In what is an upgrade for Body Of Proof  and a downgrade for How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest Of Your Life) the Cancellation Bear now predicts both as "toss ups" to be renewed or canceled.

Whatever mojo Body Of Proof had last season that saved it when it averaged just 66% of ABC's scripted show average ratings could again save it this season, particularly since it's now averaging over 70% of this spring's ABC scripted show ratings average (a level for which for most shows would mean cancellation).

Sandwiched by repeats, How To Live With Your Parents ratings dove last week to just a 1.5 rating. It'll be surrounded by new episodes this Wednesday in what is likely a make or break outing. If it doesn't rebound, expect a negative prediction on May 7.

Final up or down (no toss ups!) guesses next Tuesday, May 7!

Although it's not that easy to see, the photo is of teddy bears tossed onto a hockey rink in some sort of promotional event.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    I hope and pray that Suburgatory doesn’t get moved to Fridays next season. I know that it will get renewed for a 3rd season (and it deserves to be) but a move to Fridays would kill it’s chances for a 4th season.

    I hope The Neighbors and HTLWYP get cancelled. They both suck!

    I get the feeling that the 4th season equals syndication theory will get Body Of Proof renewed. I don’t watch the show so I don’t care either way, but just sayin.

    Disclaimer for @omabin:

    I saw your comments last week, but didn’t reply because I didn’t want to have 4 different arguments over 4 different schedules at the same time. Say whatever you want now, kay? ;)

    @Marc
    I would call Modern Family an Anchor. It pulls around 3.8-4.2 that is about the same as the Voice.

  • Jon

    Of all the bubble shows, as long as they keep the Neighbors all is well in the world.

  • HV

    @Nick
    What I like about your schedule: LMS Tue @ 8:00. Shark Tank @ 8:00. Primetime in between DWTS Results.
    What I don’t like: Large amount of change. Wednesday has no new shows. It might be better to put a repeat of a more popular show than Body of Proof on Saturdays (though Saturdays don’t really matter that much).

  • Josh

    I would really like to see Revenge, Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy and Happy Endings renewed. I’m not a fan of The Neighbors, but I see it being renewed over Malibu Country….Sony may try to squak out a deal to keep Happy Endins going lets hope so.

  • Josh

    *squeak not squak lol

  • scifi

    Downgrade OUAT already.

  • Marc

    @Layton

    “I would call Modern Family an Anchor. It pulls around 3.8-4.2 that is about the same as the Voice.”

    It’s only on for half an hour. Was talking about shows that fill up 3 hours a week with thosevratings.

  • JacobYates

    @Bill
    Was Body of Proof saved last year because of the sharp rise in its demo towards the end of the year coupled with the tax benefits, or due to its overall viewership?

  • Fred

    @JacobYates

    I read an article in the TV GUIDE magazine a while back regarding the reasons certain shows are renewed (Body of Proof) and others (Harry’s Law) canceled. Both shows had good overall viewership but they skewed old.
    BOP ratings showed momentum towards the end of the season AND enjoyed tax benefits.
    Tax credits didn’t help ABC’s DETROIT *** (forgot the #s) a few seasons back.

  • JacobYates

    @Fred
    Thank you.

    I hope Lucas sees this too. If you still have doubts Lucas, ask Bill or Robert and they’ll tell you what I’ve been trying to.

    My final thoughts on what ABC schedule should be next year…

    Sunday:
    7- AFHV
    8- OUAT (22 eps 11 in the Fall/11 in the Spring, total 22)/OUAT in Wonderland *new* (8-13 eps winter)
    9- Revenge ( 22 eps 11 Fall/11 Spring)/Nashville (8-13 eps winter)
    10- Body of Proof(13-22 eps) possible a new show in the spring like Killer Woman or Westside

    Monday:
    8-10 DWTS/Bachelor
    10- Castle (22 eps)

    Tuesday:
    8- Subergatory (13-20 eps)
    8:30- Spy *new*(13-20 eps)
    9-SHIELD*new* (22 eps)
    10- The Returned*new* (22 eps)

    Wednesday
    8-The Middle
    8:30-Back in the Game *new*
    9- Modern Family
    9:30-HTLWYPFTROYL
    10- *new* Doubt or Murder in Manhattan

    Thursday
    8- Shark Tank (22 eps)
    9- Grey’s Anatomy (22 eps)
    10- Scandal (22 eps)

    Friday

    8-King John
    8:30 Last Man Standing
    9-Shark Tank repeats/ Malibu Country and Bad Management mid season
    10-20/20

  • Matt

    To schedulers, be advised(some have it correct), that Once:Wonderland would air only air a 13 episodes run during a possible hiatus of Once Upon A Time(Or at least from what I understand, and it could be changed).

  • Nick

    @HV

    What I like about your schedule: LMS Tue @ 8:00. Shark Tank @ 8:00. Primetime in between DWTS Results.

    Thanks. :)

    What I don’t like: Large amount of change.

    I know. It can’t be helped, though. I have to move DWTS to Thursdays to get it away from The Voice. Outside of that, I’ve tried to keep the moves to a minimum.

    Wednesday has no new shows.

    That’s a result of the above problem. I can’t move other stuff around a lot thanks to DWTS. You could notice that both How to Live… and Nashville have 13 episode orders, so they could be replaced come midseason.

    It might be better to put a repeat of a more popular show than Body of Proof on Saturdays (though Saturdays don’t really matter that much).

    Body of Proof repeats the same as Castle. It’s the best they’re going to get on Saturdays.

  • Nick

    @Lynn

    My final thoughts on what ABC schedule should be next year…

    It’s a good schedule, but it’s got a few kinks. My thoughts:

    10- Body of Proof(13-22 eps) possible a new show in the spring like Killer Woman or Westside

    If you’re renewing Body of Proof for fall, it’s got to be for 24 episodes, because it would be within ~22 episodes for syndication at the end of the season.

    8- Subergatory (13-20 eps)

    Same as above.

    Tuesday:

    Where is Dancing with the Stars: Results?

    Friday:
    8-King John
    8:30 Last Man Standing
    9-Shark Tank repeats/ Malibu Country and Bad Management mid season

    To me, this is just crazy.
    1) Why move the anchor to 8:30 and have an unproven new show anchor the night?
    2) If you’re not going to have a scripted show at 9, don’t put repeats. Primetime: What Would You Do? does perfectly there.
    3) Malibu Country would flop if it was left for midseason. It would have been off the air for 9+ months!!
    4) Why Bad Management? It’s got little in common with Last Man Standing or Malibu Country, and it’s totally out of ABC’s family comedy brand.

  • P L Sims

    When Malibu Country and LMS was on Friday night, ABC did pretty well in ratings for a Friday night. I believe the two shows and Shark Tank can and will do this again for ABC. After the first showing of MC, I never saw another advertisement for the show on ABC and I saw very few for LMS. Do they not know if you want a new show to gain viewers, it has to be promoted? I hope ABC will bring MC back and get behind it with advertising. Reba is a good actress and can get laughs and an audience-ABC, help her out a little bit and you will have a high rated comedy.

    @DeanW: no. OUAT and Revenge need to be moved from Sundays, and their reality stuff needs to go to Sundays
