The average viewership increase From DVR Viewing ranks which of the top broadcast shows [by Live+7 viewers] had the largest absolute increase in average viewership by DVR between the Live + Same Day and Live + 7 day ratings measurements.
Do the Live+7 ratings tell us anything about a show's renewal prospects we didn't already know from the Live+Same Day ratings?  No.  Click here to learn more.

Definitions:

DVR (Time-shifted) Adults 18-49 Ratings – Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data LiveLive+Same Day (Live+SD) and Live+7 Day. Time shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs.

Live+Same Day(Live+SD) ratings include viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3:00AM local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing.

Live+7 Day ratings include incremental viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

DVR Ratings Increase Past Airdate - How many people watched the show on their DVRs within 7 days following the airdate

Until the 2009-2010 season, we used a show's LIVE program rating or viewership as the base upon which the LIVE+7 day DVR viewing was added. Now, the press seems to be standardizing around using LIVE+SAME DAY DVR viewing as the base for the calculations, so that's what we do now as well.

A question I keep meaning to ask:

Does a much higher than normal increase in demo either as an absolute # or %, over weeks/whole year, make the networks think that maybe if they moved that show they could get better C3 numbers?

In fact, by this token, at least for this week, The Following & Revolution, look to be strong candidates, if this were true.

I realize that Modern Family & TBBT aren’t going anywhere b/c of their actual L+SD ratings, which also takes into the account that Thursday & then Wednesday are best days for ads.

But for some, it might make sense.

BTW, these lists are Top 25, how many “New” episodes are in any given week on avg?

I ask b/c maybe shows like Nashville, New Girl, Glee, maybe even Criminal Minds/CSI could use a bit of a shake up. Though for CBS shows, not sure how & ABC’s best “available” slot is where Nashville is. New Girl & Glee might swap places/nights though.

  • DW

with those numbers , hannibal will be back.

  • MichaelChickless

The Following and Revolution!! The only ones to rank in the top-10 of all 3 lists.

I love staying up late Monday nights trying to figure out which of these 2 shows had the most plot holes in their episodes….

  • DW

this site would explode if NBC renewed smash based on the DVR usage. lol

  • Wright

Great for Revolution, The Following and Hannibal!!!

  • Holly

    @DW,

this site would explode if NBC renewed smash based on the DVR usage. lol

It’s not like the DVR increase for Smash is remarkable or even good. It only gets on the percentage list because its overall ratings are so very bad.

  • ryan

Criminal Minds is number one drama for the week!

  • Remote Patrolled

    Smash season 3!!!! Ha ha!

Seriously though Smash has really found its form these last few weeks. The songs are great, storylines are interesting, Hit List vs Bombshell rivalry working really well.

If the show had aired after The Voice and NBC had stuck with it – who knows?

  • DW

with DVR / on demand i’m wondering , if nets should take burn offs to Saturdays rather than just leave them in limbo til summer. then if it gets an up tic in DVR/ on demand useage , move it back or place it in another time slot. i know a burn off isn’t going to do TBBT numbers but it could use that time to get good word of mouth and give the show a stable audience.

  • iMember

Hannibal has an audience that’s watching, but it needs out of that cursed time slot.

  • Holly

    @iMember,

These numbers are from the second episode, when Hannibal was still doing fine. The timeslot is only the problem if the DVR viewing increases week-to-week when the Live+SD viewing drops.

  • Marc

So Happy Endings only gets a 1.1 and 1.2 even after a full week. I guess they keep forgetting to program their DVRs? Cue the “well young people watch it on Hulu” rebuttals…

  • Sammas

Hannibal increased by a 1.1 as well for its pilot, so will need to wait for another week or 2 to see if the drop could be made up by DVR or not…

  • Samunto

It was clear that Hannibal would be a big DVR gainer.

And ofcourse the heavily serialized series are the biggest gainers.

  • chris23

Much to my surprise Hannibal is a great TV Show. I watched the pilot on Primetime on Demand through my cable carrier, and then the next day I watched two more, and then the most recent yesterday and I must say it is great.

Of course I checked Hannibal out due to the name in which is a horror classic as I did with bates Motel. Both shows are respected horror franchises in which the TV shows are adding that modern day twist and storylines to it. I’m truly surprised at how good Hannibal is though.. I wish it could rebound from its most ratings, as I’m hoping that was due to the NFL draft in which we seen all Thursday Night shows down outside of VD and Scandal..

The DVR numbers are good for Hannibal and Hope it gets a better timeslot if renewed for a 22 episode season 2.

  • MichaelChickless

@chris23 “The DVR numbers are good for Hannibal and Hope it gets a better timeslot if renewed for a 22 episode season 2″

I believe the producers said somewhere that, even if it had turned into a ratings powerhouse, Hannibal would only consist of a max of three 13-episode seasons at best.

  • forg

    yes the middle!

  • DW

if it’s only a 13 ep season , then they need to move Hannibal to sundays at 10 after football.
