to be impartial about each.

OLTL is trying to be the hip edgy show, while AMC looks like a classic show to me. The quality of both seemed the same though. What surprised me too was the some of the inconsistent acting by some of the vet names I’ve know. (Won’t name names yet…)

Good first episodes. It’ll be interesting to see what type of viewership they get.

  • Mike

The last I looked AMC is #1 on ITunes and OLTL is #3 on ITunes….that is impressive.

I’m sure it is the novelty of having them back but Soap Opera Network has a lot of posters saying they were so impressed they are giving up their network soaps.

And several of them are saying they are watching them multiple times.

The thing that bugs me is that people are already uploading the episodes to You Tube. It is good for me because I could watch the episodes on my TV via You Tube as my TV has a You Tube app.

But that is the quickest way to get the shows cancelled. Prospect Park will get money if they are watched on Hulu but they get none when people choose to watch them on You Tube.

Just watched OLTL and am completely and totally satisfied. I won’t ruin it for anyone but I will say it was awesome!! Watching AMC now and will agree so far, OLTL is by far more exciting. Dorian and Viki together again!!!! YAAAYYYYY!!!!! The first day’s cliffhanger! WOW!!!! Welcome back!! I am thrilled and ready for tomorrow.

Plus they cuss!! (at least I never heard the “s” word on network TV) And very suggestive scenes we’d never see on ABC. YES!!!!

  • James Michael

Okay, AMC was actually enjoyable. The best thing about both shows is they feel the same. OLTL was edgy and youth oriented but it was the same on ABC. They have more room related to censorship which I find exciting with expectation we’ll see stories using dialogue they could never use on network TV. AMC reminded me of the 70’s/80’s version minus the comedy. It felt true to itself even with the new faces. It felt like Pine Valley. I am positive I will watch both again tomorrow. I had given up on AMC during their last 3 to 4 years so I am encouraged for both shows after what I viewed today.

  • James Michael

The picture quality was excellent. I have my laptop connected to my big screen TV so anyone wanting to see it on their TV’s, it’s easily done. I know Samsung’s and probably most major brand TV’s have connections available for computer output. I’ve been watching soaps online for 4 years now. If you have a high speed connection, you can’t even tell it’s not broadcast TV.

  • MBmomof3

OMG…LOOOOOVED OLTL & AMC! Pleasantly surprised about everything from the sets and wardrobe to the writing and acting. And everything in between! So grateful to all involved. Well worth the wait. Kept me wanting more.

    One happy soap fan :)

  • Mike

James Michael — Did you ever stop to think that not everyone has a lap top. Or the money to afford a lap top.

My computer is a desk top and it is no where near my TV.

As to your the quality on a computer screen or whatever I know that the quality is fine. But I have lost most of my eyesight due to diabetes I have had since I was a kid. I can magnify my stuff to view typing on the computer but I can’t watch TV shows and see them very well. I have to have a large screen TV to do that.

  • Lynn

GH is a lot better than B&B and Y&R. They all better get with a more solid game plan if they want to keep up with OLTL and AMC.

  • PatF

Both CBS shows are doing fine in the ratings. Keep in mind that when both OLTL and especially AMC left the air, they were not doing well. They will not repeat that audience on line, sorry. They reboots were good however, and they have been getting good response on Hulu and iTunes. I’ll keep tuning in.

GH also needs to keep an eye on their ratings. They’ve had a bump under the new team, but even last week they struggled to hit 2.5 million viewers one day.

  • James Michael

For the first time in many years, I was able to watch OLTL, AMC, GH back to back and be thrilled with the results. I think this is really great and would have no problem if GH transitioned to this format. HULU has it set that the 3 shows play back to back anyway. We can breathe a sigh of relief. If the first 2 days are an indication of things to come, we are in for a wonderful ride. AMC was better today than OLTL but I had fun with both. Just the first 2 AMC episodes are better than any of their last few years. I think the Prospect Park/ABC lawsuit is nothing more than planned publicity. ABC is still making money off of this. If there is truly a lawsuit, they need to work it out.

    Long live the soaps!!

I wonder if we’ll see other soap reincarnations if this goes as well as I think it will?

@ PatF It’s funny you say that CBS shows are doing well cause when Y&R ratings started to fall to 4,5 mio viewers everyone said the ratings were a huge disaster, now the are much lower and people say Y&R is doing so well, the soaps are save now… lol I agree that B&B is doing well besides their big ratings gain it’s considerable that it’s by far the most successful soap worldwide, but Y&R doing well? I’d definitely say NO NO NO

@ PatF It’s funny you say that CBS shows are doing well cause when Y&R ratings started to fall to 4,5 mio viewers (when MAB was in charge) everyone said the ratings were a huge disaster, now the are much lower and people say Y&R is doing so well, the soaps are save now… lol I agree that B&B is doing well besides their big ratings gain it’s considerable that it’s by far the most successful soap worldwide, but Y&R doing well? I’d definitely say NO NO NO
Y&R must get rid of the soap killer JFP NOW and fire JG with her cause his days of good writing are obviously over, he’s run out of ideas

  • Jason

Robert: I agree with you. Where is Robert and bring Heather out of that sanitarium!
I’m about to pull the plug on GH myself. Getting too boring. Give Sabrina and Felix a vacation and please send Connie/Kate/whatever along with gloom and doom Sonny into the sunset for good.

  • jonboyelk

I’ve noticed Ron doesn’t seem to show the consistency to his writing on GH the way he did with OLTL. It’s often times erratic. Characters seem kind of one-dimensional. I’m nowhere near ready to give up on it but I hope he reigns it in now that the influx of guest appearances and nurses ball is over.
