Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 28, 2013):

The Cancellation Bear has been painted into a headlining corner. The renewals last week of Beauty & The Beast and Hart Of Dixie (both predicted by the bear) means that The Carrie Diaries had to go back into the headline, since the only other undecided show, Nikita, was in the headline last week!

The good news is that the end to all this rehashing the obvious is near! Our final up or down guesses arrive next Tuesday, May 7.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Notes:

  • :oops: - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • :cry: :cry:- more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  • :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen: - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

    Still do not understand the reasoning of people who want to separate SPN of Arrow … is the only full night for CW; leave it there
    As BATB happy to see “renewed” next to her; at least one more season :)

  • Holly

    @Melody,

    There is a limit to how many shows a net like the CW can successfully develop, promote, and launch in one year. Renewing HoD and BatB gives them a manageable number of new shows, which means they don’t have to put a unpromising pilot to series just to fill the schedule and gives the shows that do make it better promotion.

  • Rachel

    @Anonymous

    They’re not gonna put a new show on friday nights.

  • Tony

    CW has to renew “NIKITA” NOW!!!

  • Rachel

    Upfronts are in like 2 weeks right? When do we officially find out what shows got picked up?

  • Dave

    @Rachel

    For The CW? It’s May 16th I believe.

  • Winston

    @Kara deadline said no such thing. Deadline spoke of pickup prospects. ” Just-renewed Beauty And The Beast has a potential new companion in another drama about an unlikely pair of star-crossed lovers, the human-alien romance Oxygen” potential companion if picked up. Potential. Not official.

  • gerry

    well, when i heard that batb and hod (i was expecting the latter) got their renewals, i figured it was kind of the death knell for tcd. but hey, if they want to pick it up for a 1/2 season and air it, say, when batb gets cancelled next year, i’m all for that ;)

  • gerry

    @ chloe – agreed! separating spn and arrow would be especially stupid. why would the cw break up the ONLY night that is working?

  • Rachel

    Well launching 2 new shows the same night on a struggling network isn’t exactly smart either.

  • Bizarro

    @Kara
    Those two shows just have a lot in common, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they pair B&TB and Oxygen together next season. Though, B&TB and Nikita do seem more likely. B&TB is one of those shows that can go with just about any show on the network because of the action, suspense, and romantic elements.

  • Claudia

    @Bizarro, I think if they pair Oxygen and BATB its a good idea for the CW, they both very similar and will bring all the female audience enough to keep the pairing successful ala SPN & Arrow with predominant male audience….

  • Winston

    Rival website dedicated to spoilery stuff just posted an “article” about nikita’s prospects from WB sources. This speculation about this show is becoming tiresome.

  • Winston

    I feel Nikita is still a sure thing despite how many pilots get picked up.

  • Paleonut

    I too am hoping that the CW keeps the SPN/Arrow pairing. The shows have a nice synergy that I’m not sure would be found with any of the new prospects.

  • Brandy

    A rival website says renewal negotions for Nikita between CW & WB have halted while CW checks out thier pilots and that a full season dosent seem to be on the table and WB hopes CBS pilots tests badly.WB may have Nikita as part of package deal with a couple of its pilots the site says.

  • nep

    “Nikita’s future is at risk, Warner Brothers’ negotiations with the CW seems to have paused as the CW evaluates its pilots and decides how many to pick up for next season.

    The CW could pick up as many as 5 pilots to series (in addition to “The Originals” which will not need significant marketing given its relation to “Vampire Diaries”) and its renewal is unlikely to come long before the upfronts as WB may have a ‘package deal’ with the CW for renewing Nikita and series orders for its pilots: ‘The Tomorrow People’, ‘The Selection’ and ‘The Hundred’ all of which are said to have a shot.

    There is a small chance Nikita could be cancelled and a full season order doesn’t seem to be on the table at this point but it could comes close, the episode count will once again depend on how many pilots the CW picks up and could be anywhere from 6 to 18 episode. For now WB executives are hoping CBS pilots ‘Blink’, ‘Company Town’, ‘Oxygen’ and ‘Reign’ do not test well. “

  • nep

    Interesting that WBTV could blackmail The CW to renew Nikita if they want to pick up any WBTV pilots.

    LEAVE CWS WEDNESDAYS ALONE. ARROW AND SPN WORK!!!

    when it stops working then switch it.
