Our Renew / Cancel Index predicts the network's decision on renewal or cancellation for scripted broadcast primetime shows by the end of the 2012-13 season in May, 2013. (includes results from December 31, 2012- April 28, 2013):

Program Status Renew/ Cancel Index
The Mob Doctor* canceled 0.31
Touch (F) 0.38
Fringe* (F) final season complete 0.50
Ben And Kate* canceled 0.60
The Cleveland Show no more eps to be produced 0.75
Raising Hope* renewed 0.80
The Mindy Project renewed 0.83
Bob's Burgers renewed 1.01
American Dad renewed 1.10
Glee renewed 1.12
Bones renewed 1.14
New Girl renewed 1.14
The Simpsons renewed 1.23
The Following renewed 1.38
Family Guy renewed 1.44

The cancellation bear apologizes for once again putting Touch will be canceled into the head line yet again. He had no choice, it's the last week before final guesses and all of Fox's recent renewals left him no choice!

But the obvious ends next week, Tuesday, May 7, when all our final guesses will be in!

Note that for the time being (and perhaps forever) Fox is going with the PR smoke & mirrors that The Cleveland Show isn't canceled, but in fact will simply "have no further episodes produced". I'll play along for a week.

Better to Follow The Bear, Than Be Chased By Him. This season you can follow the Cancellation Bear on Twitter via @TheCancelBear. The Cancellation Bear will retweet all the Renew/Cancel Index post titles and links as well as engage in a little more back and forth banter than we do on our standard @TVbytheNumbers Twitter feed.

*shows no longer on the air have their Renew/Cancel Index "frozen" at the point they left the schedule.

From now through the end of the broadcast season in May, the Renew/Cancel Index values will only be calculated using new episodes airing during 2013. However, until new episodes of a show air in 2013, I will keep the "old"  Fall predictions in the table.

Want to know what the Fox Renew/Cancel Index table looked like at the end of the Fall season? Click here.

  • - certain to be cancelled by May, 2013
  • - more likely to be cancelled than renewed by May, 2013
  • :| :| :| - toss up between renewal or cancellation by May, 2013
  • :) :) :) :) - more likely to be renewed than cancelled by May, 2013
  •     - certain to be renewed by May, 2013

The Renew/Cancel Index is the ratio of a scripted show's new episode adults 18-49 ratings relative to the new episode ratings of the other scripted shows on its own network. It's calculated by dividing a show's new episode Live+Same Day adults 18-49 average rating by the Live+Same Day new episode average of all the new scripted show episodes on the show's own network. The network's average ratings in the calculation are not time weighted (ex. hour long shows are not weighted twice what 30 minute shows are).

(F) -Fridays: Shows airing on Fridays were renewed with significantly lower than average Indexes.

If president Obama call up FOX and ask them to renew The Cleavland Show would they have too?

  • Wright

I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

  • Patrick Ausgewahlt

Fox cancelled Family Guy, twice. It’s ratings are half of what they used to be and it is still the top FOX show. I feel like it could pull a Bob’s Burgers. Be cancelled and then brought back once Napoleon Dynamite (or whatever they are replacing Cleveland with) fails for like 8 episodes to finish off the year. I could see them doing a 12 episode midseason order. There would be time to make episodes for post football season. I guess I’m just in denial that the best Seth MacFarlane show is going away.

While I agree that Glee is a terrible show when it comes to the writing, considering the ratings, there was never any doubt that it was going to be renewed for a 5th season. Like Ultima pointed out, it performs above Fox’s scripted average. And the fact is, TV networks make decisions based on how many eyes are watching their programs, not the quality of them. Really, the only surprise for me was the 2-season renewal, but I suppose with the syndication $ that will be coming in, it made financial sense.

    @Folks predicting next season’s schedules:
I don’t think Glee should be moved to Fridays. I also don’t think any new shows should go there. I’m thinking Raising Hope and The Mindy Project should air that night along with Kitchen Nightmares.

Glee is tired – I don’t know if Fox will put it on fridays with 2 full seasons yet – but I’m sure it will land on fridays eventually – I think its final season for sure!

  • Travis

It’s a good thing what’s on TV doesn’t rely with your personal taste! There’s a remote to change the channel if you want to.

  • Wright

I don’t need to change the channel because I don’t waste my time watching it. Thanks for the advice though. I never would have thought of that.

  • The End

Still think Kiefer Sutherland is the only reason why Touch hasn’t been openly announced as cancelled. They’re probably waiting till the show has finished its run or something.

I bet any time after May 10th they’l kill the show off.

I actually considered your suggestion of moving Raising Hope and Mindy to Fridays. However, I think Fox is keen on keeping a Tuesday night comedy block, paticularly because they have four to five strong comedy pilots in contention. Moving those two shows would mean three new comedies plus New Girl. That seemed to risky to me to consider. The only way Mindy and RH move is if Fox eliminates a Tuesday comedy block.

  • Interested Viewer

As far as Glee moving to Fridays, I only did it for the Spring season. I wasn’t thrilled with the choice, but Fox needs real estate to develop new shows.

  • Sarah

After last night, I definitely think next season will be Bones’ last.

Actually happy to hear this. Kiefer needs to start working on that “24” movie. ;-)

  • catsrule

Touch could possibly be renewed if FOX wants to keep Kiefer Sutherland from other networks.

  • Hardline_Pro

Great, see you guys next year. ;)

  • hiii

glee is amazing!! so shut up.. and fox should move back it on tuesday..on thursday there is too much competition

  • ryan

Glee was probably renewed for two seasons so that they could plan their contracts and story-lines to end with six seasons total. I wouldn’t be at all surprised for it be announced at some point that the sixth season is the last, kind of like what Lost did. If people know Glee will only have 6 seasons, they might put up with it for two more instead of being worried about the show dragging on forever. That, or FOX just hates us! ;)

Which “Touch” are we talking about? The sweet, touchy-feely really gee-whiz show that always had two cute Japanese girls helping the world go around? Or the grim, gory serial killer/monolithic murdering corporation show?
