In what is an upgrade for Body Of Proof  and a downgrade for How To Live With Your Parents (For the Rest Of Your Life) the Cancellation Bear now predicts both as "toss ups" to be renewed or canceled.

Whatever mojo Body Of Proof had last season that saved it when it averaged just 66% of ABC's scripted show average ratings could again save it this season, particularly since it's now averaging over 70% of this spring's ABC scripted show ratings average (a level for which for most shows would mean cancellation).

Sandwiched by repeats, How To Live With Your Parents ratings dove last week to just a 1.5 rating. It'll be surrounded by new episodes this Wednesday in what is likely a make or break outing. If it doesn't rebound, expect a negative prediction on May 7.

Final up or down (no toss ups!) guesses next Tuesday, May 7!

Although it's not that easy to see, the photo is of teddy bears tossed onto a hockey rink in some sort of promotional event.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, the "old" Fall predictions will carry over.

Want to know what the ABC Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    @Ultima
    A two month break, yes. A three month break, no. Haha. Do you think there is a possibility that the spin-off would air in the summer between seasons on OUAT? Or do you think it’s more likely that ABC moves Revenge to 10:00 and has a new show (in my case, Lucky 7) at 9:00 for 13 episodes, and then it be replaced by the spin-off?

  • Ultima

    @HV
    Do you think there is a possibility that the spin-off would air in the summer between seasons on OUAT?

    No.

    It’s possible that ABC will air both shows back to back, but if they really want to use the spinoff to bridge the gap while the original is on hiatus, then I think that my previous suggestion is the most likely outcome.

    This is seriously an 8-week span on Sundays next year… Golden Globes, NFC Championship, Grammy Awards, Super Bowl, Olympics, Olympics, Olympics, Academy Awards.

    I know ABC wants to counterprogram, but it just seems like a waste to even try airing scripted programming against that – especially if they’re sticking with 22 episodes a year for Once and Revenge.

  • wade

    suburgatory gets lower ratings than abcs Friday episodes of last man standings. somehow ranked above last man standing however on the renew cancel index.

  • HV

    @Ultima
    So then do you think my second suggestion is a likely posssibility?

  • ryan

    @HV

    No, OUAT spinoff will air in OUAT’s time slot of Sunday at 8 PM. OUAT will air 11 episodes in the Fall and 11 episodes in the Spring. The spinoff will air 8-13 episodes at 8 PM while OUAT is on hiatus.

    What is unclear is what happens to the rest of the night during those 8-13 weeks. Does ABC use cheap reality filler like Wife Swap or Splash for both hours? A cycle of the Bachelor or Bachelorette for two hours? Repeats? Movies?

  • Ryann

    First time doing a schedule for ABC, hard to do, so feel free to put your opinions down =)

  • HV

    @Ryann
    I highly doubt that DWTS will move back a day. ABC will keep their 2 hour Wednesday comedy block. It’s the best way to launch new comedies and it is a huge success. There is a lot of change, only four shows (Middle, Grey’s, Scandal, LMS) are in the same timeslot as 2013-14.

  • Ultima

    @HV
    So then do you think my second suggestion is a likely posssibility?

    Possible, not likely.

  • Ultima

    @Ryann

    Unless they change judges, DWTS can’t air on Sundays due to the conflict with the UK edition.

    Also, there’s no chance that ABC will break up its Wednesday comedy block. Putting Modern Family at 8:30pm makes no sense.

    And where is 20/20? It should be in the Friday 10pm timeslot, just like the past 25 seasons.

  • HV

    @Ultima
    Thank you for your advice. I don’t know how in the world ABC plans on putting a OUAT spin-off into their schedule. I think I will shorten the spin-off’s season to 6 episodes. It will be like a test to see if it is successful.

  • HV

    Turns out to air 28 weeks of new episodes throughout the year (22+6) OUAT will only get to have four weeks in January/February of no new episode (and for this to happen OUAT will have to air 13 episodes in September-December). And the spin-off’s third episode will air on Easter Sunday. Oh, how these Sundays aggrivate me!

  • omabin

    @Ultima,

    The judges thing is only an issue during fall. There is no spring edition of the show in the UK as far as I was able to understand. So I would air the bachelor on sundays during fall, reality filler there during awards season and the olympics, and dwts in the spring. What would you think?

  • Ultima

    @omabin
    So I would air the bachelor on sundays during fall

    ABC is doing fine with their scripted programming; there’s basically no chance they would cut back on it to run DWTS and The Bachelor at the same time.

    I expect ABC will stick with their serialized dramas on Sundays, despite the scheduling headaches it presents.

    The funny thing is that back in the days when all of the networks were running movies on Sunday (which are easy to schdule around big events), most of the award shows were during the week, so they didn’t need to! :)

  • omabin

    @Ultima,

    You misunderstood me. My plan was to air The Bachelor on Sundays during fall and DWTS on Sundays during spring. No bachelor during spring and no dwts during fall – just one edition for each show. I also think there is a very little chance that they will wisen up and stop airing serialized dramas on Sundays but one can only hope…

    @jacobyates I never had any doubts, clearly you did/do since you had to ask. (and tried asking bill of all people lol) But yeah, I know the facts thanks, maybe one day you will too :)

    p.s. Why would I ask the people who predicted body of proof cancelled last season, when I was the one correct in predicting its renewal? That question was rhetorical btw…

  • Elijah
