Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 28, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult* canceled 0.35
90210 canceled 0.49
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F)     0.59
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries*  0.73
Hart Of Dixie renewed 0.89
Beauty And The Beast renewed 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.52
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.92

The cancellation bear has been painted into a headlining corner. The renewals last week of Beauty & The Beast and Hart of Dixie (both predicted by the bear) means that The Carrie Diaries had to go back into the headline, since the only other undecided show, Nikita, was in the headline last week!

The good news is that the end to all this rehashing the obvious is near! Our final up or down guesses arrive next Tuesday, May 7.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

But the reports are that the CW doesn’t want to renew Nikita for a full season, so based on those reports and the previously announced summer schedule, I was trying to figure out what they might be considering schedule wise.

And why couldn’t they announce Nikita’s renewal along with Hart’s and Beauty’s even if they haven’t decided on the episode order? Did they even announce the episode order for those other two anyway?

Also, the tvfortherestofus article that I saw said this

“Another Warner Brothers show, Nikita, will very likely be coming back for only a final half season. The show is popular internationally and makes money for its parent studio, but it’s been barely scraping by on Friday nights at The CW for two seasons now. A 13 episode season would put the final episode count a 81, which is enough for syndication.”

Give the Carrie Diaries another chance!

Not sure how old that twitter source is… but they have some major things wrong. The magic number for syndication is 88, not 81. The WB is going to push for 88… and if they lower the cost to make it happen, then it will. The “source” sounds more like someone who read what TVLine figured out (which Craig himself said was false) and is trying to pass it on as knowledge.

The reason why Nikita hasn’t been renewed is due to the math being worked out and Craig being MIA to shoot the Turn pilot to present his season 4 plan.

Renew The Carrie Diaries and cancel Nikita. A 0.2 Seriously ??? I know Friday is hard but a 0.2 is very low even for The CW.

  • jbhat

6 weeks ago I was pretty sure Nikita would be renewed. A steady 0.4, with an occasional 0.5. But over the past month or so, it has been a stead 0.3, now 0.2. As a follower of the show I know this was not the best year. But I still think overall it was an ok season. Now I am convinced that this later than the rest news for the show, will be bad news for us Nikita fans.

Seriously, if Nikita gets renewed i’ll be pissed. 90210 is even pulling better numbers, and The Carrie Diaries too. Even Emily Owens had better numbers than Nikita and it got cancelled. Also, Nikita is sucking at DVR ratings. I hope to see it cancelled.

  • jbhat

You know Alan, as a fan of the show I really don’t want to see it cancelled. Despite it’s recent decline in the ratings. I’m hoping for another season, and a different direction. Even if it is to wrap up the show, I’d like to see another season.

  • TheFrenchGuy

Nikita will be downgraded ? The Show is not “Certain” to be Renewed. It is a real toss-up.
