Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 28, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
Cult* canceled 0.35
90210 canceled 0.49
Emily Owens, M.D.* canceled 0.54
Nikita (F)     0.59
Gossip Girl* final season complete 0.61
The Carrie Diaries*  0.73
Hart Of Dixie renewed 0.89
Beauty And The Beast renewed 0.94
Supernatural renewed 1.52
Arrow renewed 1.61
Vampire Diaries renewed 1.92

The cancellation bear has been painted into a headlining corner. The renewals last week of Beauty & The Beast and Hart of Dixie (both predicted by the bear) means that The Carrie Diaries had to go back into the headline, since the only other undecided show, Nikita, was in the headline last week!

The good news is that the end to all this rehashing the obvious is near! Our final up or down guesses arrive next Tuesday, May 7.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the CW Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2012

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

Of course WB and The CW has to negotiate. In the end, an agreement will come because the network is half owners by the studio.

You keep “LYAO” as if its doing yourself or anyone else favors.

Do yourself a favor and grow the bleep up!

  • Brandy

@Dave, funny cause you do the same thing you say I do!You need to grow up.Dont be so offended if somebody says your precious show has bad ratings, it’s just a tv show. All you do is hate on other shows. As long as you like Nikita, whatt does it matter if somebody says its ratings suck. Why does my option of Nikita matter so much to you that you get upset? You don’t know me so what does it matter if I don’t like Nikita or say its ratings suck, which they do.Like you bash on CD & HoD!Getting upset at somebody for saying the truth about a tv show is immature and you need a life if all you do is care about what people about you precious show and hating on other shows. The fact Nikita’s fate is depndant on how many pilots are picked up just proves its not as safe as people say.

  • Dave

What do you mean I do the same thing as you?! I bet half of the posts on this thread is all by you an something related to Nikita.

I understand that it must be difficult for you as they say the most difficult thing for an addict is to admit that he/she has a problem.

But I’ll do it for you; you have a problem with Nikita and I seriously think you not only need to admit that but you also need help.

I hope you get the help soon. Take care now and have a nice day. :D

  • Richard Steven Hack

Tom: “Thirdly, Hack wasn’t wrong. He was just too logical.”

    Got that right.

Brandy is just a disgruntled 90210 fan. Although she lies and denies it, she got caught on that. She just makes up speculative reasons why Nikita won’t be renewed or won’t get a full final season, then runs around trying to find other worthless Web sites to support these notions. There’s no shortage of idiots around so she has no trouble finding some. Some clown thought up a short season and then it got picked up by the rest of the clowns. Zero evidence from anyone that it’s being considered and it has been denied by the producer (although producers are known to either be out of the loop or to lie about things – see Friedman, Josh :-) ).

I expect Nikita to get a full 22 episode season. But I won’t be surprised if they decide to give it a 13 episode season and move it to mid-season. It makes no sense to me, but the CW is not known for sense. Giving it short seasons (unless it gets two such) simply reduces the amount of money the parent studio gets for its syndication, which to me makes no sense given syndication economics. And since WBTV is part owner it makes sense to me that they will get what they want. The whole point of the CW is to produce syndication and streaming revenue as well as ad revenue properties.

What’s ridiculous about the number of pilots issue is that I believed the CW COULD pick up a bunch of pilots this season. The fact that they renewed BATB proves I was wrong. So now we have a bunch of idiots saying that the CW HAS TO pick up so MANY pilots that they HAVE to cancel Nikita or give it a short season. It makes zero sense because it’s contradictory. If you’re going to pick up a bunch of pilots to replace low-rated or canceled shows, then you cancel BATB and TCD. They didn’t cancel BATB, so clearly they’re concerned that some of the pilots suck (which they do.)

After all, the CW isn’t going to debut a NEW show in Nikita’s spot and they have the 9PM slot available, so why does the amount of pilots matter. They have two shows – HoD and BATB – they can move one of which to Friday at 9PM. So why would they have to cancel Nikita to pick up new pilots? If they move BATB or HoD, they have to fill THOSE slots and neither will do better than Nikita on Fridays (especially BATB which would do worse than HoD in my opinion.)

I’ll repeat what I said: Brandy needs to shut up and wait for the upfronts. It’s just, what, two more weeks, May 16 – and they’ll probably do some announcements a day or two early like most networks.

  • Melanie

@RHS I know, right? As soon as they picked up both BATB & HOD AND Deadline thinks there’s even a CHANCE that TCD is still viable, I thought — the Pilots must be coming back really bad! I don’t care how good the streaming is for TCD, its getting .4’s. Its embarrassing (or it should be) to have it on the air at those levels. And for the CW to think that the new shows wouldn’t do better than that? Wow, then there’s little depth to their choices for Fall.
As I said before, I could see the CW doing something with TCD as an online series IF the streaming numbers really are driving its profitability so a renewal on that basis wouldn’t surprise me.

  • reallypeople

It must be said… TVGuide, really? Why don’t just just look at wikipedia for your “credible” sources. Others have called it right… Nikita will be renewed. Even if 10 viewers watch the remaining episodes (yes, it’s an exaggeration) the CW will give Nikita a chance to wrap up the storyline and use it to fill in a schedule that already has a great number of holes to fill. As for 10…13…18…22 episodes… or whatever other number may be floating out there… it’s quite simple math (once again) the CW/WB will order whatever benefits them the most. If it’s to hit that 88 episode total, than all that needs to happen is for the WB to make it worth CW’s while. (By making it a no brainer option against the others… i.e. lowering the cost).

And the previous poster is correct in that the renewal this early of BATB and HoD tend to indicate lack of confidence in the new pilots. If not, they would have remained on the bubble.

  • Brandy

@,RSH youre the onle lying about me being “a disgruntleded 90210 fan”, since ive told you several times im not and if I was, why would I be disgrunteled? Its ratings are terrible so its cancelled thats understandable., it had a deccent run and will get a proper ending. Not that matters, cause im not.Not everyone who dosent like Nikita or says the trith that its ratings suck is a bitter fan of some other CW,sometimes its just that Nikitas ratings suck sipmle as that.Even if I was a upset 90210 fan what good would hating on Nikita for 90210s sake do?Nothing.I just dont like Nikita cause of its ratings.Stop making stuff up about me and prstending you know me ,know all the shows I watch and like when you dont.I guess then next year after Nikita ends I can call you a disgruntled Nikita fan when you bash BATB or Revolution or other shows huh?LoLOr a disdruntled BATB hater!

  • Melanie

New PilotPanic article up at Deadline doesn’t have much change for the ‘buzz’ on CW pilots except apparently “Blink” is out of the running.

8:00 New Show Fall – the Tomorrow People (planned to have 22 w/back 9 possible)
9:00 New Show Fall – Reign (planned 13 episodes)
9:00 Midseason New Show – The Selection (planned 13 episodes)

    8:00 HOD
8:00 Midseason New Show – Oxygen
    9:00 BATB (new timeslot)

    8:00 Arrow
    9:00 SPN

    8:00 TVD
9:00 New Show – The Originals (planned for 22 episodes w/ back 9 possible)

    8:00 Nikita
    9:00 Fall ANTM/ Repeats
    9:00 Midseason – HOD*

    * or HOD will be the ‘schedule spakle’ going where the new show has flopped

With this Schedule, the CW has three new shows to promote: Tomorrow People, Reign and the Originals (easy w/TVD) and one schedule change (BATB to Tuesdays) to advertise in the Fall and two new shows to promote: Oxygen and the Selection and one schedule change (HOD to Fridays or whereever) to advertise at midseason.

  • Tom

Darn it, Brandy!!! I’m a better disgruntled B&B hater than anyone. So, don’t hang that on Hack. I just noticed that B&B’s viewership tanked for the second consecutive week. Cheers, Beastlings! (Hack: Maybe B&B will still hit the 0.4 you predicted). Over 20 episodes, B&B is doing significantly worse than even the Secret Circle. So, now I’m really psyched to see what Pedowitz does with it. He needs 22 episodes to fill a space on the schedule and feed the Netflix deal. On the other hand, the show clearly doesn’t work at 9 PM and its ratings don’t make it a good lead in for a new show. So, I’m guessing B&B will end up being warehoused on Fridays. Of course, it could always win another PCA. That will be a nice consolation for the few viewers still watching it.

  • ryan

There is only one scenario I can imagine where the CW orders only 13 episodes of Nikita. That scenario is holding Nikita until midseason and having it share a time slot with ANTM on Fridays. This would only make sense if the pilots are actually so good that the CW wants as much weekday space as possible while *also* clinging to BATB for streaming/Netflix and Hulu/syndication deals.

8 PM – The Tomorrow People
    9 PM – The 100

8 PM – Hart of Dixie
    9 PM – Oxygen

    8 PM – Arrow
    9 PM – Supernatural

    8 PM – TVD
    9 PM – Originals

    8 PM – BATB
9 PM – ANTM/repeats in Fall, Nikita in Spring

This would have four new dramas in the fall and allow the CW to keep both BATB and Nikita. They would also have at least one and maybe two pilots for midseason. Again, this only makes sense if the CW is REALLY confident in their new pilots, which doesn’t sound like being the case. Otherwise the CW would either cancel BATB or cut Nikita to a short order, but not both. Doing both would suggest they pick up six pilots. I think it is far more likely they pick up five pilots (three for the fall and two for midseason) and keep Nikita for the entire year at 22 episodes.

  • Rachel

Sucks that Company Town was never in the running to begin with. And we all knew Blink was going nowhere.

I feel like Oxygen will go ahead and get the pickup over The Selection and I can’t see them picking up both Reign and The Selection but we’ll just have to see.

  • Chloe

Since this season is ending BATB has even been renewed
All these months I have read post about post from @ HAck and @ Tom and still do not understand the hatred they have for BATB
They hate everything about him and his fans included, why? could answer that?
and this will continue the duration of the next season?
When your days are counted as both predicted and wildest fans that may be on the ground, it affects them? Seriously need an explanation …
Just as I do not understand this mania for separating Arrow SPN ….

  • Melanie

@Rachel Normally I’d agree with you about Reign & Selection being an either/or proposition, but I read speculation (I think on Deadline) that it was possible the two, both shot overseas, would share a timeslot and follow the cable model of shortened seasons that Pedowicz tried with Cult this year.

In fact, Reign is such a departure for the CW that I’m surprised its still so much in the running.

I arbitrarily left the 100, mentioned in the Deadline article as still in the mix, because I can’t see where the 100 would fit in unless it was in place of the Selection – I wouldn’t think they would have two dystopian themed shows on at the same time.

  • Glenn

yes the TCD will be canceled probably HoD and BATB both run pretty decent in other countrys especially BATB is very popular in south america and europe in the usa those shows are scoring a little bit above average for the cw

  • Knowing

@RSH: At it again…Belittling and denigrating…Calling people “clowns” and “idiots”…Telling women to “shut-up”…
Don’t you get it? Nobody cares what you think when you come on like that…Pathetic, misogynistic, little troll.

  • Tom

    @ Chloe

I’ve described why I loathe B&B in almost clinical detail. To sum up, it’s a show with actors who can’t act, unconvincing characters and storylines that don’t work. Other than the LA Complex, this show is perhaps the most conspicuous example of the CW’s cynical policy of churning out sludge to make as much money as possible from its Netflix and overseas licensing agreements while spending as little as possible. That’s not broadcasting; it’s exploitation.

My gripe with Beastlings is that they live in perpetual denial. They’ll grasp at any straw to demonstrate how good the show is at the same time the show’s ratings are plummeting. Face it, guys, the primetime shows on the USA Network have higher demos than B&B. If you’re a sucker for the kind of treacle being troweled out on B&B, suit yourself. But, stop claiming it’s great television.

While I’m on my soapbox, it’s also about time you Beastlings figured out the difference between “viewer engagement” and “viewer ratings”. Viewer engagement is a measure of the way viewers “connect” with their television programs. That’s typically through print media and online social media, including Facebook, fan blogs and interactive media events like the PCA awards. In contrast, viewer ratings measure the characteristics of television audiences. On this site, that’s typically the 18-49 viewer demographic. The two are unrelated. For example, for several years, the CW’s “One Tree Hill” was one of the top programs for viewer engagement and at the bottom in viewer ratings. So, when someone like Claudia claims that B&B is going to attract more viewers because her blog’s readership is up, she’s living in denial. Beastlings – like other fans – tend to interact across multiple social media sites. This means that an increase of five more readers for one blog is not equivalent to five more viewers. Accordingly, all this Beastling ranting about how well the fans are “uniting” online is nonsense. The show’s ratings are still lousy and there’s no reason to believe that will change.

Anyway, Chloe, thanks for the invitation to comment. I hope this clears up a few issues for you. As I’ve said previously, I’ve embraced being called a B&B “hater” because to me it’s a badge of good taste.

  • Rachel

You’re right. The 100 and The Selection would probably cancel each other out as people will choose to watch one or the other. Previous Deadline reports said The Selection would probably fall to the wayside like it did last season so I’m surprised it is still in the running. I guess the CW really wants it to work.

I’d go with The Tomorrow People, Oxygen and the 100. People don’t look to the CW for period dramas like Reign. That would be a dumb decision on their part but the CW is full of dumb decisions.

I agree. It’s disrespectful and unnecessary. It’s downright embarrassing how seriously some people take this site.

  • Melanie

@Rachel OK I’ll substitute the 100 for the Selection in my schedule. ;)
I still think that the two series will time share. This way three new shows are planned to have only 13 episodes for the season — with only the Originals & frontrunner the Tomorrow People likely to go for 22.

  • Chloe

Thanks @ Tom, I appreciate your taking the time to answer my question and I assure you I understand many of the things you have put there, and I know there besties delusional and as you claim live in denial
But not all are like that, the numbers do not lie, can be very popular in the networks and their audience does not rise, and that’s a fact, may drop more or stay there that we do not know, but the ones we like the show so as is enjoyed and are happy to have at least another season
I do not understand is why they have to respond to every comment made about the series in each post, it does not seem necessary, say a little tiring … and I think it’s an unnecessary energy expenditure
You do not become a troll for it (maybe not exactly you, but there are a few), offending people, tag or giving a nickname, that’s what I do not understand, just let it be and when you should die and point …
