Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 28, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult* canceled 0.35
90210 canceled 0.49
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F)     0.59
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries*  0.73
Hart Of Dixie renewed 0.89
Beauty And The Beast renewed 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.52
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.92

The cancellation bear has been painted into a headlining corner. The renewals last week of Beauty & The Beast and Hart of Dixie (both predicted by the bear) means that The Carrie Diaries had to go back into the headline, since the only other undecided show, Nikita, was in the headline last week!

The good news is that the end to all this rehashing the obvious is near! Our final up or down guesses arrive next Tuesday, May 7.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

I’m surprised that our own Cancellation Bear hasn’t devoured “The Carrie Diaries” yet.

It may only be a matter of days.

8 PM – The Tomorrow People (new)
9 PM – The Hundred (new)

8 PM – Hart of Dixie
9 PM – America’s Next Top Model / repeats and then Oxygen at midseason

    8 PM – Arrow
    9 PM – Supernatural

8 PM – The Vampire Diaries
9 PM – The Originals (new)

8 PM – Beauty and the Beast
    9 PM – Nikita

Midseason: Oxygen and Reign (or Selection)

They won’t break up Wednesday. An all-new Monday is risky but the Tomorrow People will likely be a self-starter like Arrow. The 8 PM and 9 PM hours could be switched for Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.

^^ completely plausible new series pickups,, but, IMO, moving forward with all the sci-fi projects… Oxygen, The Tomorrow People, The Hundred, and The Selection would be a big mistake. Especially when you are playing with ~ 10 to 12 available hours (including mid-season pickups). And, ironically enough, will turn the new series shows plus Supernatural, BATB, and even maybe Arrow and TVD into a gigantic Hunger Games of survival. It’s just way too much of the same thing.

And if you do select all the new series above… then Supernatural and Arrow will be split up as lead ins to the new sci-fi shows. Swap Supernatural with one of The Tomorrow People or the Hundred with the proposed schedule above and I think you’re closer to the CW’s thinking of the probable pairings.

If B&B gets moved to Friday, the time slot won’t matter. That’s because the CW will have dumped it there because it’s a cheap show that the CBS/WB joint venture can exploit for revenue by putting into its Netflix and Hulu pipelines and for foreign licensing. Since ratings are less of an issue for a Friday show, I also wouldn’t be surprised to see the show get a budget cut.

@Bill that makes since to me that the affiliates would rather be affiliated with a low rated network then be independent because it might be more attractive to advertisers and for branding purpesses too. For example here is Phoenix the affiliate brands itself as CW6. I really think they need to rework mondays next season just like they did for Wednesdays this season.

  • Dillan

I’m going to miss TCD :(

  • Jonay

Are you happy Bill that Beauty and The Beast is renewed, since you proved Robert right?

  • Jared

Just a quick question that anybody can respond to but why is the CW even considered a major network? ABC has ABCFAMILY..NBC has USA..Fox has FX why can’t CBS use the CW as a cable channel? Just curious..the ratings wouldnt seem as minuscule.

  • Dillan

Because it was formerly The WB/UPN, and I think those were major networks? I’m not 100% sure on that. And, I guess The CW’s ratings used to be pretty good, but I definitely think the people that watch the shows The CW airs, find another way to watch it, which is why the ratings are so low.

As for changing The CW to a cable network, it’s not an awful idea, but it would probably make ratings go even lower.

  • rose

    i love the carrie diaries!!!

  • Holly

The CW is still broadcast though because it works through local affiliate stations that are broadcast over the air. It’s considered a “mini-net” rather than a regular broadcast network because it schedules so few hours (daytime and primetime) and has a smaller affiliate reach.

  • Tom

    @ David

Belo Corp. owns two stations in the Phoenix market. The CW affiliate and an independent station. Running two independents in one market probably isn’t an option for them, but it’s certainly a possibility for others.

  • Z

    8 – Tomorrow People
    9 – Supernautral

    8 – Oxygen
    9 – Beauty & Beast

    8 – Arrow
    9 – The Selection

    8 – Vampire Diaries
    9 – Orginals

    8 – Hart of Dixie
    9 – Nikita

  • Dave

Upfronts are so exciting! It’s like f****** Christmas! :D

All of my shows on every network has been renewed!

I just need NIKITA to join them(whether it’s the final or 6 episodes blah blah) and I’ll be set!

  • kara

Deadline said BATB and Oxygen are being paired next season so BATB wont be pushed to Friday

  • Tessa

Whatever the CW does, if it sets fire to its schedule or starts airing reruns of AFV, it will not touch Wednesdays. So you people moving Arrow and Supernatural around in your schedules are kidding yourselves.

  • jess

I think TCD will be renewed not bc I care but bc the CW is dumb and probably don’t want to lose schwartz/fake empire from their line up. People seem to still think he walks on water even tho he hasn’t produced anything worthy of such a distinction.

  • Holly

Deadline said BATB and Oxygen are being paired next season so BATB wont be pushed to Friday

Deadline doesn’t actually know anything. It’s all speculation at this point.

  • Melody

I’m not complaining about the pick-ups of Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast since I do watch them both, but I’m concerned about this as a business decision for the CW. I have other shows on the net that I love much more and I am concerned that there is no hope in ratings growth for these two shows and that they bring down the network as a whole. I guess I was hoping the CW would be smart and take a chance on revamping the network by cutting off all the .6 and below shows. Still, I’ll get to enjoy watching Wade’s smile each week and that smile can brighten any day.
