Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012-  April 28, 2013):

There's no suspense left in the remaining CBS drama renewal or cancellation decisions, so all that's left for the cancellation bear in these weekly posts is getting some headlines in place that will get some search engine love once frantic fans start searching for their previously canceled shows. Golden Boy is certain to be canceled.

The good news is that final up or down (no toss ups!) guesses arrive next Tuesday, May 7! No more boring rehashing of the CBS obvious, the end is near!

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.
*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

** The Renew/Cancel Index does not attempt to predict shows ending because the cast or production company chooses to end them. These shows have the ratings for renewal, but rumored cast/production company moves may end the shows.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CBS Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I really hope Hawaii Five-0 will bounce back, i want it to have more then 4 seasons lol. I hope they dont put it on Fridays or Sundays.

  • The End

Sundays would be better for Hawaii Five-0.

  • Gregg

The Amazing Race/Hawaii Five-O/The Mentalist would be a pretty good schedule on Sundays next Fall. If only they could control the sports overruns better!

new show/The Good Wife/Blue Bloods seems like a probable schedule for Fridays.

CBS definitely needs some new hit dramas this coming season, though. They seem to be in the same spot NBC was in about 10-12 years ago, when NBC’s strong comedies were starting to age, and their new comedies just didn’t appeal to the viewers as much any more.

  • ateofi

People have enough of cop shows. No wonder Golden boy is a fail, also bad lead actor does not help.

  • David

The contracts with most of the Rules of Engagement’s cast have expired and they are moving on to other shows. CBS ordered 12 comedy pilots this year, and unless they expand their comedy hours, they only have room for one on the fall schedule (most likely Chuck Lorre’s new show). If they do add an hour of comedy, I think it would probably be a single-camera block. I don’t see where ROE would fit in, even for mid-season.

  • ryan

CBS will be much more interesting next year:

The Good Wife will likely end and Blue Bloods is probably low-rated enough even for Fridays to get canned.

Hawaii Five-0’s syndication deal is big enough that it will probably get 6 seasons.

The Mentalist will be interesting since CBS doesn’t own it. I would be curious to see how it does on Friday or how it might do with a better lead-in from something like Hawaii Five-0.

Elementary will get 4 seasons for syndication and probably only more than that if it eventually moves to Friday and holds up really well there.

CSI will get 15 seasons. I think the show will end with Ted Danson, so if he wants out after his new two-year contract expires, that will be it.

  • Hardline_Pro

Seems like CBS can only pull of 1 new drama success each year. Last year it was Person of Interest, this year it is Elementary.

Fanboy Fever Dream: Gary Sinise bursts into the CBS boardroom and squints at all of them real hard and they renew CSI:NY out of fear for their lives.

Criminal Minds will get renewed for certain so I’m not worried there. Everything else I like on CBS has been renewed. I’m just looking forward to the CBS upfronts. I hope NCIS Red is a hit, I really like that Paris chick.

  • Rosalyn

Why do they keep on shows like Two Broke Girls and take off CSI New York and Golden Boy. Channel 3 is getting real boring

  • Nick

YOU ARE ALL WRONG. CBS should cancel CSI:NY, Golden Boy, Vegas, The Good Wife & HIMYM.
Here’s how CBS Fall Schedule should be:

    8p Mike & Molly (25 episodes).
8:30 MOM (13 episodes) depending on ratings.
    9p 2 Broke Girls (25 episodes).
9:30 CRAZY ONES (13 episodes) depending on ratings.
10p BEVERLY HILLS COP (13 episodes) depending on ratings.

    8p NCIS (25 episodes).
    9p INTELLIGENCE (22 episodes)depending on ratings.
    10p Criminal Minds (24 episodes).

8p NCIS: Los Angeles (25 episodes).
    9p ADVOCATES (22 episodes)depending on ratings.
    10p Elementary (25 episodes).

8p Big Bang Theory (25 episodes).
    8:30 Two & 1/2 Men (22 episodes).
9p Person Of Interest (25 episodes).
    10p NCIS:RED (22 episodes)depending on ratings.

    8p Undercover Boss (13 episodes)/ Amazing Race (13 episodes).
    9p CSI (22 episodes).
    10p Blue Bloods (25 episodes).

    8p- 10p Crimetime Reruns.
    10p 48 hours mystery.

    7p 60min.
    8p Survivor
    9p Hawaii 5-0 (22 episodes).
    10p The Mentalist (22 episodes).

The new dramas should be on at 9pm if at all possible to give them a good chance of becoming a big hit because if you look back for the last 2 or 3 years 10pm dramas don’t do very well in ratings. And as for the dramas from this season that was not a big hit should be moved to Sun & Fri, like CSI & Hawaii 5-0. Maybe teaming CSI up with Blue Bloods might help it last for another season or two. And give NCIS:LA a chance to open the evening, put a new show on right after it & Elementary that did the better of the new shows & I believe you got a great night of drama.
This schedule I believe would be a winning primetime schedule for CBS.

what’s everyone think of my schedule?

  • Jon

I’ve cried about it all year, but it’s a darn shame that Vegas didn’t catch on. The show has great acting, and the storylines have been great. I like how the show builds on itself. I like the fact that although the episodes can stand by themselves, their is also storyline to follow from episode to episode.

  • Ultima

YOU ARE ALL WRONG. CBS should cancel … The Good Wife & HIMYM.

what’s everyone think of my schedule?

    Awful? Stupid? Delusional?

What kind of response are you expecting when you suggest that CBS should cancel shows which they have already renewed?

  • michaelincmh

    Sally, stay classy.

  • Lynne Becker

why would you cancel golden boy, it is so good? I guess cbs doesn’t care about the over 60s crowd

  • todd35

I’m still made at GB for messing up Vegas so I’m glad it is going to be cancelled. I tried to give it a chance but I found myself hating the main character.
